Zendaya | The Odyssey | New York Premiere ♡
I’d love an au with a Jon where Ned actually gets to explain the situation with Lyanna to him like I NEED THE EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER
“You mean ‘less important’,” Hades remarked with a roll of his eyes. Styx was really trying to wind him up, wasn’t she? But what for? This seemed to be far from simple banter. Almost like she actually hated the god.
“Look, Styx – I appreciate your…sacrifice.” His words were drooling with sarcasm. “But you aren’t as needed as you would like to make it. People crossing your river has just established over the centuries, and maybe…maybe it’s a bit outdated. Admit it.” Hades stepped closer, but still kept a fair distance to both her hands and that spider making its way over her arm. “You like being wanted. And I don’t mean sexually, because I really can’t see anyone being in for you…” That side-remark just had to be. “I don’t need your so-called touch of greatness; I quite enjoy being left alone by all your precious Olympians.”
Head titled to the side at the challenge. Because that's what she deemed it to be; a challenge. Born from arrogance and a fake sense of reality. She leaned in, dark eyes widening slightly as her voice became a dangerous hush. "You seem to forget that I am not an Olympian. I have been here way before you. And if you can find another way to serve your domain, and King, then you go find it. Passage closed."
She flicked her wrist, one could hear the sharp crack, and sharp stones emerged from the river. It created a blockage; low enough for water to triple over, but high enough for no ferry to pass.
Slender fingers reached up to take de widow off her shoulder. "And if you break your promise to the souls waiting at the gates, I will come for your head. A win for me in any way."
Styx saw parts of herself in her children, as all mothers did. Out of all of her children though, she saw the most of herself in Zelos. He had her cold fire, that burned like ice against the heart, and he had some of her pride and strength. He, the first born, was the one who needed the most instruction from her because she knew where his path could lead. He received more of her attention than perhaps he realised, because it was not always positive. His position in the cosmos would not come close to satisfying him. She did not possess a gift of prophecy and yet, when she fixed him with a deep, intense stare that would have stripped a man down to his very bones, she could perceive something warm and yet dark, like lightning arcing across a deep, purple sky.
"Fairness is irrelevant and your complaints are ineffectual. What matters is survival and once you have mastered that ability, then you can contemplate thriving." As she spoke, she leaned in closer to him, her hand reaching out and her fingers gripping firmly around his wrist.
Zelos did not pull away. His mother's grip was iron beneath cool skin, steady enough to remind him that she could have broken the wrist she now merely held. His jaw tightened instead, dark eyes refusing to leave hers. It would have been easier, or safer, to bow his head as his siblings did, to swallow the bitterness and call it obedience. But yielding had always tasted like defeat, and defeat was something that curdled in his stomach until it became anger.
"And who decides what survival demands?" he asked, his voice quieter now, though no less sharp. "You?" A humorless smile ghosted across his lips. "You tell me fairness is irrelevant, yet you expect me to believe your judgments are untouched by preference." His gaze flickered briefly toward the place where Nike had disappeared before settling back on Styx. "If I am to endure this world, then teach me how to become stronger than my sister. Not how to be content standing behind her."
His wrist shifted within her grasp, not to escape but to test the strength of the hold, as though measuring the distance between son and mother in something more tangible than words. "You mistake my questions for weakness," Zelos continued. "They are not. I do not fear hardship. I fear becoming the sort of god who accepts whatever place he is given because someone older told him it was enough." The fire behind his eyes hardened into quiet resolve. "If that disgraces this family, then perhaps this family asks too little of itself."

It had been hard adjusting to the North but now she found great peace in it. The soft snowfall had something calming about it, and Catelyn found that every now and then she could spend an hour or two just watching it in the morning. This morning, however, she found the bed empty and decided to look for her husband. Wrapped up in her warmest clothes – she would never quite get used to the cold of the morning – she searched the few places he could have been visiting in the morning. The Godswood was where she finally found him. With a soft smile, she approached him quietly. Only when he seemed to notice her did she speak. “Some might think it rude to have your wife wake on her own. Did you have trouble sleeping, my love?”
