Link on Facebook page. Young minds are curious. A young child will want to be accepted by peers in school, in the neighborhood and online. Before YOLO there was Lipsi, Sarahah, Ask.fm, Yik Yak, Whisper, Secret, After School and even Formspring from 2009 to name a few. YOLO is the newest "anonymous" app to hit #1 in the app stores. My most recent conversation about YOLO was with an 11 year old who is struggling with the "inappropriate" and "rude" messages that she is receiving. YOLO connects fluidly with Snapchat and is likely the reason that kids are jumping on board. My conversation with the 11 year old was around mean things being said and her struggle to deal with comments made "anonymously". She was struggling with why people would say such unkind things to her through the app. My response to her was that it's easy to say unkind things online when no one knows who you are. It's much more difficult to say unkind things face to face. However, here is a quote from the YOLO app developer,Gregoire Henrion, and what he believes the app will foster: " 'We feel that anonymity can unlock super good behaviors. We think we’re more emphatic, more human than other anonymous apps before us' Henrion explains". Obviously Mr. Henrion is not in touch with the reality of human behaviors online. For the 11 year old, we ended by deciding to delete the YOLO app and share kindness in-person to all that she meets. I would not recommend the YOLO app for any age youth. There is no constructive value for your childs development in this app and it's function. ~Ryan. #shapethesky #parenting #YOLO #YOLOapp #snapchat #cyberbullying #developmentalpsychology #kindness #socialmedia #wisdom #wisekids #wiseteens #responsibility #counselor #therapist #therapy #counseling #digitalkids #digitalteens #parentingadvise #digitalparent #socialworker #counselinglife #training #learning #CEU https://www.instagram.com/p/BxfJ6qqgvSz/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=17zzf0xijjvaw
