The second Summer walked into her parents’ house, she knew she’d made a mistake. Her mother was already looking at her too closely.
Christine Graham had always had an almost supernatural ability to know when something was wrong with her children. Summer used to think it was because she was a mom. Now she was pretty sure it was because her mother was terrifying.
“You look tired.” Christine said, immediately
She kissed Summer's cheek in the entryway.
“Thanks.” Summer said, weakly
“You’re pale.” Christine said
“Also thanks.” Summer said
“And thinner.” Christine said
Drew, the traitor that he was, immediately disappeared into the kitchen before Summer could glare at him.
Dinner was awkward from the start. Dean was talking about work. Drew was talking about football. Christine kept looking at Summer every few minutes like she was trying to solve a puzzle. Summer barely touched her food. Mostly because the smell of the chicken was making her nauseous.
“You okay, honey?” Christine asked
Summer pushed her plate away after only a few bites.
“You haven’t been feeling well for weeks.” Drew said, entirely too casually
Summer nearly kicked him under the table.
“What?” Drew said, innocently
Christine’s eyes narrowed.
“Have you been sick?” Christine asked
“I’ve just been stressed.” Summer said
“You threw up in our downstairs bathroom on Thanksgiving.” Christine said
Summer froze. Dean looked up from his plate.
“No.” Summer said, quickly
Christine stared at her daughter. Then her eyes widened.
“Oh my God.” Christine realized
Summer’s stomach dropped.
“Oh my God.” Christine said, again
Christine was still staring at Summer.
“You’re pregnant.” Christine said
The entire table went silent. Summer closed her eyes.
“Jesus Christ.” Drew muttered
Dean looked between them. Then at Summer. Then at the expression on Christine’s face.
“You’re pregnant?” Dean asked
There was no point lying anymore. Slowly, miserably, Summer nodded. Christine’s hand flew to her mouth. Dean just stared at her.
“You’re twenty-two years old.” Dean said
Summer blinked. Because that was not the reaction she’d expected.
“You’re twenty-two.” Dean said
“You have a job. You have your whole life ahead of you.” Dean said
“I know.” Summer said, again
“And now you’re pregnant?” Dean asked
“Dean.” Christine said, quietly
“No! No, because what the hell were you thinking?” Dean asked
“I wasn’t—” Summer started
“Clearly!” Dean exclaimed
“Who is the father?” Dean asked
Summer looked down at the table. Silence. Dean’s face darkened.
“I don’t know.” Summer whispered
The room went completely still.
“You don’t know.” Dean repeated
Summer could feel tears starting to burn behind her eyes.
“It's complicated.” Summer said
“How complicated can it possibly be?” Dean asked
“Dean.” Christine said, sharply
“No, Christine! She’s pregnant and she doesn’t even know who the father is?” Dean said
Drew shoved his chair back.
“Don’t tell me enough.” Dean said
“She already knows she screwed up!” Drew exclaimed
“Drew.” Summer said, weakly
“No, seriously.” Drew said
He was glaring at their father now.
“You think she doesn’t know this is bad? You think she hasn’t been freaking out for weeks?” Drew asked
Dean stood up from the table.
“I cannot believe this.” Dean said
“Dean.” Christine said again, quieter this time
But Dean was too angry now.
“Out of wedlock. Twenty-two years old. And you don’t even know who the father is?” Dean said
Summer started crying. She hated herself for it immediately. She hated that she was crying. She hated that she felt sixteen instead of twenty-two. She hated that this entire thing had somehow become real enough to tell her parents.
“I’m sorry.” Summer whispered
Christine immediately moved to her side.
“Oh, honey.” Christine said
“I’m sorry,” Summer said, again
She was crying harder now.
“I know it’s awful and I know you’re disappointed and—” Summer stared
“Oh, sweetheart, no.” Christine said
She wrapped her arms around her daughter. Summer buried her face in her mother’s shoulder. Dean looked stricken for exactly one second before his expression hardened again.
“Who are they?” Dean asked
“The potential fathers. If you don’t know which one, then there’s more than one.” Dean said
Summer didn’t answer. Dean stared at her. Then he looked genuinely horrified.
“What? He was gonna figure it out!” Drew said
Dean sat back down heavily in his chair.
Summer hid her face in her hands.
“This is literally my worst nightmare.” Summer said
“Do they know?” Christine asked
“They want to be involved.” Summer said
That made Dean laugh once. Not because anything was funny. Because he was angry.
“They want to be involved. What does that even mean?” Dean asked
“It means they want to help.” Summer said, quietly
“They’re eighteen.” Drew mumbled
Summer looked up sharply.
“How do you know that?” Christine asked
Drew suddenly became very interested in the table and Christine slowly turned to look at him.
