HER FIRST MISTAKE IS not being faster, not leaving before he wakes. she knows the moment she makes eye contact with those intoxicating blue hues that she's in trouble — that she'll melt against him again, will do anything he asks of her if it means she gets to stay for another minute. and then he'll find an excuse to toss her aside for days and she'll have no choice but to accept. it's the returning she should opt out of and yet she ends up here every time. she ought to think higher of herself, but the option of falling asleep next to a warm body wins every time, and a bruised heart seems like a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things. « i really shouldn't, » she counters with a sad smile, but she's already drifting back to him and his arm is around her and she's flown right back into the spider's net. « we're rehearsing a new routine. and what would we even do the whole day, hm ? » she raises one eyebrow to invite the challenge.

he  sees  the  shift  in  her  gaze.  the  first  glance  was  a  no,  though  the  second,  he  could  sense  it  in  her  smile,  told  him  she  just  needed  a  little  more  convincing.  “oh,  i  can  think  of  a  few  things  we  could  do  the  whole  day,"  he  replies,  a  smirk  tugging  on  his  lips.  logan  shifted  so  he  was  sitting  up  beside  her,  the  sheets  still  draping  his  legs.  “i  was  thinking  we  could  go  get  breakfast…  that  place  you  like  down  the  block,”  he  begins,  thumb  brushing  against  the  exposed  skin  at  her  hips.  his  lips  placed  a  soft,  open-mouthed  kiss  to  her  shoulder,  peppering  a  few  up  to  her  neck  between  his  words.  “could  stop  by  my  studio  with  me  to  grab  a  couple  things…  you  always  eye  that  store  next  to  it  too,”  logan  trailed,  his  gaze  fixed  on  her.  she  was  good  –  too  good  for  him.  too  good  to  be  something  he  didn't  hold  onto  like  he  might  lose  it.  he  knew  that.  felt  it  when  he  looked  at  her,  too,  especially  times  like  these.  this  time  he  kissed  her  cheek.  then  right  at  the  corner  of  her  lips.  “make  our  way  back  here..  i  promise  i'll  actually  try  and  watch  the  movie  this  time."  natalya  was  more  than  he  could  dream  of,  which  is  exactly  why  he  couldn't  let  himself  get  too  close.  befpre  the  thoughts  could  stay,  he  leaned  forward  with  a  short  kiss  to  her  lips,  not  being  able  to  stop  the  tug  of  a  smile  on  his  when  he  pulled  away,  seeing  she  wasn't  ready  to  yet.  “come  on,  nat,”  he  pleaded,  free  hand  coming  up  to  cup  her  jaw,  meeting  her  eyes  with  a  grin.  ”you  don't  really  want  to  go,  do  you?"  it  was  his  turn  to  raise  an  eyebrow,  waiting  for  her  next  move. 

a  sigh  slips  from  her,  gentle  and  unforced.  “ i  missed  people. ”  not  home,  because  she  still  could  not  imagine  walking  down  the  street  where  she  had  spent  her  whole  life  with  her  family,  and  she  had  been  careful  not  to  let  her  parents  know  she  was  back,  but  the  friends  she  had  left  behind.  and,  stubbornly,  despite  all  her  efforts  to  deny  it,  someone  else  too.  “ i’m  spending  the  holidays  here  this  year.  maybe  we’ll  run  into  each  other  a  few  more  times.  i’m  sure  we  have  a  lot  of  catching  up  to  do. ”  she  says  it  as  if  it  were  simple,  as  if  there  were  nothing  tangled  or  delicate  hiding  beneath  the  words,  nothing  messy  waiting  to  be  acknowledged  if  either  of  them  looked  too  closely.  then  her  smile  widens  slightly,  warmth  returning  to  her  voice  with  familiar  ease.  “ i  heard  your  name  a  lot  while  i  was  away.  you  made  it  big,  just  like  i  always  knew  you  would.  so  tell  me,  how’s  life  as  a  famous  and  important  man  treating  you? ”

