Tate & Lindsay // The Aftermath
“I didn’t try to kill you last night, although please believe me when I say I’m genuinely surprised that no one has tried to murder you sooner, bitch.” Lindsay stomped down on his foot, hard. Tate raised his hands as if he were gesturing for some form of mercy, and Lindsay rolled her eyes at the mention of an alibi. “Fine, I’ll give you 30 seconds to tell me this alibi of yours, then I’m pouring acid on that pretty little face of yours.”
As Tate spoke, she slowly released her grip on him. She was right, Tate had indeed been a witness to her death, but he hadn’t been the perpetrator. Stepping back, she was struck with the terrifying realization - someone had tried to murder her, only now she didn’t have a clue who it was. Letting out a shaky breath, she looked up at Tate, who seemed to be coming to a similar realization.
"Yeah, that zombie you saw. The person you saw fall off of a building, was me.” Her brows furrowed as she spoke. “Well, technically I didn’t exactly fall. I was pushed. At least I think I was pushed. I don’t even fucking remember what the hell happened.” Lindsay sighed, pressing her fingers against her temple. “And I just lost the only goddamn lead I had.”
Lindsay leant back against the bench behind her; it looked like it was going to be another sleepless night gripping a kitchen knife in fear. Only this time, she didn’t know who she was protecting herself from. She looked at Tate, her voice much quieter this time. “Was there anyone you saw in the building, who looked, I don’t know - capable of murder?” It was a far-fetched question, but to say she was desperate would be an understatement.
What Tate was witnessing felt quite shocking for me. In a single moment, Lindsay had gone from axe murderer to almost a sympathetic axe murderer. Tate wearily took a seat on the bench next to Lindsay, despite feeling she wouldn't want him anywhere near her. Part of him was tempted to touch her shoulder or something, maybe to console her, but he didn't. Tate wasn't the type of person to pat someone's shoulder and say 'there, there' after they'd been almost killed. Yet part of him still wanted to help Lindsay, in his own twisted way.
"A bunch of sleep derived students who smelt worse than me, I'm sure they could be capable of anything in that state." It was a joke but Tate promptly realised that this wasn't the most appropriate time to joke about someone trying to kill Lindsay. "I wasn't really paying attention, I wish I had been. We could go over and try see the security cameras for the front of the library, see all the people who went in and out. It is not much but it is a start." Without even realising, Tate had said we, like they were now a crime solving duo seeking justice. He offered her a weak smile, knowing that not a lot would cheer her up.
"If we had a look at some footage, we could do some brainstorming and go from there. I'm sensing a little interrogation, heavy physical threats. It'll be a blast." Tate's attitude wasn't exactly rubbing off on Lindsay; she looked absolutely terrified. He lifted his hand up and almost hovered it hers but quickly withdrew it and placed it on his leg. "Do you want me to buy you a coffee? I'm not sure if zombie demons drink coffee, but I was feeling a coffee, and it would be rude not to ask." Another weak effort to take her mind off something that would be sure to haunt Lindsay into the early hours of the morning.
Tate walked over and looked into a nearby mirror laying on another bench, checking out the reflection of his neck in it. "I think you should try tell me why someone would want to kill you," he said as he noticed a small bruise on his neck, "aside from being this huge psychotic bitch, there has to be some other reason." The bruise should've faded a lot quicker, if it'd ever had a chance to appear at all. "Are you the best at one of your classes and one of your subordinates is trying to kill their way to the top, hmm?"
Tate & Lindsay // The Aftermath
Rage.
It wasn’t an emotion Lindsay often felt, it was usually only saved for moments such as when Owen was using her bathroom instead of his own, or when someone made a comment about one of her various sexual conquests. But this, this was something entirely different. Her eyes darkened as she spotted him, her heartbeat racing as her blood began to boil. Lindsay never knew one person could cause so much hatred within her, but the moment she saw Tate Marshall, she was murderous. Without a second thought, she stood up off of the bench she had been sitting from.
