This chapter is becoming a bit of a beast (for me anyways, lol), so here's some more from it. Surprise Amir and Velimir!
-----------------
âZae?â Arthur asked, looking over at him, both curious and amused, âEverything alright?â
âYup,â the tenno said quickly, pulling his left hand to his chest. â...just realizing how sharp this knife is.â
Arthur sighed and shook his head before a grin spread across his lips.
âIt was bound to happen, I would have been more surprised if it didnât,â the protoframe said, chuckling softly. He held out his hand for Zaethrinâs as he asked, âHere, let me see it?â
Zaethrin pouted but placed his hand in Arthurâs.Â
Carefully the soldier examined the cut, it didnât appear to be too serious--i.e. he wouldnât need to get Lettie for stitches and could patch it up himself. While he was looking at it he couldnât help but note that the drifterâs blood seemed to glow slightly. Not quite the levels of a glow stick, but youâd definitely be able to notice it in a dark room. It had him wondering if it was some sort of Void thing or if humans in the future just had glowing blood.
Arthur made a soft humming sound as he guided the other man to a stool. âDoesnât look too deep. Youâre lucky you didnât cut the tip of your finger off.â
âVoid, that would have been even more embarrassing,â Zaethrin chuckled, taking a seat on the stool.
âTrue, it would have meant Iâd need to bring Lettie in,â Arthur said, setting down the med kit said combat medic provided him. He snickered when Zaethrin made a panicked face.
âPlease donât tell her this happenedâŠI donât need another lecture from her about taking care of myself,â the drifter pleaded.
âI promise, Zae, she won't find out from meâŠeven if sheâs right about taking care of yourself,â he said, grinning when Zaethrin pouted. Taking out the items he needed from the medkit, he pulled another stool closer so he could more easily work on cleaning Zaethrinâs cut. Did he need to be so close that their legs were touching? Probably not, but he figured itâd be easier for the drifter to rest his arm on the island countertopâŠand for absolutely no other reason. Ignoring any inner thoughts, he started cleaning the cut. Zaethrin only hissed slightly when the peroxide was applied but was quiet after that, simply watching Arthur take care of his wound. Or so Arthur thought. When he applied some antibiotic cream, he glanced up and caught those warm brown eyes with their soft teal glow staring right at him. Not at what he was doing, but right at him. Â
âUhâŠis something the matter?â he asked, feeling his heart in his throat all of a sudden.
Zaethrin shook his head as a soft flush crossed his face, hiding the light freckling he had on his cheeks and nose. His eyes fell away for a moment as he bit his lower lip before he looked back at the protoframe. There was an uncertainty in his eyes, but also a determination that Arthur swore sent electricity through his veinsÂ
The tenno took a deep breath and said, âArthur, I-â
âHEYGUYS!!! I heard there was stew!â
The sudden appearance of their resident technophile sent them both jumping in their seats.
Arthur sighed, loudly before turning an annoyed glare towards the speedster, âAmirâŠwe just started, and stew takes time.â
âBut Iâm hungryâŠand booooredâŠand that is the worst combo ever,â Amir whined, leaning against the counter with his elbows. âIs there something I can at least snack on?â
Zaethrin gave him an amused look before glancing at Arthur. âDo you think we could make the grilled cheese now?â
Amir instantly perked up at this. As he did, he seemed to notice Arthur bandaging the drifter's finger, âOooh, did the kitchen gods already claim a finger?â
âJust a little blood sacrifice, thatâs all,â Zaethrin joked, although he was red as a tomato.
âDo I need to go get Lett-â
âNo,â the other two said in unison, one panicked while the other was annoyed.Â
Amir snickered at that, holding up his hands. âOk, ok, no Lettie.â
Arthur shook his head and finished up putting the bandage on before standing and patting Zaethrin on the shoulder.