“i  don't  think  there's  a  world  where  i  don't  like  you,  cathy,”  he  said,  as  if  it  held  no  weight.  though  it  put  a  heavy  one  on  his  chest,  if  only  for  a  moment.  after  all  this  time,  a  goodbye  that  felt  like  the  last.  the  period  at  the  end  of  the  sentence.  ares  couldn't  look  at  her  with  hate  in  his  heart.  that  would  never  be  the  case.  he  couldn't  let  all  of  these  emotions  through  to  her,  not  in  the  middle  of  this  party,  where  he  noticed  a  few  more  eyes  on  them  than  he'd  predicted.so,  with  a  soft  smile,  he  played  it  off.  it  took  time  to  come  to  terms  with  their  separation,  and  time  had  healed  his  wounds.  but,  every  now  and  then,  he  was  reminded  of  how  true  they  once  were  together.  it  was  like  a  phantom  pain  –  when  the  scar  itches  and  you  just  can't  help  but  scratch  it,  and  you're  reminded  of  how  it  felt  before  you  healed.  yet,  with  her  standing  before  him,  he  didn't  want  to  let  any  of  that  to  interfere  with  what  this  time  could  bring  them.  life  had  changed  so  much  in  the  years  that  had  passed.  ares  would  like  to  get  to  know  who  she  was  now,  in  the  possible  event  she  had  changed  over  time.  after  everything  that  the  past  had  brought  her.  he  knew  chances  of  her  being  back  were  slm  to  none,  yet  this  time  of  year  always  had  a  way  of  bringing  new  beginnings.  “people  missed  you  too,”  he  said,  drinking  from  his  cup  in  practiced  fashion.  undoubtedly,  he  found  himself  on  that  list,  too.  "oh  yeah?  we'll  definitely  make  sure  too.  i  took  some  time  off  to  spend  it  here.  funny  timing."  they  teeter  around  the  inevitable  feelings  that  are  meant  to  surface.  it's  like  they're  saying  just  enough  without  baring  it  all.  tone  easy  as  she  changed  the  subject,  a  bit  of  pride  in  the  look  on  his  face  at  her  praise.  “thats  subjective,  really,  but  it  feels  good.  crazy  to  think  it  happened  to  me,  but  i  feel  lucky.  what  about  you,  cat?”

HE HAS TO GET IT RIGHT, every single time. he has to get it right until it's impossible to get it wrong, and if he stops for a moment too long to let exhaustion settle he's not sure he'll ever get through this — whatever this is. he watches the ball fly through the hoop yet again and feels no sense of accomplishment or victory, only an incessant need to do it again. he'd run himself to death on this very court if not for the fact he's got company now, and arlo's head whips around to look at jeremiah, a habitual scowl appearing on his visage that the other man has not earned. « maybe you should pay less attention to me and focus on yourself. fumbling a chance for a three - pointer twice is kinda low, » he mutters as he stills in front of the other man. jeremiah seems happy to be here. arlo briefly wonders what that's like. « i'm not here to have fun, i'm here to work. i suggest you do the same. »

with  outstretched  hands,  he  silently  asks  for  the  ball,  dribbling  mindlessly  while  they  speak.  he  needed  to  do  something  with  his  hands.  something  to  distract  his  brain  from  why  arlo's  distant  nature  truly  got  under  his  skin.  either  way,  a  team  needed  everyone  on  the  same  page.  he  was  simply  if  arlo  had  the  same  mindset.  wrong  was  never  an  option  for  him.  with  the  mention  of  the  missed  shots,  jeremiah’s  jaw  clenched,  the  happy  go  lucky  persona  he  had  slipping  for  just  a  moment.  but  with  a  shrug  of  his  shoulders,  he  was  back  to  normal,  playing  it  off  as  nothing.  “a  lot  to  say  when  you  fumbled  almost  every  rebound  tonight,”  jeremiah  kept  his  tone  light,  passing  the  ball  back  to  arlo.  “a  smile  every  once  in  awhile  doesn’t  kill  anyone,”  he  retorted,  stance  shortening  to  get  in  position  to  play.  “i’m  really  not  trying  to  come  at  you,  just  passing  along  a  message.”  

