I got up this morning and felt like writing down some New Year Resolutions on this blog as - I felt - is tradition at this point. However, I guess I forgot to write any resolutions down last year so clearly my commitment to this tradition isn’t THAT great.
2015 was a year in which, I feel, an INSANE amount of things happened. I got involved with one society, fell out of that, reached the end of my first relationship, moved home, started working two jobs, got involved with my university’s philosophy club, made a ton of new friends, bought a car, made a couple trips to Melbourne (and Brisbane), did a whole lot of writing & started dating someone new.
Next year is already shaping up to be similarly stuffed full of stuff and I figured I’d write down my ambitions & hopes for it:
> University: I have one semester left. On top of that, I only have two units (and only one of those is just an internship) to pass before I can graduate. University has been fun & I do want to return for further studies but I am so ready to finish this degree.
> Europe: IT’S FINALLY HAPPENING. AFTER I GRADUATE I’M GOING TO FLY OVER TO EUROPE AND VISIT SOME COOL PLACES/PEOPLE I AM EXCITED.
> Writing: I do declare that 2016 will be the year of making cool shit. I’m determined to some podcasting stuff & also start trying to build my own outlet for my writing (with a little bit of freelancing on the side).
> Move back out: Living at home again has been great for helping me save for a car / Europe trip BUT I do want to live out of home again, preferably with friends so I’m going to look at making this happen towards the end of 2016.

A Working Hack’s Take on Choosing Your Career Path as a Writer.
Read this and had a super inspiring moment of epiphany in regards to writing. Always enjoyed screenplays over prose stories but didn't actually believe there was any legitimate ways of making money from it.
2013 was super-surprisingly eventful and I hope 2014 is similarly eventful.
Following on from some stuff I listed a while back as my NYRs, I wanted a write a post more comprehensively summarizing what I want out of this year:
The Dark Middle Chapter of University - First year was great, I imagine second year will be more difficult. Wanna make it through this year's courses with all passes, hopefully higher. Class-wise this year is looking pretty good with classes on literary/music/art journalism & some classes on games & web design.
BETTER JOB - It's great that I finally got a job last year! I have now quickly reached the discovery that this job is very bad. I need a new one that pays me...fairly and is more upfront about the hours they need me to work.
SHARES - Re: the bad financials & a long-harbored desire to try my hand at buying shares. I'm gonna put a bunch of money aside and get my dividends on!
CAR - My line of thinking at present is that saving up and acquiring a second-hand car is going to become significantly more difficult post-moving out. THEREFORE, I'm going to look at snagging a cheap vehicle before moving out becomes a thing. It may be an expense, but it would be worth it - especially with the job options it would open up,
COFFEE - I want to do a short course thing so as to further open up job options at cafes & the like.
TV - Here is a list of TV shows I want to get through this year (Anything else is a bonus): True Blood Season 7, Game of Thrones Season 4, Hannibal Season 2, Community Season 5 (In progress), Girls Seasons 2-3 (In progress), Newsroom Seasons 1-2, Twin Peaks Seasons 1-2 (In progress), (Finish) Veronica Mars Seasons 1-3, Orange is the New Black.
Revisit Melbourne! - Visiting Melbourne was a major highlight of last year. I am 100% down to visit again! Furthermore, I like the idea of a short trip to New Zealand or Singapore if possible.
FOODS - Foods are pretty rad. HOWEVER, I would like to reduce the amount of bad food I eat. Fairy normal desire, I imagine. More fruit & homecooked food will be on the plate as opposed to frozen or takeaway food.
COOKING - Re: Foods, cooking has proven to be a super useful skill in the last few months and I look forward to cooking more. Fuck the haters, cooking and eating your own meals is rad.
WRITING - I want to get back into games writing on a regular basis! This is currently underway and I while I hope it goes somewhere I will be quite happy if I continue to build my portfolio at this pace.
WRITING 2 - I want to put together at least one short film script. This is spurred by a bunch of external factors as well as a liking of the script format (seriously though, may need a separate blog-post to detail such affinities).
WRITING 3 - I want to try and write and self-publish some kind of eBook this year. I haven't nailed anything down quite yet BUT am determined to make THINGS HAPPEN.
RELATIONSHIP - I have been with my current Girlfriend for eight months. Things are kinda really great. I hope they continue to be really great through the next year.

When being young starts getting old
A new place saves face or so I’m told
Be the new kid, on an old block
A chalk outline on a playground blacktop
I’m just a moment, so don’t let me pass you by
We could be a story in the morning, but we’ll be a legend tonight
Why Mortal Engines should have its own film series, or, Why I'm Not Letting This Go
For those of you who don’t know (let’s face it, unless you’re on the Mortal Engines Tag, not many), the Mortal Engines Quartet and its prequel series, Fever Crumb, are an award-winning YA (if they can be classified as YA) series by Philip Reeve, that first appeared way, way back in 2001. It heavily owes its setting to the steampunk genre, but is set in the far-flung future where the Earth has been mostly reduced to a desolate wasteland.
It also features moving cities that eat each other.
Now, you’ve either thought, THAT SOUNDS AMAZING, or calling bullshit.
I assure you, dear reader, that bullshit it ain’t.