"You okay, Lindsay?" She had been sitting with a rather large group of friends, but of course Isabelle Sullivan was the first one to notice how weird she was acting. Lindsay counted her lucky stars that Kaya was currently in a lecture, otherwise her best friend would be all but forcing the answer out of her. "Yeah, I’m fine, Iz. Just have some business I need to take care of."
Storming towards Tate, she felt herself becoming more filled with anger by the second. Lindsay wasn’t used to this feeling - and she wasn’t entirely sure she liked it - but when someone tries to murder you, she assumed a thirst for vengeance would be pretty common. But first, she needed answers.
When she reached him, she yanked at the collar of his shirt. “You’re coming with me, asshole”, she said through gritted teeth. Pulling him along behind her, she headed into the hallway, where students were far too involved in their own pathetic conversations to notice the two of them. Lindsay headed towards a Chemistry lab that she knew was unlocked regularly - she may or may not have slept with the tutor on occasion - and pulled him inside.
Briefly letting him go, Lindsay wordlessly shut the door behind her, turning the lock so they wouldn’t be interrupted. Almost instantly, she was pulling at his collar again, pushing him violently against the wall behind him. With her hands firmly pinning him against the wall, she began her interrogation.
"Listen fuckface. I don’t know who you are, I don’t know what your deal is, I don’t even know when the last time you showered was, but I swear to god if you don’t tell me why you tried to murder me last night, I will break one of these flasks, and stab you with the glass shards. Got it?"
"What the," Tate began to say as soon as she shut the door, momentarily given a second to breath once released from Lindsay's grip. He was cut off soon enough as she abruptly pushed him into the wall. "Fuck?" There was blatant anger in his tone. It wasn't every day one of his co-eds, especially one who hadn't even so much as nodded in his direction before, assaulted him.
"Get the fuck off me," he struggled against he grip, "I didn't try to kill you last night, although please believe me when I say I'm genuinely surprised that no one has tried to murder you sooner, bitch." He realized, perhaps a little too late, that his words would only fuel her rage more.
"Look, just hold on," Tate brought his hands up, trying to motion for peace and get her to calm down, "I did not try to kill you last night, I can swear to that, not that I think your mind can be changed easily, but I have an alibi." He tried to take a deep breath, which wasn't the easiest task given how Lindsay had been handling him.
"I was outside the library, minding my own business when BOOM I hear something smack on the ground around the corner. Like, holy shit, right? Talk about ways to ruin a buzz. I go over, check it out. Random person has fallen, looks super fucking dead, just laying there. So, like any normal person, I go over to give them a hand or something, you know, until they start getting up. Which is just some straight up zombie shit, so I bolted."
He sounded insane, Tate had never said anything so absurd in his life but he'd also never had someone shake him down and accuse him of attempting to murder them.
"As far as I can recall, I didn't have the time to squeeze in a quick murder after that."
It was at that moment, and only then, when Tate started to piece it together. Someone had tried to kill Lindsay last night. The last person Tate had recalled seeing was Lindsay as she brushed past him in the library. Same time, same place. It took saying it all out loud for him to compare the two incidents and decipher that there was just the one. Tate had witnessed someone try to murder Lindsay.
Sass is inevitable but you should know by now that I don’t take a fail lying down - or against a wall, so you’re definitely aware that I won’t be buying you even a bottle of beer; unless you were replaced by a cyborg and honestly believe that line will work.
Fine, I'll bring the beer. It was worth a short, though. You can just sit there looking almost pretty and watch me drink it. Only then can we brainstorm how to get you out of this little mess.

Tate & Lindsay // The Aftermath
After doing hours of study for an upcoming exam, Tate Marshall had decided it was time to take a smoke break. Researching on a high had never failed him in the past, in fact it had at times improved his marks due to being so insightful. Slinging his bag over his shoulder, Tate shoved a couple notepads into it and headed down the stairs. He was only half looking at where he was going; his concentration on rolling his joint. It was late, no one was around and even if someone said something Tate wouldn't care. Plus, he felt like showing off a skill he'd mastered in high school, something he called rolling while walking. It was all very impressive.
