When I was in high school, my mom liked to borrow old movies from the library. These were in the VHS days of the early 90’s, pre-internet, pre-TCM, so this became my introduction to classic movies. We mostly borrowed Fred and Ginger musicals, but at one point I watched some Chaplin films and immediately became a fan. One of my favorites was Modern Times, which still holds up today. The scenes I remember most are the eating machine and when he’s unable to stop doing the wrenching movements even after he walks away from the assembly line. New book alert: “Inventing the It Girl: How Elinor Glyn Created the Modern Romance and Conquered Early Hollywood” by Hilary A. Hallett Anyone else reading this? Not only is it a fascinating look at a relatively unknown but very culturally influential woman of the early last century, but it gives a lot of great background information on the history of the times she lived in. Silent Film actor Emerson Romero, who went by the stage name Tommy Albert, was also deaf. When the talkies took over, there was little work for deaf actors, and he left the industry. The Lumière brothers, as they are commonly known, were photographic equipment manufacturers who invented the groundbreaking Cinématographe, the first camera that could project a moving image for an audience, in 1895.
