Be warned: this doodle inspired a colossal rant. I almost quit drawing cause of art school crits, like my style being "too anime." Lemme destroy those fools. 1. Anime is a pejorative term in the west, associated with "bug eyed weebs." However, Eastern and Western cartoons have opposite objectives. 2. Anime "same faces" were informed by the subtleties in Asian features. Standardized faces atop dynamic bodies in anime are not rudimentary, but intentional. Asians have technique in spades. 3. This subverts Western ideals of individualism. Americans desire diversity in their character designs (esp. racial / sexual representation). However, this obsession with uniqueness gives American cartoons an extreme range from realistic to crude. 4. Although anime influenced my childhood, I'm not defined by it artistically. I Frankenstein the compelling aspects I find from eastern and western approaches. 5. If you must label my style, call it "caricature." I love celebrating yet exaggerating people through cartooning. I try to convey eastern sensibilities through a western finish. 6. My closest colleagues draw anime unabashedly, and they're damn good at what they do. No one's style should be looked down upon, especially when backed up with pure skill, not quirks. So don't come for my style, either!