his  elbow  rested  against  the  counter  she  had  cleaned  only  moments  before,  and  irritation  flared  instantly.  nabi  reached  behind  his  arm  and  pulled  it  forward  just  enough  to  throw  off  his  balance,  the  movement  quick  and  unapologetic.  " move.  i  just  cleaned  that. "  the  growl  in  her  voice  lingered  behind  her  as  she  turned  away,  already  done  with  him  before  she  even  started  making  his  order.  she  handled  the  drink  with  minimal  care,  doing  only  what  was  necessary  to  finish  the  task  before  dropping  it  onto  the  counter  in  front  of  him.  " here. "  for  a  second  she  looked  at  the  cup  rather  than  at  him,  as  though  even  eye  contact  would  require  more  effort  than  he  deserved.  then  her  gaze  lifted,  sharp  and  unimpressed.  " now  get  out. "

there  were  probably  a  thousand  people  who  had  tried  exactly  what  he  did,  and  by  her  tone,  he  knew  they'd  all  failed.  did  mason  think  he  was  special  enough  to  crack  through  her  shell?  absolutely.  persistence  was  something  he  wasn't  new  to.  it  took  a  lot  more  sweat  and  tears  than  he'd  like  to  admit  to  get  to  his  position.  “ouch,”  he  exhaled,  a  chuckle  leaving  soon  after  her  comment.  she  was  feisty,  something  else  that  had  always  kept  his  interest.  although  it  didn't  look  like  it  from  the  outside,  mason  wasn't  a  total  douchebag,  so  he  knew  better  than  to  make  any  more  comments  for  the  day.  when  she  threw  his  balance  off,  he  took  it  lightly,  a  shake  of  his  head.  “do  you  treat  all  your  regulars  like  this?”  mason  teased,  taking  the  coffee  from  her  once  it  was  handed.  “later,  nabi,”  he  said  as  he  took  the  first  sip  of  his  coffee,  nodding  his  head  to  her.  he  would  go  for  now.  he  had  his  own  job  to  do. what  mason  didn't  know  was  that  his  own  job  planned  to  be  grueling.  halfway  through  the  day,  he  knew  he  would  need  another  coffee.  he  was  probably  going  to  stay  there  well  after  it  was  time  to  leave  anyway,  so  he  might  as  well  grab  one  now.  maybe  he  could  see  the  barista  again,  who  he  swore  he  knew  from  somewhere  other  than  the  coffee  shop,  but  he  couldn't  place  it.  much  to  his  enjoyment,  she  was  still  there  when  he  entered.  his  grin  widened  when  she  rolled  her  eyes  so  blatantly  at  him,  stepping  to  the  counter  to  see  what  she  would  come  up  with  this  time.  “no,  i  didn't  come  just  to  piss  you  off.  though  i  can't  say  it  isn't  a  nice  surprise,”  mason  gave  her  his  order,  paid,  then  stepped  to  the  side.  “which  counter  did  you  just  clean?  wouldn't  want  you  to  work  too  hard.”

at  first,  the  shape  inside  one  of  the  outer  tanks  looked  like  debris  carried  in  by  the  wind,  some  torn  sheet  of  plastic  or  dark  bundle  of  soaked  cloth  that  had  fallen  where  it  did  not  belong,  and  annoyance  rose  in  her  before  fear  did,  practical  and  immediate,  because  foreign  objects  could  hurt  the  animals  and  turn  one  bad  night  into  something  worse  by  morning.  but  as  nanami  moved  closer,  the  beam  of  her  flashlight  caught  the  pale  suggestion  of  skin  beneath  the  water,  the  curve  of  something  almost  like  shoulders,  a  body  where  no  body  was  supposed  to  be,  and  her  steps  slowed  before  she  could  tell  herself  to  keep  walking.  rainwater  clung  to  her  lashes  as  she  reached  the  edge  of  the  tank,  the  whole  world  narrowing  to  that  dark  water  and  the  impossible  shape  inside  it,  and  when  she  finally  spoke,  her  voice  came  out  softer  than  she  expected,  almost  swallowed  by  the  dripping  gutters  and  the  hush  of  the  sea  beyond  the  fence.  “ who’s  there? ”