âYouâll live,â he said teasingly, before looking over at Amir with an unreadable expression. The Volt protoframe gave him the biggest puppydog eyes that Arthur. He lasted maybe thirty seconds before he ended up sighing and giving in to the loveable nuisance that was Amir Beckett. âI suppose we could make the grilled cheese firstâŠâ
âWoot!â Amir cheered, pumping his fists in the air. Zaethrin chuckled at that as he stood moving to clean up the cutting board, knife, and food that was contaminated.Â
Arthur gathered what they needed for the grilled cheese, carefully clearing room to make them. However, even as he went through the motions, there was a fluttering in his stomach and electricity still coursed through his veins. He glanced over at the drifter, whose back was to him as he cleaned. What was he going to say before Amir interrupted? Arthur had a pretty good idea what it could have been, especially with the recent uptick in flirting and looks Zaethrin had been giving him. Heâd be lying--to himself, mainly--if he said he didnât want that hunch to be trueâŠSol, now was not the time to think about this.
Later. Heâd worry about it later.
When he could really sit and thinkâŠ
With a couple of beersâŠ
Or several.
The rest of the lesson went surprisingly smoothly after they fed Amir and themselves. Once again Arthur found himself endeared to the drifter as he fell in love with the grilled cheese, proclaiming it his new favorite food. After Amir left, they finished making the stew with Arthur showing Zaethrin how to dice the onions--tears and all--and explained the steps of building the flavors and when to add what as the stew cooked. Zaethrin was attentive and asked several good questions when he was confused about something or why Arthur used a certain technique.Â
By the time it was ready to serve, the rest of the Hex and the Round Table had joined them for the meal. It was nice, having a moment like this. Peaceful. Warm. Like the family they slowly had become over the many loops that he could remember.
Eventually they all parted ways for the evening, either retiring for the night or going on patrol. Arthur, however, found his way to the bar for those beers he wantedâŠneeded?Â
âMind having this old man as a drinking buddy?â Velimir asked as he slid into the other side of the booth.
âDonât mind at all, mate,â Arthur chuckled, taking a long swig of his beer.
Velimir grinned as he cracked open his own, taking a slow sip after chilling it between his hands. âSo,â he started, leaning back, âhowâd our time traveler do with their cooking lesson?â
âFairly well, in my opinion,â Arthur said, fidgeting with the bottle in his hand. A small smile twitched on his lips when he added, âMinus cutting himself with a knife.â
âHa! If he had managed to get out of there completely unscathed, I would have been impressed,â the Libertatian snickered, âBut better a cut than a burn. Burns are the worst, especially on your hand! Yeugh!â
âTruth,â Arthur chuckled, raising his bottle to his lips again.
Velimirâs chuckles died down as he looked into his beer. âCanât help but feel sorry for theâŠheh, well, heâs not a kid, pretty sure heâs not only older than me, but older than all of us put togetherâŠbut still, canât help but feel sorry for him.â
âOh?âÂ
âYeah, after he asked what a snowman was--talk about breaking my big frosty heart--it got me thinking about everything heâs missed,â Velimir sighed, taking a long drink of his beer, âSure, he might have spent centuries in that little pocket dimension thing, but he never got real experiences like the rest of us. No sweet sixteen, no learning to drive and terrifying their parents with their lack of self preservation at the same time, or graduation, or any other milestones. Hells, probably didnât even get to have that first crush experienceâŠâ
âYeah,â Arthur said quietly, slowly sipping his beer. He knew Zaethrin did have that latter experience, but considering how he knew, he kept quiet. Although, it did get him thinking againâŠbut not right now. Not enough beer in him.
âThe minute it starts snowing, Iâm going to show him how to build a snowman,â the Frost protoframe stated, a twinkle in his eye as he said it, âAnd maybe a good old snow ball fightâŠâ
âIâm surprised you have tried to create some,â Arthur commented.
âI tried, I really did,â Velimir whined with a small pout, âI canât seem to get the consistency right. These abilities only seem to be good for two things, freezing the shit out of enemiesâŠand spicing up things in the bedroom. M really likes it when I--â An empty water bottle flew across the bar and smacked the older man in the head. âOw! Rude!â
Arthur chuckled and glanced over where he saw Minerva behind the bar, rolling her eyes and shaking her head. He looked back at Velimir and said, âIâm sure youâll figure it out after a couple of loops.â
âHereâs hoping,â the older man sighed.
