Most of Tanner's happiest memories stem from those mornings and afternoons on her parent's small farm working with her dad on his tractors. While it was never official he was known a bit as a handyman for mechanical things, knew his way around a tractor better than most. What started off as handing her father tools during a project, something that needed to be completed efficiently because an out of work tractor was no good for farm productivity, blossomed into her father talking her through everything he was doing.
While she never really believed in that whole 'purpose in life' sell because life just was, you worked, you got through the day, Tanner took to anything mechanical innately. It was easy to learn by watching her father, by getting her hands on and following the cool guidance he offered, yet it was the toiling she did on her own that took her further than fixing the tractors for the farm. In shop classes she was a star pupil. She had a part-time job in high school working under a mechanic. And then there was the fact that Tanner devoured anything she could as far as mechanical texts went.
As a teen the better she became with welding she even started to branch out from simply fixing things and made some of her own art. Nothing that Tanner would show off anywhere or attempt to sell, they were, in a way, an opportunity to practice and hone her skills. Even if at the time she had no designs on what her future would look like. Things happened and she reacted and adjusted.
Community college opened her up to business classes and the idea that she could have her own garage. The farm life wasn't really her thing. Tanner loved the beauty of horses and oddly enjoyed the harder life of what living on a farm entailed, she just never really connected in the way that her friends had. Horsepower was something completely different to her and she loved the possibilities that mechanics offered.
Over time Tanner watched her small town change and grow. Paxton held onto it's small town charm while parts and pieces of it began to look like some cities she'd visited. Progress wasn't necessarily something Tanner was against but she didn't want to see her town become unrecognizable. Pressure on her parents land/farm, even her own property, amongst the ranchers around Paxton pushed her to round up with her fellow generational locals that felt capitalism stepping on their neck. The way of life she'd known was being threatened and Tanner took it a little personally.
With her own garage and fully supporting the cowboys she began to overcharge any customer of her shop that wasn't a local. A small town Tanner knew who everyone was. It may have made her some more money, doing that, but it went into supporting anything the cowboys needed. She fixed up trucks for them to move their product and found creative ways for them to carry their loads concealed and undetected. Even earned a brand and became a hand by creating a diversion for the truckers when word came about that the law enforcement was going to make a roadside bust.
There for the cause and to preserve the way of life she and the resistance of Paxton have known, Tanner sleeps at night knowing that she's a part of something meaningful. Being a hand in the Cowboy Mafia also ensures that her family's farm is under protection and Tanner will do anything to keep her parents safe.
PLOT ARC.
She can fix anything on wheels and even some things with wings. Her skills come in hand for their group, she can adjust anything the truckers need and slowly, sheβs started to help logistically manage the truckers as well. This way of life has given her purpose and respect and the ability to protect her own family β for that sheβs grateful.