It was at that point someone bumped into him. Who else could be as aloof as Tate, to not even notice someone walking into them? Of course, Lindsay Bishop. She was the personification of entitlement, so it didn't come as a surprise to Tate that she'd have expected anyone to steer out of her way. He rolled his eyes in annoyance as she didn't even bat her eyes at him.
Outside the library, Tate pressed his back up against the wall. His tongue ran along the joint before he grabbed the lighter from his pocket. Once it was in his mouth and lit, he shut his eyes and took a drag. It was all so quiet and dark, just how Tate liked it. The silence was haunting in a beautiful kind of way and it made him feel his high that much quicker.
Tate's breath was cut short when a loud thump came out of no where. The sound of bones cracking was so familiar, he couldn't sworn someone had just attacked him. He jumped, dropping his joint and stepping his shoe over it. He hid behind the shadows, slowly creeping over to the nearby alley where the sound had come from. He saw someone laying motionless on the ground, but hidden from the parking lot light in the distance, leaving Tate unable to see who it was. Had they jumped? Had they been pushed?
In the next moment, Tate witnessed them move. They weren't dead. That kind of impact to the ground guaranteed death, Tate had heard the sound the body had made. But here they were, alive. Terrified and almost paralyzed by fear, every bone in Tate's body was telling him to run. But he didn't. For better or worse, he felt as if it was his duty to help them and ensure they were okay. Tate walked down the alley and headed closer toward the body but stayed at a safe distance. He took two steps back when he saw the mystery person stand up. That was when he ran. They were fine, Tate didn't need to involve himself with them - whoever it might have been. He didn't care to stick around and find out, he had enough of his own things going on. All that mattered was that they weren't dead. That was that.
But it didn't end there. Tate couldn't shake what he'd been partial to. Initially he charted it up to him being as high as a kite, but it was too real. He could still feel every inch of that moment. The next day, he wandered through the heart of the campus. He'd already skipped one lecture that day and had sidetracked all his studying. There was no way he'd be able to concentrate in this state of mind, that Tate was sure of.
At a nearby bench, Tate took a seat and scanned his eyes across the college landscape. Dozens of his peers walked by, laughing carelessly at one another with their books clutched to their chest. Even before last night, Tate would've never been a giggler or someone who clutched books. Trouble always seemed to follow him, as did death. He really should've been used to this. However, there was one person who didn't seem cheerful, not that she ever really did. Lindsay Bishop, a face he'd now seen two days in a row yet could've gone the rest of his life without laying his eyes on. Tate would've shrugged it off, until he noticed that she was walking straight over to him.
And what’s your expert opinion on dodging that situation?
If only the teaching staff weren't all bat shit ugly, you wouldn't need to dodge. Take the fail, give him sass and buy me a six pack of beer. That is the only way to dodge it.
I’m getting the distinct impression that Mr Tanner wants me to fail his class. The man clearly doesn’t know me at all. I live to disappoint old men.
He probably just wants to flunk you and then fuck you. Classic creepy professor move, happens to me all the night.
I can’t blame you there. Everything’s a little better with a drink.
A drink or five. I think it is rare for me to not hand in an essay I wrote with a bottle of scotch by my side. Perks of being a bartender.
Well, that’s nothing new.
I guess I would've learned that sooner, had I been sober any time I've engaged with someone over the last seven years.

People are really fucking weird.
if you wanna get out alive, run for your life.
I think you can handle it.
Maybe I can. Or maybe you'll have to make it up to me. An hour of kindness wouldn't kill you, right?
Hm, you are better than a kick in the face. That’s for sure.
Ouch. My already dwindling ego is further melting to the ground.
And to think, I’ve spent years wondering why I’ve always liked you more with the night before hanging over your head and you just handed me the answer. Generous.
Oh, don't kid yourself. You like me just as much the night prior, than any other time of day. We'll just add it to the list of the many, many, many things you like about me. Because clearly I'm very likeable.

Always so selfless, Marshall.
Ah well, for you I think I might be able to share a drink or two. Being this giving to others just comes so naturally to me. Especially when I'm, you know, hungover as shit.
If anyone wants to pour me a line of shots and then not hang around to watch me skull them and make idle chitchat, you'd be doing me a huge favour.
