hello bridget ! first of all amazing work you have there ! i wanted to ask about your process for those great light studies you´re doing lately, do you take some shots or are you painting them by memory ? i was also wondering what kind of animation work are you doing for Microsoft and how is it to work for the gam e industry ? i´m very curious ! (being an animation student and all) thanks :)
Hey! So the lighting studies are all from memory - mostly stuff I spot when I'm out running. That always provides a nice chance to just stop and analyze what I'm seeing for a bit, and try and recreate it later. I find it helps me be more thoughtful and purposeful... Usually I'm lazy and just go right from reference for lighting, so it's a good way to push myself :P
Working in the game industry has been really interesting! I've worked on a couple projects this year, one of my favorites being Project Spark. Since it's an imaginative and cartoony game, I was able to do some really fun character animation stuff there. The one thing that's been a bit tough is that game animation is much more technical. The upside of that is collaborating with game designers, the downside being the more fragmented nature of the animation itself, as you have to tune lots of smaller animations to feel good as they blend together in gameplay. Very different kettle of fish than sitting down to work on a single acting shot for a few weeks.
Thanks so much for writing, I hope this helps!
