The morning started like any other: wake up, get dressed, make sure Danny got up for school. It all fell apart when Jack's hand went through his son's apparently not-so-solid body.

I participated in this years Invisobang event partnered with the lovely ZombieRed! I joined hoping to get to know some of the other phans in the phandom, and I came out with some great friends~<3 Thank you to the lovely mods @invisobang for organizing this event! Its been a blast!! :D

Danny whimpered and buried his face further into his dad’s torso but slowly melted into the sensation of a large hand carding through his hair. It was so comforting and all Danny wanted was to be comforted by his dad.

Wait.

The body underneath Danny was gently rising and falling. Danny’s head snapped up. His dad was breathing slowly through his mouth; wide open to inhale and pursed with the exhale. His eyes were closed and his brow was furrowed.

He was alive. He was  alive.

Danny squeezed his arms around his dad with a quivering lip. His head was starting to hurt from crying so much.

“Dad! Dad, I’m so glad you’re alive oh my god I’m so sorry I’m so sorry and I love you and I’m an awful son you’re my  dad  and you’re  alive  oh my god!”

Jack gently rubbed his thumb against the side of Danny’s face beside his ear. “Shh...it’s okay son. I’m right here.”

Danny let himself fall into the comfort that his dad was giving him. It was so warm and inviting. His sobs began to slow and the nauseous feeling in the pit of his stomach faded. He felt Jack shift underneath him and give a small gasp. Danny looked up and saw a strange expression on his dad’s face.

“Of course. You...all along. How did I never see it?” Jack said.

Jack frowned. He felt...conflicted. He didn’t want Danny to fade away, to disappear for good. It was too permanent. It would be proof that he was…that Danny was, well…Jack kept that mental box shut. He wasn’t going there. He didn’t need to right now, he told himself. However, he knew, he really did honestly know that he couldn’t be selfish. That wanting Danny to stay as a ghost was wrong.

A ghost was but an ectoplasmic echo of the person they once were, preventing that person from fully passing on. He wanted Danny to be able to be at peace. It was the right thing to want—the right thing to do. He and Maddie had even discussed this more than once. It was better to let go than to cling on to a memory of something that once was and watch it morph into a monster, ruled by obsession and losing its humanity.

That didn’t make it any easier.

Jack groaned and placed his head in his hands. What was he supposed to do?

Jack was knocked backwards by what he had heard. Or perhaps he was knocked over by the rough waves that had suddenly appeared.

Or maybe it was the giant ghost fish that had leapt out from the water, undoubtedly drawn by Danny's energy.

The trio made their way down the stairs to the lab. There was some old dried ectoplasm on the floor in spots and various parts scattered around. The garbage bin beside his dad’s work station was overflowing. On top of Jack’s workstation were various notebooks, textbooks, printed out papers, and a map that sat on top of his large computer monitor. Things seemed to really get out of hand quickly when his mom wasn’t around to tidy.

It probably didn’t help that Danny often didn’t clean the lab, either, despite it being one of his chores.

His dad was smiling when he looked up from his mess of assorted papers.

“Perfect timing, Danny-boy! I just finished up with planning,” he said. Danny frowned.

“Planning what, exactly?”

“A fishing trip for us,” he said, as if it were the most obvious conclusion. It was not the most obvious conclusion. Danny tilted his head in confusion.

“When?”

“Why, tomorrow, of course!” Jack exclaimed.

Jack practically threw the dishes into the GAV’s sink. No, the entire point of their trip was for Danny to no longer be a stranger. To get to know him and maybe even  begin  to understand him. A sense of calm immediately washed over Jack; he immediately felt better having a plan, flimsy as it may be. He walked over to where his son was lying on the grass, facing the stars. Danny had headphones on—Jack could hear muffled bass bleeding from them. The large man gingerly sat down on the grass beside Danny and lay down beside him.

Danny didn’t move an inch and kept his gaze firmly fixed at the night sky. Jack gave a sigh and also looked up at the cosmos. He was struck by the immense amount of stars.

“Wow. That really is something, huh?” Jack said.

Danny didn’t say a word. Jack nudged the teen’s side with his elbow. He only got a grunt in response. Again, Jack nudged Danny.

Danny took off his headphone and just stared at his father.

“That up there,” Jack said, pointing at the sky, “what’s it called? ‘The Big Scoop?’”

The reply was only a groan but Jack could hear Danny fighting against a smile. He was certain this would work.

“It’s nice how warm it is,” his dad said, mirroring Danny’s thoughts. He was staring at the water, pushed by the wind.

“It is,” Danny agreed.

“Especially compared to the weather at home.”

“Yeah. You could even say that it’s hot out.”

“And if it’s hot out,” Jack said, turning to Danny with a wide grin, “well. That’s perfect for swimming.”

Danny matched his dad’s smile. He tentatively began to get up, keeping his hands firmly on the wood picnic bench in anticipation. His dad matched the movement and the two stayed like that for a few beats. Then his dad pushed off of the table and began to sprint to the shore.

“That’s cheating!” Danny yelled, failing to hold back his laughter. The teen and his father stripped down to their boxers and sprinted into the water.