They continued talking, mostly about the loop, speculating on how it really worked and why they could remember some loops but not others. Minerva eventually cut them off before they got too sloshed. Arthur was pretty sure it was to save her ears if they started up singing again. He was tempted to protest, but she was probably right. Less of a chance to make a damn fool of himselfâŠbut then again, the night was still youngâŠ

Chapter 1: Arthur lends his ear to a nightmare rattled Drifter, Zaethrin.
OMG I'm writing shit! \o/ Just not any of my many many OTHER WIPs....>.> But the muses are really picking my brain for this, so here we are. XD
Trying something new with this one in terms of writing style, we'll see how I like it in the end. This is also going to get a little dark since Zaethrin is going to talk about the sibling he lost and how he lost them. There's none of that in this snippet though.
Let me know what you think so far! <3
-=-=-=-=-=-=-
The mall, for once, was quiet. No music blaring from the speakers. No gunshot ringing out from the makeshift shooting range. No noises from the arcade. Just the humming of lights, the whirling of the motors from the cleaning robots, and the sound of whetstone on metal as Arthur sharpened his skana.Â
It honestly felt peacefulâŠ
âHey, Arthur?â
Well, there goes the peace and quiet. Not that Arthur minded, considering who it was.Â
The Drifter, Zaethrin, for all his sass and snark that could grate on Arthurâs nerves at times, was someone he had slowly grown to trust. It helped considerably that Zae had been patient and stubborn with him when trying to get to know Arthur better. Most people who tried usually gave up by that point. Zaethrin didnât push--much--when Arthur shut down a subject, which he appreciated and returned in kind when asking Zae about himself. Over time, heâd become someone Arthur genuinely enjoyed chatting with.Â
He supposed it also helped that their first conversation over the KIM had Arthur in stitches. Petersham. He hadnât laughed like that in ages, and it still brought a smile to his face when he thought about it. Not to mention the fact that Zae was too damn adorable when it came to things that seemed perfectly mundane to Arthur, like mood rings or omeletts--square omeletts to be precise.Â
Plus, there were also the other manâs valiant attempts at flirting with him--Arthur still couldnât figure out why he bothered. Maybe he just liked to flirt? Regardless, he had to admit heâd become downright fond of the time traveler. It certainly didnât hurt that Zae was more than easy on the eyes tooâŠand that thought was going right back where it had been--far from the forefront of his mind where it belonged.
âYeah, Drift-?â The other manâs moniker fell short on his lips when Arthur looked up and saw Zaethrinâs face. A worried pit grew in his stomach as he quickly sat up and set aside his skana and whetstone. Arthur had seen that haunted look more times than heâd like to count over the years--from fellow soldiers, the other members of HexâŠand in the mirror most mornings. It was the look one got when nightmares of trauma reared their ugly heads, and Arthur could only imagine what could cause that for the man in front of him. Those luminous eyes screamed for help and comfort. âZaethrinâŠwhatâs wrong?â
âDamn, I must really look like shit if you instantly became worried like that,â the other man chuckled softly, but the laughter didnât reach his face. He stood there a few moments, staring at the Protoframeâs shoulder, eyes glazed and distant. Arthur was about to say something when Zaethrin sighed and rubbed his eyes. âI couldâŠI could really use someone to talk toâŠif you donât mindâŠif not, I can always wait for-â
âOf course I donât mind, Zae,â Arthur said before the other man could finish. As he stood from his chair, he saw some of the tension in the Drifterâs shoulders relax a little. Approaching Zaethrin, Arthur gently took his elbow and led him over to the other empty chair behind the counter. âCome on and have a seatâŠcan I get you anything?â
âIâd say some hot coco, but somehow I highly doubt we have any,â Zaethrin replied with a crooked grin.
âSadly, you are correct, we do not,â Arthur confirmed, returning the grin with a small one of his own. He was pleased to see the grin reach Drifterâs eyes. That was a good sign. He made a mental note to requisition Quincy with getting some coco--itâd probably cost Arthur a favor with the sniper, but itâd be worth it. Pulling over the chair he had occupied earlier, Arthur sat down across from Zae, leaning forward on his forearms, hands clasped between his knees. â...nightmares?â he probed.