storms  usually  had  a  tendency  to  work  in  freya's  favor.  tonight  was  far  from  normal,  having  no  clue  how  she'd  traveled  so  far  so  quickly.  it  seemed  the  water  had  other  plans,  mother  nature  making  her  take  a  different  course,  and  all  she  could  do  was  keep  herself  safe  through  it.  the  storm  was  so  powerful  that  it  dimmed  her  own,  only  able  to  manipulate  it  enough  to  bring  her  somewhere  safe.  she  felt  the  change  in  the  water  once  the  rain  had  finally  stopped.  it  almost  felt  manufactured  –  like  any  small  thing  would  throw  off  its  balance.  she  would  probably  do  just  that…  where  did  she  land?  why  could  she  only  hear  the  turtles?  it  only  took  a  few  minutes  for  them  to  communicate  to  figure  out  she  was  in  some  sort  of  rescue  center.  most  importantly,  she  was  stuck.  great.  it  looked  dark  outside  from  what  she  could  tell,  so  there  was  a  good  chance  she  had  to  hide  out  till  morning  when  the  humans  returned.  freya  thought  of  trying  her call,  but  she  didn't  want  to  make  a  mess  of  the  turtle's  home. she  swam  aimlessly,  so  much  so  that  she  didn't  hear  the  footsteps  approaching.  it  was  only  when  the  night  shone  through  the  glass  that  she  felt  a  wave  of  panic.  her  tail  whipped  itself  from  the  direction  of  the  light.  quickly,  she  ducked  behind  some  of  the  debris,  hopeful  the  person  didn't  see.  to  her  disadvantage,  it  was  the  opposite.  the  voice  was  soft,  almost  scared,  but  the  animals  around  her  trusted  it.  she  chose  her  movements  carefully,  coming  up  to  the  glass  from  the  bottom  of  the  tank.  “don't  freak  out,”  she  said,  stretching  her  voice  to  let  it  reach  the  stranger's  ears.  her  hair  flowed  over  her  shoulders,  a  glisten  around  her  in  contrast  with  the  dark  water.  “come,  come  closer,”  freya  requested,  using  enough  of  the  call  in  her  tone  to  leverage  the  fear  the  human  had.  “they  say  you're  really  kind…  pretty,  too.”  she  flashed  a  smile,  “can  you  let  me  out  of  here?  i'll…  let  you  ask  a  couple  of  questions.”

WHEN YOU KNOW YOU KNOW, and he knows frankie stands him. that's good enough for him most days and whilst troye's arrogance reaches alarming heights at times he also battles the belief that's lodged in the cavity in his chest where there should be a heart — the belief that he is inherently impossible to love. it's easy to conform to this, does not harm him more than he harms others, and it makes whatever it is he has with frankie make sense. he does believe he loves her some days; does believe that he could settle down here and find a way to force happiness. « i thought maybe you'd cut me some slack, considering you made me mad first, » he points out teasingly, though it's an easy thing to do. spoiled boy so used to receiving before he has to ask. any sort of resistance, intentional or not, feels like a personal attack. it's why, when he opens the door for her, and notices the crinkles around her eyes as she smiles at his driver, the bubbling laughter that spills, that his hands furl into knuckles at his side. he adds the task of looking for a new chauffeur to his ever - growing mental list. he's prepared to sit there, pouting in silence the entire way home where all his challengers are eradicated, when she speaks. « what the fuck, frankie ? i didn't even say anything, » he argues immediately, taking the bait the way she's bound to know he will. « can't you just let the man do his job ? »

it  was  similar  to  a  dream  state.  sometimes  he  was  perfect,  the  one  thing  she  had  always  wished  for.  other  days,  it  was  as  close  as  it  could  get  to  a  nightmare.  yet,  when  she  woke  up,  she  always  woke  back  up  in  the  same  exact  spot.  the  spot  where  she  would  take  the  good  and  the  bad  from  him  each  day.  she  wasn't  the  easiest  to  be  with,  she  knew  that.  tended  to  be  all  over  the  place  and  frazzled,  even  in  her  emotions,  but  she  meant  well.  she  loved  him,  imperfections  and  all.  “the  wind  could  blow  the  wrong  way,  and  you'd  get  mad,”  she  teased  back,  aware  of  the  small  dig  and  truth  the  phrase  held.  it  was  hard  to  ignore  how  spoiled  he  was,  and  somehow,  they  found  it  cute.  part  of  all  the  little  quirks  and  quips  that  made  troye  himself,  what  kept  her  with  him.  even  the  parts  that  interrupted  the  good  nights,  like  the  way  he  pouted  in  the  seat.  his  jealousy  would  get  in  the  way  at  any  moment;  it  could.  she  sat  at  the  other  side  of  the  seat,  her  own  arms  crossed  over  her  chest.  “you  didn't  have  to.  you  just--”  frankie  stopped  themselves  and  turned  to  the  driver  again,  forcing  a  smile  on  her  face  as  she  asked  him  to  roll  up  the  partition.  within  a  matter  of  seconds,  they  were  as  alone  as  they  could  be,  before  she  continued.  “saying  hi,  please,  and  thank  you  is  letting  the  man  do  his  job.  throwing  a  fit  with  me  every  time  i  smile  at  someone  isn't  doing  your  job  as  a  good  boyfriend.  how  much  do  i  have  to  do  to  show  you  it's  only  you?”  she  questioned,  brows  raised  at  him.  her  head  turned  to  look  out  the  window.  the  passion  from  earlier  now  fueling  a  different  fire  between  them.  “you're  so  fucking  frustrating.” 

