Review//Spies in Disguise
#TaysTake 8.5 for Spies in Disguise
Snuck one more movie in before the end of the year and so happy it was this one! My sister and I have been wanting to see this movie for months and it was the best way to end our movie watching adventure in 2019.
Simple story: Lance is an ultra cool, mega spy; super popular, amazing at his job, star of the office. Walter is a lowly nerd; building gadgets for the spies but with a twist—all his gadgets are nonviolent! You can guess what happens from here: Lance ends up needing Walter, they see eye to eye, and save the day, Walter’s way. In the middle, Lance becomes a pigeon, then turns human again, then a pigeon again, and finally back to human once more.
Call it corny, but nothing was more refreshing than watching this animated movie about nonviolence, finding a way to do good in the face of evil, being yourself, and doing the right thing. On top of it all, it was hysterical & Will Smith is a living legend we must support at all costs. In a theater filled with parents and their laughing kids, while my sister and I, definitely the oldest people in the room not accompanying a small child, I was happy to end 2019 watching Spies in Disguise. Check it out if you get a chance. Definitely worth the watch!

#TaysTake 7.9 for Uncut Gems
Scrolling through Twitter, I stumble upon a tweet from my best friend, Adriana. It reads: “ Uncut Gems is two hours of holding your breath”. I’ll add to that & hoping for the best possible outcome. That is the perfect description for this movie & how I knew I wanted to start this review. Adam Sandler definitely deserves an award for his performance. It’s obvious he was fully committed to the role. Dedication to costume, accent, lingo, and style really allow you to dive fully into the movie, tossing you into the life of a sleazy diamond dealer/jeweler in NYC.
While I didn’t think the movie was worthy of the 92 it has in RT, it was enjoyable and well worth the watch. The Safdie brothers do an excellent job of plunging their audience into each scene. The story has a fairly slow pace but goes 0 to 100 in the last 20 minutes or so. With a shocking ending (and one that leaves you to make your own assumptions), you’re really rooting for Howard, and hope the hero comes out on top. Despite many dickhead decisions and fuck ups, you want Howie to succeed, turn it all around, and be victorious.
Overall, this is a must see before the end of 2019.
