Hey, I'm building a Zubera deck, and let's say my friend swings with his 10/8 eldrazi, and I block with 5 zubera. Do they all go to the graveyard at once? Or is there some sort of order for it? What if he swings with five 2/2?
The number of Zubera that died this turn is determined when the triggered ability resolves, not when it goes on the stack. (Even then, creatures that die simultaneously all see each other dying.)
Let’s say that you have five Floating-Dream Zuberas in the situation you describe above. When state-based actions are checked after combat damage is dealt, all five Zuberas have lethal damage marked on them and are destroyed. Each one’s death trigger then triggers. When each trigger resolves, the game sees that five Zubera have died this turn and so you’ll draw five cards for each trigger.
No secret can be hidden from kami wiretapping.
Shirei, Zubera Caretaker
4x Dripping-Tongue Zubera 4x Floating-Dream Zubera 3x Ashen-Skin Zubera
4x Thief of Hope 3x Shirei, Shizo’s Caretaker
4x Hana Kami 4x Plagued Rusalka
3x Eerie Procession 1x Evermind
1x Death Denied 1x Soulless Revival
2x Rend Flesh 1x Hideous Laughter
1x Devouring Greed
4x Opulent Palace 4x Evolving Wilds 1x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
1x Shizo, Death’s Storehouse 1x Okina, Temple to the Grandfathers
2x Forest 3x Island 8x Swamp
How the hell do you pronounce Zubera?
Kamigawa block is extremely polarizing.
(I will use any excuse to post Sickening Shoal.)
It seems like most people tend to hate it because it doesn't interact well with the rest of the game and the reward for making it work is actually less than just messing with some other sets.
Others love it. It presents a deckbuilding challenge! And the art and aesthetics are some of the coolest ever.
One of my favorite activities is trying to figure out how to make Kamigawa shit work in casual decks. And one of the most interesting set of creatures you can find are... The Zubera.
There are two kinds of Zubera. The common and the uncommon kind.
The common Zubera all have one thing in common (Badum-TISH!). When they die, something triggers. It's better to just let the cards explain...
When each Zubera dies, they do something specific. They do something within their color that gets multiplied by the number that's out.
Silent-Chant Zubera's the most boring one. It just gains you two life for each dying Zubera. But say you manage to have four Zubera out and they all die simultaneously. You'd gain 8 life as the first one triggers, 8 life as the second triggers, 8 life as the third one triggers, then 8 life as the fourth does. 32 life is quite a bit. And this is coming from the shittiest Zubera!
I'd have trouble justifying running Silent-Chant Zubera even in a Zubera deck. They're real slow so the extra help staying alive may be good but... It doesn't really DO anything. You'll be slightly harder to kill... Which is not very because you're running a Zubera deck.
Draw a card for each Zubera? That's what I'm talkin' about! This is helpful!
Basically, this will destroy the opponent's hand. Pretty helpful against control or any slow deck!
Plus he's real creepy looking.
Ember-Fist is the one that'll bring some pain!
But unfortunately... It's just one damage per Zubera so it won't do quite as much as you think. It's like... After Mirrodin block they were REALLY scared to make anything good. But this is on the higher end of Zubera.
Ew...
Effective, though! After a board-wipe you'll still have some creatures! Sure, they're 1/1s but if it cleared a lot of Zubera, that CAN be a lot. One of the better Zubera out there.
Also there are the Uncommon Zubera in Blue and Red that don't really do the same thing at all.
Saviours brings us more Zubera but with an interesting twist. They're bigger creatures that need to be killed exactly or you get a pretty big boon. Now if you just make the Zubera's Toughness slightly higher... Dying by combat damage guarantees its effect! And drawing three cards can be killer!
Doing four damage...? Not so much.
Now... You may be asking yourself... Is there stuff to make these guys work?
Shirei! This guy allows you to REUSE your Zubera!
He's not exactly cheap but... He's basically what'll make stuff happen.
Also he's just begging to have an EDH deck built around him. Endlessly recurring 1/1s all day errday.
A classic. Works well with Floating Dream Zubera because you'll have some special mana to cast all your super special new cards with!
It'd be better if it didn't cost anything but what can ya do? It's a free artifact!
Devouring Greed is your bomb. You have additional effects as you sac these guys. It's beautiful!
Say you sac... 2 Floating Dream, 1 Ember-Fist, 1 Silent-Chant and 1 Dripping Tongue. Devouring Greed will make the opponent lose 12 life, you gain 12 life, then you draw five cards, draw five more, do five damage to target creature or player, gain 10 life and then get five 1/1 Spirit Creature tokens.
And that's what being Zubera is all about!
I'm sure there are some other ways out there but I'm just giving out a sample.
No, a Zubera deck won't win you anything. The romance of it is much more awesome than the reality... BUT... A Zubera deck is SUPER budget and can bring a lot of fun to a multiplayer game. People will leave you alone because you're laying Zubera then BOOM! You obliterate somebody and you suddenly have an army of spirits as Shirei brings them back... Ready to Devour again!
Jank is fun. If you're not trying new things in Magic, then you're not really playing the game. Instead of just optimizing your Caw-Blade or whatever's currently hot... Why not look at something old and unused and try to break it yourself? And even if you don't end up with something competitive... At least you tried something different.
