Life is made up of Befores and Afters.

Before you could walk. After you learned how to ride a bike. Before you go to school.

After your mother is murdered in an alleyway.

Allison’s memories of the events of that night are crystal clear. The man emerging from the shadows like a monster out of one of the fairy tales that Aunt Kate read her.

The thud as her father, wounded, fell to the ground.

The blood and pearls in the gutter as her mother lay lifeless.

And she herself able to do nothing. Powerless. Weak.

She hated it.

So she threw herself into being better, stronger. Aunt Kate helped.

And a year after Batman first emerged from the shadows, a small, colorful child appeared at his side.