Zaethrin nodded, pulling his legs up on the chair, hugging one to his chest as the other crossed under it. He placed his chin on his knee, eyes glued to a spot on Arthurâs chest. âYeahâŠâ
When he didnât elaborate further, Arthur prompted, âDo you want to talk about them? Or we can always talk about something elseâŠâ
âI meanâŠhonestly, I donât want to talk about themâŠbut I think I need to talk about them, if only to see if itâd helpâŠâ Zae replied, arms tightening around his leg. Those warm brown eyes, with their eerie teal glow, locked with his. âJustâŠa warningâŠitâsâŠdarkâŠIâŠI canât really sugar coat anythingâŠâ
âI donât need you to sugar coat it, Zae,â he reassured the other man, âIâm not going to sit here and say I can handle anything you throw at me--Sol only knows the shit youâve been through that would make me crumble like a biscuit. But Iâm here for you, regardless.â
Arthur saw a small smile cross Zaethrinâs lips before he said, âThanks.â He closed his eyes for a moment, breathing in deep before letting it out slowly.
âI mentioned before that I had a sibling,â he started, waiting until Arthur nodded. âIzzy--Isabel--my little sisterâŠshe was five years younger than me,â a fond look crossed his face as let out a soft laugh, âexcuse me, four and a half, not five, as she always reminded meâŠShe was nine, almost tenâŠFuck, sheâd been so excited that sheâd finally be in the double digitsâŠto be considered a âbig kidâ so she could follow her older brother to areas of the Zariman only the older kids were allowed. She wanted to follow me everywhere, even when there were times I really wish she didnât--moody young teenager. But despite that, I called her my âlittle shadowââŠâ
Zaethrin looked away for a moment, jaw clenching and unclenching.
I had a tough time trying to figure out how to start this fic and how long it's going to be, because I wanted to do several things from Arthur POV but I also didn't want to draw this pre-relationship out too much more. lol. So the start is one of the cooking lessons our Broody King had promised.
I googled pub songs and sort of landed on this one ('The Wild Rover'). -shrug- I'm not a music person, so I sort of winging it with Arthur's singing...I don't know why, but his voice strikes me as one that be good for a pub song. But if anyone has any suggestions for this or may future moments of Arthur singing, I'm all ears...err...eyes?
--------
âI've been a wild rover for many's the year
and I've spent all me money on whiskey and beer
but now I'm returning with gold in great store
and I never will play the wild rover no moreâ
Arthur sang softly as he got everything ready for the cooking lesson. Today was going to be a simple one, mostly so he could gauge how much Zaethrin knew and how much heâd need to teach him. He had picked two of the easier recipes from what the drifter sent him. A stew andâŠgrilled cheese.Â
Broadsword:
Grilled cheese? Really?
Drifter:
What!? It sounds delicious!
Broadsword:
Sol, you are bloody adorable.
Drifter:
(˶ ïœ°Ì â€ïœ°Ì ˶)
A small smile formed as he shook his head a little. Zaethrin never ceased to amaze him with how he made the mundane seem like they were the most mindblowing things around.
It was cute. Granted, so was the drifterâŠ
Ignoring that thought, Arthur continued to sing.
âAnd it's no, nay, never
no, nay never no more
will I play the wild rover
no never no moreâ
âDamn, Eleanor was right,â said a familiar voice from the doorway, âYou really do have an amazing singing voice.â
Arthur hated how much he fumbled with the container of garlic powder at the sudden appearance of someone else in the room. So much for all his training. When he heard giggling, he slowly turned and glared. Zaethrin was standing in the doorway, hiding his laughter behind a fist, eyes crinkled and shoulders shaking.
âSorry,â Zaethrin said with a soft giggle, fully entering the room. âI thought you heard me come in.â
âItâs fine,â Arthur sighed, moving on to the next task--tying together a bundle of dried herbs. âI have an apron for you on the stool there. Just wash your hands and we can get started.â
âAlright,â the tenno said. From the corner of his eye he saw Zaethrin pick up the dark purple apron and look at it. He watched him hold it up, head tilting slightly.