after  finishing  the  last  sip,  naeun  let  out  a  quiet  sigh  and  returned  to  the  bar,  deciding  one  more  drink  would  be  enough  before  heading  home.  she  noticed  the  presence  beside  her  almost  immediately,  though  she  kept  her  attention  on  the  bartender  for  a  moment  longer,  pretending  his  movements  were  far  more  interesting  than  the  man  standing  there,  as  if  the  faint  trace  of  his  cologne  was  not  pulling  at  her  attention.  " french  martini, "  she  replied  casually,  only  then  turning  toward  him,  her  expression  calm  as  she  studied  him  more  closely.  a  small  smile  appeared  at  the  corner  of  her  lips.  " you  can. "  after  giving  her  order  to  the  bartender,  she  looked  back  at  him,  resting  lightly  against  the  counter.  " are  you  going  to  join  me,  or  are  you  planning  to  admire  me  all  night? "  she  asked,  the  invitation  tucked  neatly  beneath  the  ease  of  her  voice.

zeke  ordered  another  drink  for  himself  as  well,  a  gin  and  tonic,  and  couldn't  help  the  sly  smile  that  grew  at  her  invitation.  “you  think  i  can't  do  two  things  at  once?”  he  answered,  standing  up  a  little  straighter.  “you  lead  the  way,  i'll  follow.”  zeke  stated  as  the  bartender  came  with  their  next  round,  the  two  leaving  and  making  their  way  to  an  empty  space  in  the  club.  “what's  your  name?”  he  asked,  leaning  forward  towards  her  ear  to  combat  the  music  flowing  through  the  speakers.  naeun.  that  would  be  something  hard  to  forget,  and  so  would  the  way  the  beat  seemed  to  influence  her.  his  intuition  told  him  he'd  be  playing  a  dangerous  game  with  her,  and  that  pulled  him  further.  their  bodies  swayed  to  the  music,  moving  in  sync,  and  he  caught  every  sparkle  in  her  eye.  there  was  no  way  they  knew  each  other,  though  it  felt  like  they  had.  like  her  energy  was  something  he  found  himself  lost  in.  quite  frankly,  he  had  to  know  more.  it  was  his  mission,  he  thought  to  himself,  to  make  tonight  the  first  of  many  with  the  mystery  girl. they  must  have  been  on  the  dancefloor  for  at  least  an  hour.  both  of  their  drinks  were  gone,  both  were  slightly  out  of  breath,  so  he  guided  them  to  the  edge  where  they  could  hear  each  other  better.  “are  you  from  around  here?  i  hate  that  this  is  the  first  time  i'm  seeing  you.”  zeke  leaned  against  the  wall,  elbow  propping  him  up  over  her  as  he  looked  down.  his  free  hand  outstretched  to  move  the  loose  strands  of  hair  back  from  her  face.  his  hand  came  back  down  to  his  side  after,  even  though  he  yearned  to  rest  it  at  her  side.  he  wanted  to  know  anything  she  would  tell  him.  becoming  entranced  this  way  wasn't  usual  for  him,  and  he  wanted  to  see  it  through  as  much  as  she'd  allow. 