@takenamiss asked for cat and ned
He turned at the sound of her voice, the corner of his mouth lifting into the faint smile reserved for few others. Frost clung to the branches of the ancient weirwood; its red leaves unmoving in the still morning air, while fresh snow softened the ground beneath his boots. "The dawn came before sleep cared to," he admitted, his breath curling into the cold between them. There were mornings when Winterfell wakes before he did, and others when he'd been awake long before the castle. Ned reached for her gloved hand, rubbing his thumb gently across her fingers to warm them. "I did not mean to leave you to an empty bed."
His gaze drifted briefly toward the pale face of the heart tree before returning to hers. The burdens of lordship had a habit of following him even into the quiet places, where only the old gods bore witness. Yet Catelyn's presence had a way of easing weights he seldom spoke aloud. "You have never taken kindly to the morning cold," he said with a touch of amusement. "And still you came looking for me." The smile lingered a moment longer, softer now. "Come. If I have earned your displeasure, allow me to repay it by walking back to the keep with you before the children awake and demand every moment of our day."

He did not rise at once. Instead, Tywin remained seated behind the heavy desk as though his son's insolence had not earned so much as a twitch of irritation. Only his eyes moved, following Tyrion with the measured patience of a lion watching prey convince itself it had reached safety. The gust of air from the open door stirred the parchment upon his desk. Nothing else in the room dared move.
At last, he stood. The scrape of his chair against the stone floor was deliberate, the sound filling the space between them. "You imagine yourself beyond my reach because you have survived long enough to grow comfortable with your own tongue." His voice was level enough to chill the chamber more effectively than a shout ever could. Hands came together behind his back as he approached, each step unhurried and certain. "A dangerous habit. Men have lost kingdoms for less than the arrogance you display before your own father."
His gaze settled upon the volume tucked beneath Tyrion's arm, lingering there for only a heartbeat before returning to his son's face.
"Walk through that door if you wish. You will discover that every hall in this castle, every servant who lowers his eyes, every guard who bars a passage, every raven that leaves these walls answers to me before it answers to you." His mouth flattened into something that was not quite a smile. "You mistake possession for ownership. You have the book. I have Casterly Rock. Consider which of us is truly negotiating."

Eddard lingered in the doorway for a moment. Jon looked exhausted, though he held himself with the same quiet resolve that had always reminded him of another face. The sight stirred an old ache that never truly left him.
"No," he said simply, the corners of his mouth softening into the ghost of a smile. "Your lady did not." He rested a hand upon the pommel of a nearby practice sword. "I have lived long enough under this roof to know when one of my children is absent from his bed without needing to be told." Eyes settled and in the short silence that followed, a brow rose in something like amusement. "Or perhaps I have been your age myself."
Ned knew of his wife's displeasure towards the boy. She found missteps in everything he did and was sure to show her disdain. Couldn't hide it, more likely. Things would be easier if he could simply tell Cat the truth, but the risk was too grand and his promise meant more to him than keeping domestic peace.
"Is there something you seek distraction from?"
@ofbleedingpages asked:
are you happy now? [ for eddard, from cersei ]
He had heard anger before. It wore many faces; Robert's thunder, Brandon's wildfire, Lyanna's sharp defiance. Cersei's came wrapped in silk, every word measured to cut where a blade could not.
Honor had always seemed a simple road at Winterfell. Snow fell, seasons turned, justice was rendered with the same hand that held the sword. In the south, honor twisted upon itself until right and ruin shared the same face. He had warned her. Given her the chance to flee with the children before Robert returned. Perhaps that had been weakness. Perhaps mercy. He no longer knew which was which. The gods seldom rewarded either. They simply watched as men convinced themselves they had chosen wisely before revealing how little choice had ever existed.
Ned looked upon the queen and found no triumph within himself. Only pity, though he knew she would spit upon such a thing if she recognized it in his eyes.
The question lingered long after her voice had fallen away. He did not answer. Happiness had abandoned him years ago upon a blood-soaked floor in King's Landing, beside the broken bodies of children he had been too late to save. Whatever satisfaction truth was meant to bring had long since soured into something heavier, colder. There was only duty, and the price it demanded.
