Research No. 2 // ZPark
Known as China's "National Software Export Base," Zpark is one of our six primary research sites around Beijing.  We are looking at this development as it is indicative of the global economic development that the country is perpetuating through its land clearance policies.  Most interestingly, the site's single land use has spurred the growth of several areas with urban village characteristics around the park itself. ZPark's economic role has been chronicled by Business Week previously here.
We stumbled upon a group of Chinese Tech workers playing Tug of War within the software park. Â After talking to a Canadian intern, we found out it was part of his firm's intra-company tournament. Â The chanting was unintelligible, but the competition was no less exciting.
While visiting Zpark, I was caught admiring a "yi jiao" -- a 10 cent bill -- outside a local convenience store, at which point we gained some friends who then wanted to see our money. Luckily, Leland had some on hand and was able to show them a US dollar bill. Â It was clear that they had never seen one before this interaction. As a result, one the girls wanted to keep a couple pieces of the US tender for herself. They somehow knew the exchange rate and offered Lee 6 yuans for each of his dollar bills.
