if you do a little more to light your scene, then it can help you with visualizing lighting as well. This isn't 'cheating', it's utilizing tools and recourses to benefit your art process. This goes for photos and video reference as well. Learning 3D IS a learning curve but even simple forms can help. You can download FREE to use assets or support creators who make them(I bought the Cuda) to help build a scene. You can also use photographs as planes and set up scenes, and the Grease Pencil in Blender allows you to draw in 3D space.

I'll say it again - this movie / book has changed my brain chemistry. Completely.

I'm still trying to learn how to draw this man but mmmmmm. MMMMMM. I'm loving this.

Last one was my first experiment with markers, they're cheap and I hate them but they got the job done enough. Edited in CSP to make the colours closer to the way they're on paper, my scanner can't handle colour well.