IT'S NOT OFTEN HE GETS the privilege of playing the rational older brother, so when the call comes he's always there — most of the time anyway. these days he rarely drinks, hyper - focused on training and his gaze set on gold medals and media coverage. it's exhausting to the point that a drunk call from dana is a much needed distraction. he keeps bumping into strangers in here though, air thick and music loud, as he searches for a familiar figure. and he finds one, albeit not the one he came for. she is a distraction though. « hello, gorgeous, » he coos softly against her ear when he's directly behind her, brown locks tickling his cheek when he leans back to sport a smile in her direction. the whole world seems to burn up around them. « and you didn't invite me ? i'm hurt, erin. »

she  needed  a  night  like  tonight.  she  was  owed  one;  the  semester  was  long  and  grueling,  but  she'd  made  it  through.  she  always  had,  with  flying  colors,  and  that  was  just  how  she  liked  things.  she  rarely  wasted  her  time  –  it  was  too  valuable.  now  that  she  had  a  little  more  room  to  breathe,  erin  had  let  her  best  friend  drag  her  out  to  this  party.  number  of  shots  she'd  taken  had  been  forgotten,  but  she'd  recognize  his  voice  anywhere.  even  his  voice  was  laid  back,  relaxed,  like  he'd  never  worried  about  the  weight  of  the  world,  medals  and  all.  part  of  erin  envied  that,  but  she  knew  where  she  was  going  and  wanted  to  work  to  get  there.  he  was  a  distraction,  someone  as  handsome  as  him  couldn't  help  being  a  distraction,  but  erin  had  refused  to  let  her  mind  go  there.  “i  figured  you'd  be  busy  training,  you  drinking  tonight?”  the  alcohol  tempted  her  further,  though.  “or  did  you  come  just  to  bother  me  royce?”

             now   that   the   thing   that   had   bothered   him   was   out   in   the   open   ,   aspen   felt   as   if   a   weight   had   lifted   from   his   shoulders. “they’re   posh   idiots   who   are   too   concerned   about   image.   since   when   did   a   tattoo   sleeve   hurt   anybody   ,”    he   muttered   ,   gently   brushing   millie’s   hair   out   of   her   eyes.   the   small   sigh   that   escaped   her   as   she   snuggled   deeper   into   the   couch   made   his   heart   melt.   there   was   nothing   he   wouldn’t   do   for   his   baby   ,   but   he   hated   that   surrounding   circumstances   making   her   life   harder.    “i   have   considered   maybe   moving   her   closer   to   home.   it   wasn’t   my   choice   of   school   at   the   start   ,   but   i   just   wanted   to   give   her   the   best   chance   to   succeed   …”    the   thought   ,   so   clearly   repeated   from   his   parents   ,   made   his   face   twist   in   an   uncomfortable   grimace.    “might   just   have   to   bite   the   bullet   and   do   it.   it’s   not   worth   her   being   unhappy   ,   huh ?”

“especially  when  the  sleeve  looks  fucking  sick,”  he  complimented  him,  nudging  his  arm  with  his  own  elbow.  even  if  it  was  brief,  he  hoped  he  could  give  aspen  that  space  to  relax  –  to  let  whatever  was  weighing  on  his  chest  go.  he  knew  aspen  would  do  the  same  if  the  situation  called  for  it.  “image  is  all  they  care  about.  i  know  they're  disorderly  behind  closed  doors.  all  that  matters  is  how  everyone  else  sees  them.  shallow.”   watching  the  way  he  was  with  his  daughter  was  admirable,  made  him  want  to  aspire  for  that  one  day,  when  the  time  was  right,  even  if  it  was  something  he  never  thought  he'd  achieve.  “she'll  succeed  wherever  she  goes,  you  know  that  too,  sometimes  i  swear  she's  too  smart  for  her  own  good,"  ares  let  a  small  laugh  in  an  attempt  to  lighten  the  mood.  “and,  i'm  sure  you  know  what's  best  for  her,  and  it  isn't  being  around  people  like  that.  not  worth  it  at  all.  if  you  need  any  help  with  it  all  you  know  i'm  there  for  you.” 