âEverything okay?â Arthur asked as he turned, an eyebrow raised. He was a little surprised to see disappointment cross the other manâs features as he glanced down at Arthurâs apron. WhatâŠohâŠrightâŠ
âOh, and please donât forget the cute apron.â
Sol, the drifter couldnât have been serious about thatâŠcould he?
âYeah, everythingâs good,â Zaethrin replied, with a bright, genuine smile. He put on the apron and tied it off in the back before asking, âSoâŠwhere do we start on my culinary journey?â
Arthur couldnât help but return the smile, it was infectious. He went back to his preparations as he replied, âWeâre starting off easy today. I want to see what you know already, so I picked two simple recipes. The stew and theâŠgrilled cheese.â
Zaethrin laughed, a light airy sound, shaking his head. âIf you had to eat the same cubed rations day after day for centuries on end, a grilled cheese would look divine to you too.â
âFair enough,â the soldier chuckled. âWeâll start the stew, then make the grilled cheese as itâŠwell, stews.â
âSounds good to me,â Zaethrin said, chuckling softly. He slid up next to Arthur, observing what he was doing. âWhatâs that? And why are you tying it up?â
âHerbs for flavor--rosemary, thyme, and bay leaves,â Arthur answered, holding the bundle up by the string. âAnd Iâm doing this so itâs easier to fish out of the stew. Iâd rather not get a bite of a leaf or stem if I can help it.â
âMakes sense,â the tenno murmured, stepping back a little when Arthur moved to pull over the cutting board.
âWhat are your knife skills like?â he asked Zaethrin as he placed a peeled carrot on the board and started to roughly chop it.
âUhâŠwell, in combat theyâre pretty good? And you know I can cut up my food into perfect squares...â
âThatâs true,â Arthur chuckled, finishing the carrot he was working on and sliding the board over to the tenno. âYou should be able to handle the rough cuts then, just be careful to not catch a finger with the knife.â
âI think I can manage that,â Zaethrin said, taking up the knife and starting to chop up another carrot.Â
Arthur nodded in approval before working on getting the beef ready..at least he hoped it was beef.
âWhereâd you learn how to cook?â the other man asked.
âMainly from my mother, much to my fatherâs chagrin,â Arthur replied with a soft chuckle, âAnd I picked up a few things while traveling with the military.â
âHe didnât approve of you learning to cook?â Zaethrin inquired, pausing what he was doing to look at Arthur, his brow furrowing in confusion, âBut it sounds like a useful skill to have.â
âMy father is very set in his ways,â the protoframe sighed, shaking his head, âStuck in the idea that only women should be in the kitchenâŠdidnât mind me learning to cook in the wilderness, of course, because thatâs survival skills.â
Zaethrin snorted, going back to chopping, moving on to the potatoes. âHe would have gotten along with my momâs parents then.â
âThey didnât want you to learn to cook?â Arthur queried, glancing over at the drifter.
âNo, the opposite actually,â the other man replied.
âOh,â Arthur murmured before what Zaethrin said clicked and his brow furrowed, âWaitâŠwhat?â
âHmm?â Zaethrin stopped what he was doing to look at Arthur again, who stared right back.
âIf they have a similar belief as my fatherâŠwhy would they want you to learn to cook?â
There was a long moment before something seemed to click for Zaethrin and soon soft laughter rumbled from the tennoâs throat. âOh right, you werenât there when I was discussing some of the implants I have with Amir, when this came up, were you?â he asked, with a small grin as he tapped lightly on the cognitive relays that lined the right side of his head. Â
Arthur wasnât sure if that was a rhetorical question, but still shook his head. He became worried when Zaethrinâs shoulders tensed slightly and he looked...uneasy? Worried?
âI uhâŠâ the tenno cleared his throat, âI wasnât born maleâŠand my motherâs parents didnâtâŠagree with my identity when I came out. They still wanted to mold me into the âperfect wifeâ to marry off.â
It took Arthur only a moment to absorb the information he was given. He was a little surprised, sure, but he was more focused on the latter part. âHuhâŠwhat absolute wankers,â he finally said, almost growling it out.
