Orange is a series revolving around a simple question - if you received messages from a future you, saying how to stop one of your largest regrets, what would you do? Do you act, or do you even believe the messages at all?

It’s an interesting question to ponder, each of us likely having something we’d want to change, whether it was a missed relationship, opportunity, or even just to tell ourselves to relax a little more. Time is finite - and it’s sure easy to get lost in thought when everything seems large in respect to the life you live. But I digress, I was talking about Orange here, wasn’t I?

The series is yet another high school one, certainly an area that’s well over-represented in anime, but similar to ReLIFE it develops the setting well. Through the show you get a teenage angst that feels authentic, the conflict of trying to understand others, of understanding your own feelings, of making the right choices like they’re your last. Orange really underlines that last point, each letter giving rather precise guidance on what to do, of what their future self regretted by not doing it, and the character in-time conflicted on how to do what the letter says while still being a teenager unsure of themselves.

Naho Takamiya is our protagonist through this journey, the first letter she received telling her to keep an eye on the new transfer student Kakeru Naruse. While she wouldn’t follow the guidance of the first, as the letters rung more and more true she couldn’t help but take them as gospel. Whether she’s successful or not falls back on that teenage uncertainty, of whether she’s capable of doing what the letter says, of getting outside of her own head or wallows in pity. It’s a compelling, emotional experience to follow to say the least.
