greta van fleet is like prepare to hear music from 40 years ago performed by the smallest drunkest teenagers youβve ever seen. no we cannot get them to put their shoes on yes we have tried
Josh Kiszka = Oliver Putnam from only murders in the building
The gears in my English Lit brain are turning very very slowly, but I have a few thoughts about the Meeting the Master MV:Β
The red gloves stand out to me like they have blood on their hands after fighting in the Battle at Gardens Gate: theyβre back from the war and are seeking answers/looking to faith after the atrocities they witnessed.
The Master seems to be the answer - she brings them back to the natural world and itβs almost like they have a cleanse (the water imagery, flowers, them being in the woods, wearing white) to purge their past.
But then things start to turn south as the music picks up: they put every ounce of their being into what the Master is giving them and let it fully consume them to the point where they lose their agency. Basically they start to girlboss too close to the sun with the Master (I lowkey think Danny aka the archer straight up shoots the Master around 3:15). The red tinted images, fire, bow and arrow, and the sword bring violence to their seemingly safe space, so itβs like they canβt truly escape from the horrors of war.Β
The shots of the Master in the water with the sword and flowers feel like a nod to Sir John Everett Millaisβ painting, Ophelia, which is frequently interpreted as a message of both growth and decay: the refuge she brought them is something that comes and goes.
In the last shots of Josh by the fire, the silver bands across his eyes (representing a rebirth or new beginning?) have been traded for tears of red, as if his eyes have been bleeding. In spite of this, he still expresses his love and devotion for the Master, seemingly delusional to the destruction that has happened.
Thatβs where Iβm at right now, I have no clue whatβs up with the horse other than that it visually looks nice lol
EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS!!!!
I wonder why josh was the only one in the conclusion of the videoβ¦why is he the only one that was taken by the madness ? Where are the others what happened to them? Does it have something to do with josh wearing a red cape and only one red glove in comparison to the others ?
Theyβre opening song on this new album is titled βFate of the Faithfulβ I mean cmonnnnnnnnnn
Wow I canβt be liege I didnβt think about Josh being alone in the end. I wonder if theyβre leaning into Josh being the frontman (leader, master?). Maybe making a point about power hungry leaders, power and corruption? That could be me going too deep though lol
I saw a lot of (what I thought to be) imagery that references sacrifice, I wonder if the others were sacrificed/sacrificed themselves?
These additions!!!!! I hadnβt thought about Josh being the only one in the end, that is a really interesting point - the fire definitely seems like it could be linked to a sacrifice. Josh definitely felt like he was in the forefront of the narrative, him taking over the power and corruption in the end is such a good take holy shit
Ok I had another thought! I wonder if worship of false idols could play into this? Maybe in the battle at gardens gate theyβre fighting on behalf of a master that theyβve had this undying devotion to thatβs led them into the garden, but once theyβve entered the garden theyβve learned of the corruption inside. So the master they thought was so pure actually took advantage of their good faith to take over the garden. Worshipping and following that false idol led to their demise as they are doomed to repeat the cycle in the garden, trying to find a new master with better intentions

I love this!
Another thing that jumped out to me was the master burning that wreath, to me it seemed like a reference to Jesusβ crown of thorns. I interpreted it as them having traded one master in for another. Maybe that first master is their own agency, maybe a worldly connection, maybe the previous βmasterβ that they fought against in the battle at gardens gate?
There also seemed to be a lot of imagery that I associated with sacrificing, especially congregating at a fire.
Iβm also still playing with my thoughts about the horse, my initial one being that this horse is mostly seen alone so maybe itβs pointing to a solitary freedom away from a master that is not oneself? I also think it is the only white imagery that doesnβt end the music video tainted by red, maybe it represents a way out of the devotion/entrapment from something.
so nice of them to feature vamp danny in the music video
What a day to meet the master
Iβve been waiting for so long
Final day to meet the master
Itβs my time to go home
