kaiser knows you're sick.

you're not aware when he's observing the napkin that clearly sports crimson when you cough into it.

he only silently watches the bin you threw it into.

he pretends to ignore the ugly crackling and spluttering of your lungs as his ear lays on your chest. your form still and slow with sleep, each intake of breath sounding painful rather then bringing you life.

he holds you tighter.

he doesn't like it when you lie to him. he pretends it's a bad dream when your condition only gets worse.

he can't pretend anymore when he sees you so frail in that hospital bed. he can't pretend it doesn't hurt when that nurse first attempted to shoo him away, assuming he was a random kid trying to annoy patients. just because he didn't look like you. he can't pretend not to cry, when he finally crawls into your lap and under the blanket. you're weak, yet you still find the energy to hold him tightly, even through the his shudders and quiet sobs.

thinking of younger!kaiser, who you catch on the fire–exit stairs on the side of your apartment complex, nursing a lit cigarette in his hand, visibly half–smoken. (the air smells like bitter nicotine, it lingers hard in his nose and on his fingers.) in your shock, you're quick to snatch it from him, crushing it under your shoe before scolding him.

he's young. it messes up your lungs. where did he even get it from?

"the older boys upstairs." he says it nonchalantly while shrugging, signalling he found it no big deal. he gives you that blank look, a habit when he's in trouble, as if he's shutting off.

"it's bad for you," you say for the fourth time you began your rant. "the older boys should know better. you should know better."

his face twists. his voice snapping swiftly. "you're not my mother."

i know. you wanted to say.

you raised your brow, trying to keep your expression neutral. you sigh deeply. "i never stated otherwise."

he doesn't respond, simply rising up and retreating back into your shared apartment through the open window.

ughhhh imagine if its a zombie apocalypse au but with younger!kaiser but instead of you getting infected its him that gets bitten and you only realise it when you're getting checked at the barriers before the safe zone. you can pass, leave the horror and desecration and live a somewhat normal life–but you would have to leave him behind.

you don't have the heart to abandon him, so you stay behind with him as he turns. crouched in a dark, filthy, desolate alley, holding him tightly even as his frothy mouth bites into your neck.

you don't regret a single second of it.

you knew all along destiny wasn't on your side anyways, your just glad he wasn't turning alone and scared.

TW; Bulling, crying, stereotypes, themes of struggling, during the time of this AU. may be read as a stand alone. angst, hurt with a bit of comfort at the end.

feel like nothing fazes young kaiser, with everything he's gone through he's quite a numb and dissociative child–but something that truly makes him upset is when he's aware strangers know he's not your son.

he's already irritated when the fragile old woman in the store assumed you were his babysitter. you attempted to politely correct her, but she didn't seem to grasp the memo. his mood soured deeper when the shop keeper scolded him for bothering you, suspecting he was begging for money. your correction again was short, rather curt this time.

he didn't like the weird stares he would get when he went out with you, or when the older sleazy boys in the apartment complex taunted him; sneering that you weren't his mother, just another stray dog that happened to find someone sympathetic enough to take a piece of shit like him in.

and then when the day’s all over, he crawls into your lap in silence, his face half buried in your chest. your hands brush through his blonde locks as you softly ask him if he's okay, and only then does he notice his own salty tears and quivering lips.

you whisper that you love and adore him all the same, even if he didn't come from your womb. you whisper the words as if you knew every broken thought he had. you gingerly tuck a few hairs behind his ear.

it hurts.