for  a  second,  catherine  only  stood  there  with  the  smile  still  on  her  mouth,  not  gone,  not  false,  simply  caught  between  what  the  evening  had  been  and  what  it  had  suddenly  become.  aries  looked  real  in  a  way  her  thoughts  of  him  never  did,  no  longer  softened  by  distance  or  sharpened  by  regret,  and  it  was  almost  ridiculous  how  quickly  her  body  remembered  what  her  pride  had  spent  so  long  trying  to  forget.  still,  catherine  was  not  cruel,  and  she  was  not  a  coward,  no  matter  how  badly  she  had  once  made  herself  look  like  both  by  leaving  without  giving  him  enough  words  to  hold  onto,  so  she  kept  moving,  greeting  everyone  as  she  had  meant  to  do,  letting  the  minutes  gather  around  her  until  she  could  trust  her  face  again.  by  the  time  she  reached  him,  the  surprise  had  settled  somewhere  deeper,  still  bright  and  painful,  but  quieter  now,  tucked  beneath  the  warmth  she  had  always  known  how  to  offer  even  when  her  hands  felt  empty.  “ well,  look  what  the  wind  brought  in.  what  a  surprise.  i  never  would’ve  imagined  finding  you  here. ”  her  gaze  lingered  for  one  careful  second  too  long,  helplessly  human  before  she  could  call  it  back,  and  when  she  spoke  again,  her  voice  held  its  sweetness  like  a  glass  held  too  delicately.  “ you’re  more  handsome  than  i  remember. ”

a  crowd  was  something  ares  found  easy  to  conquer,  easy  to  secure.  maybe  its  what  has  helped  surge  his  career  forward,  the  ease  he  found  in  social  settings  giving  him  an  advantage.  he  had  gotten  there  just  as  things  started  to  pick  up,  making  his  way  around  the  space  and  giving  out  the  obligatory  hellos.  it'd  been  a  good  amount  of  time  since  he'd  seen  some  of  these  friends,  a  bright  smile  quickly  accompanying  each  ‘it's  been  so  long!'  shared.  with  a  drink  in  his  hand.  all  familiar  faces  surrounded  the  room.  it  was  a  recipe  for  a  good  night,  something  to  bring  him  back  to  reality  of  what  this  was  all  really  for  –  that  was  until  the  universe  had  other  plans  for  him.  it  always  did.  the  faint  “catherine?!”  he'd  heard  in  the  distance  was  enough  to  pull  his  attention  away  from  the  current  conversation  to  where  the  sound  came  from.  his  neck  snapped.  there  was  no  way.  sure  enough,  he  saw  her  –  radiant  as  ever.  a  light  only  she  seemed  to  have  around  her.  it  was  like  he  was  seeing  a  ghost,  and  to  him,  he  truly  was;  she  had  become  one  so  long  ago.  something  he  had  to  let  go  of  and  keep  alive  in  his  memories.  it  wasn't  like  it  was  her  fault.  he  would  never  blame  her  for  what  happened  to  her.  yet,  it  was  hard  to  deny  the  way  his  lungs  made  it  hard  to  breathe  when  she  had  left.  how  he  couldn't  sleep  the  same  without  her  next  to  him;  how  it  began  his  addiction  to  caffeine.  the  party  wasn't  small,  but  it  wasn't  big  enough  that  they  wouldn't  cross  paths.  she  looked  the  same,  like  she  hadn't  left  his  mind,  like  it  hadn't  been  years,  and  her  energy  lit  the  room  around  them.  he  kept  his  cool  exterior  when  she  approached,  a  beauty  and  a  vision  all  packaged  into  one.  “you  always  did  have  some  nerve,  one  of  the  things  i  really  liked  about  you.”  ares  smiled,  the  charm  peeking  through,  a  light  chuckle  escaping.  “never  thought  i'd  see  your  face  in  this  city  again.  beautiful  as  ever,”  he  took  a  sip  from  the  drink  in  his  hand,  leaning  against  the  wall  behind  him.  “what  do  we  owe  the  pleasure,  catherine?  it's  kind  of  hard  to  believe  i'm  really  looking  at  you  right  now.”

