One more Flash 2x18 post (blind speculation)
I’ve seen a few twin/alternate theories spring up in the wake of Versus Zoom to explain the prisoner in the mask, and I’d personally be unsurprised if that was how the writers ha originally planned to go (on top of being a simple explanation for a show that’s already introduced alternate selves, the Man in the Iron Mask reference is clearly signaling it). In the aftermath of 2x18 though, where Zoom/Hunter’s father, James, is introduced, I think it’s more likely that the plot has evolved to a point where it’s going to be James in the mask. ‘Why is he in a mask if he’s not Jay?’ could have an answer as simple as it being revenge for the time Hunter himself was masked/muzzled and under ground.
I’d guess that Hunter’s father was a speedster too, and that the difference between past!Hunter (”Jay”) and present!Hunter (”Zoom”) is that during the period of being speedless and dying (I don’t think it’s possible for his loss of speed to have been a lie, given Caitlin’s tests), versus having regained his speed, he would have captured and drained his father in the same way he’s done to Barry to temporarily stabilize his condition. I feel that also answers the question of how he knew draining speed was actually possible, if Jay wasn’t a real person to test it on, in the first place. (How’d his speed loss/degeneration set in, to begin with? My guess would be that Velocity 5 was--as we were already told--created to help ‘Jay’ defeat ‘Zoom,’ and then just burned him out. If he’s living a double life as both the hero and the villain, it’s easy for him to excuse his failures to catch himself through ‘he’s faster than me,’ until a way to become faster reveals itself)
