This is something very special to me so I needed to just write out my feelings. As a young, black girl growing into a young woman I consistently had my nose buried in a Harry Potter book. I loved the magical fantasy world that Rowling created (I am still waiting for my Hogwarts letter by the way). In particular, I saw myself so directly reflected in Hermione. She was a nerdy, precocious know-it-all. So was I. She had brown eyes, large teeth and untameable, frizzy brown hair. So did I. She cared more about being the top of her class than climbing the social ladder. So did I. I even related to her being a Mudblood in that I came from a mixed background. I was neither “pure” white or “pure” black (aka not a Pureblood). I remember thinking, “Wow. Hermione is ME”. I felt so connected and strongly tied to the character that when the casting for the Harry Potter movies was announced, I was a little let down. I thought “How silly of me. A lead female character in a huge series like this could never be anything BUT white and of course, she could never be black”. Don’t get me wrong. Emma Watson is an amazing young woman who played an excellent and spot on Hermione. It was just that, for the first time, I felt like “Hermione isn’t me”. She was no longer a representation of me in this fantasy world that I could escape to whenever I wanted. She was a different person. I couldn’t be her. So, of course, when I learned there was to be a black actress playing Hermione in the stage production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, I got really excited. Not nearly excited however, as I was when JK Rowling tweeted her support of a black Hermione and that "white skin was never specified”. For EVERY young girl that felt as tied to this character as I was, you ARE Hermione. Regardless of race or nationality, every one of you book loving, brilliant, witty, loyal, curious, and brave young girls is Hermione. For young women of color, and all young women who looked to Hermione as a heroine, thank you JK Rowling.

Okay. Haven't written in a long time but that season 5b premeire though!!! I don't know if it's just me but I felt that making the entire episode about Tyrese slowly dying was a bit much given the show never really gave him a chance to really grow on us. Tyrese was a character that had very few lines and very little screen time. It was as though the writers wanted his death to have a lasting impact on the viewers but, for me, it just didnt. To be perfectly honest, I didn't even bat an eyelash at his death. Don't get me wrong. I thought Tyrese was a sweet and very likeable character but it feels like the writers have created this pattern of bringing characters on who are likeable but they don't allow us to get too attached. Definitely not as attached as we are to Rick or a certain crossbow wielding badass. It seems like the writers simply create expendable characters that they can continue to kill off to keep up the danger element but not risk completely shattering the fanbase. If the fans are really going to feel a loss we need to feel completely invested in the character. I felt like Tyrese did not get his full story. I also hold on to hope that maybe the writers will pull through in a major way in the finale. All I know is that the writers better show that the group is severely impacted and doesn't just carry on as if no loss occurred. Beth and Tyrese dying back to back needs to MEAN something. Regardless, I'm still extremely happy that the show is back and so excited to see what the rest of season 5 has in store!