IT'S ODD TO WAKE UP next to someone yet feel so alone, and still natalya will choose the illusion over reality every time. at least it is a warm body, an arm carelessly thrown over her waist in the early morning hours, a chest to rock her to sleep. she should've called this off weeks ago, when the inevitable feelings had roared so loudly they were no longer possible to ignore, but even then she'd insisted on this. insisted it did not hurt the nights he did not want her, when she wants him all the time. he wakes as she gets dressed, her neck craning to watch him yawn, sleepy gaze settling on her. damn that heart in her chest. « good morning, » she greets softly. « it's early, just go back to sleep. i'm gonna steal a bagel and then i'll be out of your hair. »

it  was  a  strange  feeling  --  teetering  between  true  adoration  for  the  woman  beside  him  and  an  unwavering  wall  over  his  true  feelings.  it  wasn't  easy  to  be  vulnerable  and  honest.  he  thought  it  was  too  damaging  half  the  time  rather  than  being  worth  the  end  result.  so,  he  did  this.  flings  that  he  knew  his  promises  would  falter  in.  logan  convinced  himself  it  was  better  this  way.  no  one  really  got  hurt,  and  most  of  all,  he  didn't.  opening  his  eyes,  he  knew  how  lucky  he  was  to  see  someone  as  beautiful  as  natalya  standing  in  his  room.  with  a  stretch  of  his  arms  he  calls  her  over,  grunt  leaving  his  throat  when  he  realized  she  was  dressing  for  work.  “good  morning,”  he  greeted,  bringing  her  into  his  embrace  to  place  a  kiss  to  her  temple.  “you  should  call  off,”  logan  suggested,  arm  shifting  to  move  around  her  waist.  “it's  better  when  you're  here  all  day.”  he  admitted,  the  tiredness  keeping  some  of  the  bricks  of  his  feelings  for  her  exposed  and  open.  blinking  at  her  through  his  tired  gaze,  hand  absentmindedly  rubbing  at  her  side,  logan  knew  this  would  be  on  to  throw  her  for  a  loop. 

due to their naturally authentic, blunt personality, halle was completely incapable of playing it cool. any attempt at playing doing so felt was corny and so beyond out of character for them. they were simply over the moon to see the woman after what felt like eons, and had no desire to hide that or seem indifferent. what was the point of pretending they didn't care when their heart nearly leaped out of their chest every single time they linked up? “yeah, yeah,” they respond, dimples popping as they grin ear to ear. halle raises an eyebrow as billie explains herself, truly caught off guard they were trusted with something that felt so intimate. “prince charming approved this?” they're partly testing the boundaries, partly seeing if those two are even still together. last halle heard (from a friend of a friend of a cousin), everything was peachy keen in the land of barbie and ken. then again, their friend was stoned out of their mind half the time, so halle could only take her so seriously. “well, i'm about to head out in ten minutes or so. my last client was an hour ago and i'm honestly so exhausted. kenna can run the shop by herself. should have called to make an appointment, miss billie.” a pause as an idea comes to mind. “i was gonna head to main street for lunch. wanna come with?

all  it  took  was  that  famous  grin  from  the  other  for  billie  to  shamelessly  sport  one  herself.  the  smile  halle  had  was  contagious,  their  energy  enough  to  light  the  room  up  around  them.  she  was  saddened  that  they  hadn't  spent  as  much  time  together  recently  as  they  should  have.  maybe  this  would  be  the  beginning  of  a  new  era  for  them  and  their  friendship.  her  grin  turned  more  smug  at  the  raise  of  halle's  brow,  shrugging  her  shoulders,  “i  don't  need  his  approval  for  everything,”  she  said  casually,  letting  the  implications  be  as  they  were.  they  were  together  still  –  for  now.  billie  had  a  timeframe  of  when  her  boyfriend  would  need  to  fix  things  by,  but  in  reality,  she  had  mentally  checked  out  of  it  a  long  time  ago.  she  was  over  the  antics,  something  she  didn't  let  many  hear  about  half  the  time.  “damn,  i'll  make  one  for  next  time  then.  yeah?”  she  said,  that  grin  still  on  her  lips,  “i  forgot  you're  too  busy  for  me  now.”  a  playful  tease,  her  tone  light.  billie  nodded  at  the  question,  “yeah  i'd  love  that.  lead  the  way?”  she  waited  patiently  for  halle,  waved  a  quick  goodbye  to  kenna,  and  tried  to  dim  the  excitement  she  had  to  go  with  halle,  yet  she  knew  she  failed.  once  they  were  out  of  the  shop  and  making  their  way  towards  main  street,  billie  nudged  halle's  arm  with  her  elbow.  “what  else  have  you  been  up  to?  the  shop  looks  great.  i  can't  go  that  long  without  seeing  it  again…  i  feel  like  i've  missed  so  much.”