"No," he thought at last, though the word never crossed his lips. He was not happy. Not for Robert, whose heart would shatter beneath the truth. Not for the innocent children caught between the sins of their parents. Not for the realm poised upon the edge of another war. Least of all for himself. He uncovered the truth because he believed the truth ought to matter.
“Why is Nike getting to go first?!” he whined exaggeratedly, head falling back in frustration. “She always gets all the advantages and it’s just unfair!”
@takenamiss
Styx threw her son a look that he would be more than familiar with; a harsh look that could freeze a god in their tracks and make them reconsider their life choices. It was a look that stripped even the most confident down to their basic, core self.
"Nike is going first because she, unlike you, does not complain at every minor inconvenience that comes her way." Styx's voice was cold, colder even than the waters of her river. This was not a dignified way to act and it was not appropriate and she would not look upon such behaviour favourably. He should know better. She had taught him better than that and yet he seemed either incapable of listening or refused on principle to be anything other than petulant.
"Do not disgrace yourself or this family any further."
He knew that look all too well. It brought a shiver down his spine. And where his siblings would step in line — where others would step in line — he would only feel more defiant. It boiled in his chest. Angry and explosive.
It had often led to heavier consequences than simply listening and accepting. Being disciplined like both his parents would’ve preferred. Like how Nike and Bia and Kratos could be disciplined. But he couldn’t be stopped in his response. Similar to how a volcano can’t be stopped erupting.
So he dared to offer her a similar look of displeasure. Nostrils flaring in disdain. “It does not favor you to favor one child over another, mother. Perhaps I complain because it is unfair!”
@takenamiss asked: “You chose a life that didn’t have room for me in it.” (Helios to Epi)
"I made the best out of a situation I was pushed into," Epimetheus explained. Sometimes it was difficult to understand Helios. He would downplay their relationship, shy away from anything too deep, only to return around and make accusations like these. "I chose to be loyal to my wife. To love her. It's what she deserved." It had not changed anything about his feelings for the Sun god. Feeling he hadn't understood for a long time. Love for Pandora had made it obvious that it was the same he felt for Helios.
He was tempted to throw accusations back at Helios. But they had danced this dance before. Been through the same argument. And it had always ended with hurt. Epimetheus didn't have his brother's foresight, but he could learn from mistakes. "I didn't know it would hurt you." He pressed his lips into a thin line, scratched his bread nervously. "And, honestly, I didn't know it was possible to love two people the way I love the two of you." He was still unsure if it could be done without breaking at least one of their hearts. "There's always room for you in my life, Helios." There was a pleading look in Epimetheus deep brown eyes. Hope that Helios still wanted to room.
Never in his existence did he have a conversation such as this one. Courses usually ran differently; there would be a counterargument that would lead to an eventual escalation. Or he wouldn’t even bother with such dramatics and simply make an exit. The latter being the most usual occurrence, with Epimetheus being the main exception. How to respond suddenly became a delicate thing. Were he continue with his accusations, he would seem immature. Were he to exit, he would seem dismissing. A laugh or smile would come across as sarcastic. Would he continue to show any type of disappointment, he’d seem petty. And tears — of joy or sadness — well.. pathetic.
His face was stoic instead as he pondered his options. Gaze slightly down-casted and seemingly far away.
The love Helios was used to had been of a fleeting nature. One that swells big and sudden and then usually ebbs away after making big proclamations. He fell for it often. Didn’t learn from his mistakes. Felt like this time would be different, only for it to turn our that it was not. But not with Epi. He came back. And back. And back again. Even when he felt rejected or send away. He came back — with accusations of mistreatment, but a return nonetheless. It was stupid and annoying and the only thing that always seemed right.
He was silent for what seemed longer than necessary. Then, with a subtle movement, golden eyes became present as they found the other. And even when he didn’t intend to do so — because it could come across as all wrong — he couldn’t help but smile. A boyish one that made his eyes sparkle. Not with mischief, but with something else entirely. A snicker followed, head falling back just slightly. “That must feel entirely frustrating.” A laugh, soft and warm. “I told you it would happen. In the beginning. When you deemed me intolerable.” Lips pressed together to contain the sudden urge of excitement and he managed something leaning towards serious once more. “I would like to reclaim that space, yes.”