Zaethrin laughed again, fuller this time as his face lit up with a smile and his shoulders relaxed a little. âNo clue what âwankerâ means, but from your tone Iâm going to assume itâs not a compliment.â
âItâs not,â Arthur chuckled, going back to trimming the fat off the beef. âAlthough, I have to admit Iâm surprised the future isnât more accepting.â
âI mean, it isâŠat least compared to what Iâve read about this time period,â the drifter explained, âBut if you werenât Orokin, a lot of things came down to money and influence. My momâs family came from money--âposhâ is the word Quincy used, I think. Very set in their ways and always wanting to further their influence to go even higher up the social ladder. Mainly through marriage--thank Lua my parents never bought into that shit and put a stop to any bullshit my momâs parents were trying to pull...â
âIâm almost afraid to askâŠâ
âIt was nothing super nefariousâŠwell, compared to other things Iâve dealt with,â Zaethrin sighed, placing the last of the cut up potatoes in the bowl before starting on the celery, âBut they had a marriage arranged for me.â
âShit, what rubbish people,â Arthur commented, shaking his head.
âAgreed,â Zaethrin chuckled.
A comfortable silence fell over them as they continued to work on the stew. From the corner of his eye, Arthur saw Zaethrin glancing over at him every once and a while. He was about to ask if there was something wrong when the other man released what could only be described as a squeak. A really adorable squeak at that.
âZae?â Arthur asked, looking over at him, both curious and amused, âEverything alright?â
âYup,â the tenno said quickly, pulling his left hand to his chest. â...just realized how sharp this knife is.â
The protoframe sighed and chuckled, holding out his hand for Zaethrinâs. âIt was bound to happen, I would have been more surprised if it didnât. Let me see, please?â

Because I can't get enough of my Drifter. Took me forever to get the pretty boi look I wanted. So many visage and slider changes! Not to mention getting the eyeliner right where it didn't make him look like a smudged panda.
ARGH, LOOK AT HIM!
(I need to get a commission of him done. Just...can't decide on a pose for him and Arthur. ugh...choices, my nemesis.)
I'm sure you are all dying to know...yes, I did get my Broody King! \o/ I'm going to reset everything so I can get the whole 'confession/ask to date' thing via KIM--the asking out in person was a little lackluster--but I'm waiting until the year reset...I want the kiss cutscene.
Also...
Sir! You can't just say stuff like that every time I walk by!
...DE knows 100% what it's doing. 1000% actually...Sweet Lua...in that voice too.
Pretty sure I'm going to write Zaethrin with a voice kink or something...-dead-
Aaaand this is why I got this skin. I already had a similar idea in mind for a story...thank you for the encouragement Arthur!
I'm torn between wanting to do the Asshat route for Zaethrin's confession, just a soft confession during that same...argument(?), or wait till Arthur asks him about the flirting and his feelings.
I sort of want to do the Asshat because there's never really an apology from Arthur for being an...well, asshat. He does if you don't confess or are already dating him, but nothing else otherwise. I kind of want to write that in. Zaethrin knows where Arthur's coming from, having been stuck in a loop himself and knowing he'd be pissed if there was someone there who could come and go as they please. It doesn't make Arthur said hurt any less, but he gets it.
Also, the whole 'I'm not even human' part would make Zaethrin heartbroken for the man. Because he gets that on so many levels.
Buuuut, with the softer confession, it's kind of cute the way Arthur is so hopeful and vulnerable. "Then...I saw you come alive. Because of us. Maybe even...Because of me." Ugh, so fricken CUTE.
Of course there's the 'Arthur asking route.' And him threaten to break both your ankles if you're pulling his leg still. Pfft. And then there's this:
Broadsword:
Good.
Broadsword:
Because...
Broadsword:
It's mutual.
Drifter:
:D :D :D
Broadsword:
Three emoteethingies must mean something good.
Drifter:
You are so adorable.
Broadsword:
Yeah, yeah.
Ugh, these two...
Writing this out has helped me a bit. I think I know what I'm going to do in game--depending on what order they give me the convos. And what I'm going to write in my fics...if I ever get that point. @_@
