Kickstarter Spotlight: Jenny LeClue
Kickstarter has seen its fair share of missteps as of late what with the Yogsventures project going belly-up after raising nearly half a million dollars along with the whole Areal debacle. There are, however, still projects that are worth taking a look at. Mografi Studios has a potential gem on its hands with Jenny LeClue.
It is strange that the point-and-click adventure game has made such a strong comeback isn't it? Telltale Games has definitely carved out a path for other studios to follow and even Tim Schafer's Double Fine studios delivered (sorta) on the promise of a Kickstarter-backed adventure game in Broken Age. This will draw comparisons to that game but one thing stands out above all: the emphasis on rewarding you for poking and prodding EVERY SINGLE THING IMAGINABLE. Clues can be found in the strangest of places and while Broken Age and other such games promise a much deeper sandbox experience at times they don't always deliver. Joe Russ and the team at Mografi are bringing all the whimsy and fun it can muster while still offering up even the most inquisitive player a reason to be so damned inquisitive.
The art direction is smooth as silk and the overall aesthetic is just awash with pulp sensibilities. There is a lot to love in the reveal trailer along with the numerous screenshots and production videos accompanying the project. This isn't some project that shows some concept art and asks for your money but, rather, shows a pretty significantly polished product already that just needs further iteration and needs money to sail this ship on home.
There have been some definite reasons, lately, to be hesitant to back projects online. Be a wise consumer and invest where there is definite evidence of actual work being done. Mografi'sJenny LeClue appears to be every bit of what it promises to be and if early buzz is an indicator this shouldn't have a problem launching on PC, Mac, Linux and iOS. It will, as all of them are these days, an episodic affair (or appisodic as the dev refers to it -- as there's an app and episodes. Yeah.) and potential console support is a stretch goal.
