I ended up watching a short about Gintama's Final Ending scam, and it talked about its connection to the tv show ZIP!.
ZIP! was my go-to when it came to morning TV, so I was happily surprised. (I would have been happily surprised sooner if I would just read the manga already.)
- Chapter 698.
When Gintama announced that it would be ending in 5 chapters, ZIP! did what news magazine programs do and reported on it. Main presenter Taichi Masu was shocked by the news.
A month later, when Gintama, in fact, did not end, ZIP! reported that as well. Especially since they were name-checked in the manga itself. Masu said he was happy that the manga is continuing, even if he's sorry that he made Katsura curse him out.
This scene is animated and voiced for the surprise video at Jump Festa, which ends with the line: "Sending it out to all the Masu-announcers". (To which Gintoki screams, "There's only one Masu! Send it out to all our readers!!") (The video also uses the wrong character for Mr. Masu's name as a little extra gag on top of the shout-out.)
Finally, when Gintama did finally end, there is one last shout-out posted on the official website: Gintoki has written a thank you note to Z*P's Masu-announcer. "You made him report a complete lie! You think this makes it right!!"
Mr. Masu looks pleased, so maybe it's fine.
