The Star Z-45

The Z-45 was developed in the early 1940s by the Spanish manufacturer Star Bonifacio Echeverria. If it reminds you of the German MP40, that’s intentional - Star’s plan was to sell these to the German army before the Allies went and fucked up that idea by kicking the shit out of the Nazis, presumably in an attempt to stop them from doing something as stupid as buying a gun from the Basque (among other reasons). It’s chambered in 9mm Largo because it was still trendy at the time for everyone and their mother to have their own proprietary cartridges, the idea of “standardization” not really being a thing until a decade or so later.
The gun itself is a fairly standard blowback-operated sub-machine gun, with one very unique feature - the trigger. If you look closely you’ll see it’s shaped like a “3″ with a small protrusion separating the upper and lower halves. This is actually how the fire rate is controlled: pull on the lower half for semi-auto or the upper half for full-auto. The engineer in me loves the idea and I’m very annoyed I can’t find any pictures or video online of the actual mechanism, but looking at it from a practical perspective it’s just begging for disaster. I’d imagine that without extensive training and muscle memory consistently getting the position you want in the middle of a firefight is probably a bitch. It sounds like the kind of idea someone entirely too clever for their own good came up with in a lab and didn’t think too hard about real-world application.
