From our treatment (TX) room you can see out to the road where people usually park to come into the clinic. I glanced out the window today just in time to see a boy jumping out of the car with a cat wrapped in a towel flopping lifelessly around in his arms as he ran.
Oh man.
Newcastle has had a bad bout of weather the last few days and a lot of animals have been affected by it. This cat was found in a gutter, and brought straight to the clinic. Once on the table my first realisation was just how cold he was. He was lifelessly cold and his gums were a stark white colour. I thought he would be dead within minutes. I made up a fluid line and watched over the Vet working her magic trying to find out what had happened to the poor thing. We put him straight on oxygen and successfully took a tiny amount of blood.
He was really wet and covered in faeces so i took the job of cleaning him up before his emotional owners arrived. He wasn't moving his back legs and his tail was limp, he also had a few minor flesh wounds on his feet and back legs. That was a very bad sign, suggested that he may have done damage to his spine.
We tried to warm him up as much as possible, with two hot water bottles, a bit sheet of bubble wrap (to act as insulation, a heat mat and a few towels. He was so cold the thermometer wasn't reading it was just beeping with a LOªC message.
After a short while he finally started showing a reading on the thermometer, and even a slight movement in the end of his tail (every person in the room cheered) and seemed to become a lot more alert.
He will stay overnight and get radiographs tomorrow to see if there is any spinal damage or if his pelvis is broken. Hopefully they wont have to amputate his tail.
Ill update this when i find out what the prognosis is.
It is vital to remember that the balance of minerals in the diet is as important as the quantity since the interactions between the minerals can also cause problems if there is an excess of one mineral relative to another. For example, if the calcium to phosphorous ratio is not correct, the animal will develop bone problems.
The calcium to phosphorus (Ca:P) ratio should be 1-1.5:1
pure meat diets have adverse Ca:P ratio of 1:20 – this is why a pure meat diet fed to a dog or cat will result in significant bone problems.
Cats cannot be vegan. An essential Amino Acid called Taurine is a vital component in aiding cats in digestion, as well as stopping retinal degeneration - this is only found in animal protein. There are synthesised Taurine being used in the human market (which can be found in some energy drinks, instead of bull pee) but it can’t be be used in cat food (i haven’t found out why yet).

This is the image of the Bull Terrier with the soft tissue tumour. This dog was sadly euthanised but in a lot of pain. When looking with human eyes it just looked like a pus filled hole in the back of the upper jaw and the smell was awful.
Today I finally cried at the vets. There was a Bull Terrier (an animal which I feel pretty attached to I think because of how cruel people can be towards their breed) who I had bro’d down with throughout the day. It got to 3 o’clock and we finally anaesthetised her to look at her face which was pretty swollen.
As soon as we opened her mouth to intubate her, you could see a large pus filled hole in her upper jaw right down the back.
The vet said it was the worst she’s seen and that euthanasia would be the only option. The hole was due to a large cancerous soft tissue tumour that would keep destroying the tissue/bone in her face.
After speaking to the owners they decided not to bring her out of the anaesthetic and to monitor her until the owners arrived.
Unfortunately I had to start my other job so I was unable to stay and say goodbye and that’s what ruined me. I’m usually pretty stable when it comes to being around animals dying. It sounds really lame, but you know how dogs can sense things like when someone is going to have a seizure, when you’re leaving the house etc, well I like to think they can sense how much l love them, and how appreciative i am to spend their final moments with them. My heart is so full it could burst in those moments. That’s what gives me comfort, and to not have that final moment sucked.

Today we had a cat come into the clinic that had obviously been in a fight and as a result had developed a facial abscess that needed to be drained, then continued to be drained by the little flexible tube sutured into place. The fact that the tube will be taken out after 4-5 days without sedation is insane.
That’s a light bulb. Inside a golden retriever. The dog is fine. Just one of the X-rays in this awesome collection (all with happy endings). :D