“Drew Alexander Graham.” Christine said
“You know who the fathers are?” Christine asked
“You knew and you didn’t tell us?” Christine asked
“She made me promise!” Drew exclaimed
“You have known this entire time?” Christine asked
“She was scared!” Drew exclaimed
Christine looked between both of her children. Then she sat down too, suddenly looking exhausted. For a long moment, nobody said anything. Finally, Christine reached across the table and took Summer’s hand.
“I am upset.” Christine said, honestly
“But I am not upset at you.” Christine said
That made Summer cry again and Christine squeezed her hand.
“You are my daughter. I’m worried about you. That’s all.” Christine said
Dean was still angry. Summer could tell. But after a long moment, he sat back in his chair and looked at her.
“You should have told us sooner.” Dean said, quietly
“You are not doing this alone.” Dean said
“I’m still angry. Very angry.” Dean said
“Shocking.” Drew said, sarcastically
“But you’re my daughter,” Dean said
He looked at Summer again.
“And that baby is my grandchild.” Dean said
Summer started crying for what felt like the thousandth time that week.
“Jesus Christ.” Drew muttered
He shoved the bread basket toward Summer.
“Can someone in this family stop crying for like five minutes?” Drew asked
Summer was standing at the kitchen sink rinsing off her face when she heard the back door creak open. For a second, she thought it was Drew. Then she looked up and saw her dad standing in the doorway to the kitchen. Dean looked awkward. Which was honestly worse than if he still looked angry. He leaned against the counter for a second, hands shoved in the pockets of his jeans.
“You always cry in my bathroom.” Dean said, finally
Summer let out a weak laugh.
“When you were little and you got upset, you’d hide in our bathroom because you thought nobody would find you there.” Dean said
Summer looked back down at the towel in her hands.
“I’m twenty-two.” Summer said
“You’re still my little girl.” Dean said
That almost made her cry again. Dean crossed the kitchen slowly and stopped beside her. For a minute, neither of them said anything. Then he sighed.
“You don’t have to apologize.” Summer said
He rubbed a hand over his face.
“I am angry. I’m angry because this isn’t how I wanted things to go for you.” Dean said
“You were supposed to have more time.” Dean said
Summer had always been his careful one. The responsible one. The one who had a plan. She was supposed to get married someday. Have a baby someday. When she was older. When she was ready. Not now, not like this.
“I know.” Summer whispered
Dean looked at her for a long moment. Then he reached out and tucked a piece of hair behind her ear the same way he used to when she was little.
“You know what I remember?” Dean asked, quietly
“The day you were born.” Dean said
“You came out screaming.” Dean said
He smiled a little despite himself.
“The loudest baby in the entire hospital.” Dean said
“Shocking.” Summer said, sarcastically
“You had so much hair. And the nurse put you in my arms and I remember thinking—” Dean started
He stopped for a second, his voice rougher when he started again.
“I remember thinking I had never loved anything that much in my life.” Dean said
Summer’s eyes filled immediately.
“And then you got bigger. You started following me around the house everywhere. You used to sit on the kitchen counter while I made pancakes every Sunday.” Dean said
Summer laughed through her tears.
“You’d let me stir even though I was terrible at it.” Summer said
“You got batter all over the walls.” Dean said
“You never let Drew or Hunter help.” Summer said
“Drew once put an entire eggshell in the bowl and Hunter almost set the house on fire.” Dean said
Summer laughed harder and Dean smiled. Then his expression softened again.
“You’ve always been my girl. Nothing about this changes that.” Dean said, quietly
Summer burst into tears and stepped forward, wrapping her arms around him. Dean hugged her immediately. She hadn’t let him hold her like this in years. Not since she was a teenager. But suddenly she felt about six years old again, standing in the kitchen with her dad after a nightmare.
“I’m scared.” Summer whispered
“I don’t know what I’m doing.” Summer said
“You don’t have to.” Dean said
Summer squeezed her eyes shut.
“Stop apologizing.” Dean said
“You made a mistake. A pretty big one.” Dean said
Summer let out a watery laugh.
“Thanks.” Summer said, sarcastically
“But you are not ruined. Do you hear me?” Dean said, firmly
“You are not ruined. You are still smart and good and my daughter. And you’re going to be okay.” Dean said
Summer nodded, crying too hard to speak. Dean brushed a tear off her cheek with his thumb.
“And if those boys hurt you, I’ll bury them somewhere your mother will never find them.” Dean said
Summer laughed so hard she nearly cried again.
“You don’t even know them.” Summer said
“I know they got my little girl pregnant.” Dean said
Summer rolled her eyes, but she leaned into his side anyway. Dean kissed the top of her head.