So, I have finally sat down to write an update post for this Tumblr blog and sort of explain some of the reasons behind my greatly diminished Tumblr presence.
So the first reason is that University is back - this semester I'm doing:
Literature & The Film > Loving it. Readings & Tutorials are a blast
Literature & The Political > Enjoying it, our Sherlock Holmes readings were really enjoyable and I'm looking forward to analyzing Heart of Darkness this week ^_^
Introduction to Video Games > The practical side of this is less than engaging for someone who spent a lot of high school trying to learn as much about Games Development as they could but the class is still pretty good as a solid introduction to the world of video games theory and academia - something I'm super keen to get involved in
Chemistry, Drugs & The Quest for Immortality > less intriguing than it sounds, but still a pretty compelling class. Work load is quite small too - which is a plus.
Yes, so Uni is back and I'm throwing myself into it with the usual first half of the semester enthusiasm. I've also gotten into hanging out at the bar a lot more and fallen in with both the Philosophy Society & Tolkien Society. Travel time (3 or so hours a day) is still a pain but currently I'm of the mind its definitely worth it.
So the second thing that has taken its toll on my Tumblr-time is my new job. I'm working at a Service Station about ten minutes walk from my house and while the pay isn't great - it lets me get to Uni and build up skills on my resume that'll make it much easier to get better jobs after this semester. I should also mention that I'm working every day I'm not at Uni so I end up awfully tired and that's quite lame.
The last big thing that's kept me from Tumblr has been my first Girlfriend ^_^
We started going out after a night out a few months ago and I honestly don't even know how to begin talking about her. From going to Uni together and seeing EVERY MOVIE THIS YEAR (Further details down the post) to that time she bought me a Record Player so I could embrace my vinyl-fetishism, I've never been happier spending time with anyone else in my life. We even went to Melbourne together for Oz Comic Con over the mid-semester break and it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life - How I wish I could live there. I won't go into it because I could probably write a whole other blog post on Melbourne and this is already pretty long
So as a result of these previous thre factors I havent had much time for consuming games/TV but I have spent an abnormal amount of time at the cinema, without any further ado '2013 Movies So Far According to Fergus':
Iron Man 3 - Better than 2. Generally a really fun movie.
Star Trek Into Darkness - Not as enjoyable as the first one. Loved Cumberbatch & Simon Pegg though.
Spring Breakers - Absolutely jaw-dropping. Like nothing else I've ever seen and it has definitely stuck with me.
The Great Gatsby - Pretty decent. Dicaprio was excellent. Peaked too early (first major party scene). Solid soundtrack & use of music. First third of the film was directed by a madman. Keen to rewatch on DVD
The Lone Ranger - Not complete shit. A couple of good lines and scenes but not exceptional in any particular way.
Now You See Me - Such a great premise and cast let down by a script that outright cheats
Man of Steel - I thouht it was good. Loved the visual side of the movie, hated the Nolan-story side of the movie.
This Is the End - hilarious as expected
The World's End - An absolute blast of the movie, although I'm not certain on the ending. Masterful direction.
Kick Ass 2- Disappointing in a bunch of ways but not completely. Kind of a good time. Refer to the review I wrote on it.
Pacific Rim - GLORIOUS ROBOT ON MONSTER PUNCHING. Questionable Script. Awesome scientists. Idris Elba.
Elysium - Not as good as District 9 but then what is. Fantastic villain.
Crawlspace - Dumb Australian sci-fi horror action. Very Matthew Reilly inspired. Pretty consistently enjoyable time whether you roll with it or not.
So with movies out of the way, I thought I'd just throw out a few other media things:
HOLY SHIT HOW GOOD IS BREAKING BAD?
HOLT SHIT HOW BAD IS DEXTER?
DIVEKICK > No serously Divekick is an incredible fighting game and I give it all my recommendations.
Music-wise, super keen to see Fall Out Boy & Imagine Dragons next month ^_^ Also seeing The Getaway Plan this week and Amanda Palmer the next. Definitely keen to give recommendations to Neon Trees, You Me at Six, The Von Hertzen Brothers, Sunrise Avenue, British India Hollywood Undead & Ken Ashkorp.
I'm also on Goodreads now if you wanna follow me.
So yeah, there's a little - and by little I mean big and lengthy - update on my little old life :P
(EDIT PS - Also, there's totally the Australian election this weekend and I am voting the shit out of the Greens. Fuck Tony Abbott for being an ineffective tool & although Kevin Rudd gets points from me for the prioritization of Gay Rights, he loses them in the face of the violations of Human rights surrounding his governments treatment of Asylum Seekers. Blerg. Enough politics)
Just wanted to say I've missed seeing you on tumblr but I hope that means you're having a happy-good-non-internetty life. Have a good day!
Hi there!I have indeed been having a super happy-life as of late, albeit a very busy one that has made it tricky to keep my Tumblr updated. I do really want to post something about the last four or so months soon though. Come off Anon and I'd love to talk more xD
