on that big post i made earlier about zero. in the newest show theres a massive scene where he specificslly withholds telling his mom about his issues because hes frightened of disappointing her and he feels ungrateful because hes been depressed and scared of living his entire life when she was loving and supportive from moment one. and its a really painful and harrowing scene the way he makes himself not say anything and it genuinely made me cry. and then i had to step back and think. His mom is gonna watch this. like she just is gonna watch it. how do you represent yourself not sharing that and then have to keep going without having shared it. is it easier to share it indirectly and also to the whole world. do you call her up like nothing happened afterwards. what.
she didn't say what but i knew what she meant. that feeling that keeps coming back to ruin your life again: the hope that this time will be the right time
Hiiii i wanna start reading zerocalcares work n_n what do you recommend starting with?
EEK!!!!!!!! HOLA RENÉ ok im doing it in english in case anyone else is curious.
the works of zerocalcare dont have some sort of plot and are very much independent stories. all his works are autobiographical to varying degrees and other characters are based on multitudes of people he's met throughout his life and with real experiences tied together to form a good narrative. this means there is no Correct order to follow but i'll elaborate based on my system since ive read and watched everything hes made.
zero's first actual book was the prophecy of the armadillo and he's improved a lot since then. nonetheless its VERY good and its the shortest one hes written so as an introductory story id confidently point you towards that if youre planning on reading more books by him
with that said, by far the BEST zerocalcare book and the one which you can read most easily without knowing anything about him (and which id recommend for someone who only wants to read one book) is definitely skeletons. it's more of a thriller. as a fun fact a solid part of the third act didn't actually happen but instead was written to give it the best closure and its Very Good. cw for some eye trauma. everyone Please read it
after the first two books i mentioned above, my system goes: forget my name (more of a drama; VERY good but works best if you already know him), macerie prime + its sequel (a long work but it poses a lot of interesting questions and expands on a lot of characters), and FINALLY: it's there for me when you die. (the newest book. maybe his magnum opus by definition. you need to have read some things and watched tear along the dotted line)
other books that are less relevant maybe and you could read whenever, if at all: tentacles at my throat (pretty silly. mostly fictional. aged a little badly. it's fun though), all quiet on rebibbia's front (a book written throughout the early 2020s that’s much more real life based bc its just about zero's experience making his first show and world issues over those years. nice but different from his other novels) and his actual most famous book, kobane calling (zero has done a lot of journalistic comics and this is the biggest work of them. retelling his volunteer work with the rovaja calling organization to report on the kurdish resistance and the situation in syria)
on the shows, the best one is tear along the dotted line and its his most internationally well-known work. it was my first experience with his work so i recommend it wholeheartedly, but for an introductory experience it's a bit hard to get through at first. it's very short though and the payoff is insanely insanely good so i definitely consider it something you should get to. i'd watch it after having read a book or two:)
ok thats it. i hope this helps and id love to answer any further questions^.^

my question is how the fuck does he just go on with his life. like his whole deal is he makes an incredible book or show in which he tells you "Basically i just dont deal with anything in my life and everyone around me is further ahead than me in every possible aspect and every day i get concerningly older in a way that makes me less appealing each passing moment and then im gonna die and i need everyone to tell me what to do and my biggest fear is that if i ever let anyone get too near me theyre gonna discover im genuinely the worst person alive and uniquely fucked up like no one else has ever been so i dont do things until its too late and it makes me miserable and ive been like this for 25 years so what im gonna do is im just gonna keep drawing it Okay? great" and then like. Like how do you talk with your real life friends and family after that when youre pouring your heart and soul into your art in which youre confessing to isolating yourself from them on purpose and considering yourself irredeemable. like just as a by the way everyone who watches my shows and reads my books knows all of this that im hiding from you. i would be sick of him but the guy is sick of himself enough already so like what are.you gonna do about it. its just crazy that when youre a normal person these things are unsaid because theyre your personal issues but hes a famous artist and his whole brand and public self image is him stabbing himself in the stomach and pulling out his guts over and over and being like Isnt this disgusting. this is why im afraid of living my life and these are the consequences of not living my life. and its all because of this. isnt it disgusting. back in they go now. see you next time. Like how the fuck do you fucking do it
you should read skeletons by zerocalcare
committed the crime of drawing zero the character with something that wasnt just his tshirt so heres my differentiation
