during his adolescence, noctis acquired many skills that he rarely finds use for in his adult life ( and few that he actually requires for his adult life ). the most prominent of them all is fishing, of course, and he takes every opportunity he can get to indulge in it. others that are so much less prominent that the prince himself even forgets he has them are piano and ballroom dancing, neither of which were learned by choice.Β
as a child, noctis was told he had to participate in a fair amount of extracurriculars in addition to his tasks that were assigned to prepare him for his future duties as lucian king. the first being learning an instrument of his choosing (Β βchoosingβ meaning one of the preexisting options presented to him ). initially, the princeβs choice was violin, as it was the closest to the instrument he trulyΒ wished to learn: the guitar. however, after several embarrassing failed lessons, the prince decided that the choice wasnβt worth the humiliation, no matter how private the lesson, and decided to switch to piano instead, though without much confidence.Β
to his own surprise, he caught on fairly quickly, with very few mistakes in between. soon enough, piano lessons became less and less of a burden, despite being far from his favorite activity, and he began playing for his father whenever he mastered a new piece ( if only to spend more time with his father, a craving that he could never seem to satisfy ).
at present, noctis only plays when the mood strikes, which is exceedingly rare, and usually only when he is the only one within hearing rangeΒ β even rarer of an occurrence.
the second skill he was tasked with mastering was ballroom dancing. of course, in theory, noctis knew why it was necessary for him to learn; anyone of noble blood was expected to know. most commonly, it was for the sake of being prepared for social gatherings and galas that may include a dancefloor; however, many also distantly kept in the back of their minds that it would also save them from the embarrassment of fumbling a dance at the time of their respective weddings sure to come in their adulthood.Β
noctis was aware of this, of course, but he did not care. he fought every royal personnel in his way to keep from being forced into learning. he complained. he ducked and ran. he hid away. once, he even came very close to throwing a princely tantrumΒ β but king regis put a swift and harsh stop to that outburst before it could even truly begin; shortly after, the red-faced and thoroughly scolded prince was diligently present at each and every lesson without fuss.
as a teen, and even adult, noctis will claim to have absolutely no knowledge or skill with dancing, simply to avoid doing so if possible. and if it isnβt possible...well, he has the choice of the embarrassment of faking terrible dancing, or of being caught in his own lie.
