One thing I have learned in life is that nothing is ever what you think it will be. This was so true about my journey of becoming a yoga teacher. Like I expect most others, I thought I would learn yoga poses and spiritual principles and that everything would be black and white like any other class. However, in this journey, the focus was less on these concepts and concrete ideas and more on a lesson on loving and excepting myself. I, of course, learned the poses and learned them well. I learned the concepts of anatomy and spirituality that go along with teaching yoga to others. I learned how to speak to a class and perform physical adjustments to help students in their yoga practice.
All of this, however, became secondary to finding me. I will never be able to explain in words the transformation I underwent and show you the immensity of the feelings and emotions that have come from it, but I will give it a shot. Being a yoga teacher is much more than I expected, but it is also much more rewarding than I expected. I would not trade my experience for the world. I have been reborn as a strong and connected person and have achieved things in my life that would not have been possible before. I can only imagine the gifts I will encounter in the future.
So if you’re wondering how to be a yoga teacher or what it is like to be a yoga teacher, here is my short list of everything you should know.
Number #1 — Being a yoga teacher is not about being able to do all the fancy, complicated poses, like a headstand, forearm stand, or some of the arm balances. What it’s actually about is cueing, which means effectively using your voice to tell people what to do with their bodies. So cueing and compassion. So don’t get down on yourself if you can’t do all the super fancy things because really good teachers are about great cueing and being extremely compassionate and loving with their students.
Number #2 — You want to do some training. You can earn a Yoga Certification online
that will help you become more marketable as an instructor. Becoming certified in yoga is one way for teachers to show students they are qualified and experienced instructors. If you want to do yoga teacher training, the most common format is to do what’s called a 200-hour teacher training. So you cover a lot of material in 200 hours, everything from teaching, anatomy, and philosophy. You want to research where you do this 200-hour training because it will teach you everything you need to know about being a successful teacher. You can do a 200-hour training all at once, in a month-long in-person intensive, throughout many weekends, or you can even do a 200-hour training online. If you do something online, ensure it’s interactive, and you get direct feedback and support from a teacher over video conference.
Number #3 — You want to practice teaching. Many people think they will do their 200-hour certification and feel confident right off the bat. It takes years to build up that confidence, to have a presence in your teaching, and to have a strong voice. So you want to start practicing teaching everyone you can. Teach your mom, dog, and anyone who’ll listen to you. Just start logging those teaching hours because, like anything in life, the more you do it, the better you’ll get.
Number #4 — Charging money for people to take your classes. This could mean you’re teaching in a studio or hosting events in your home. You could teach in corporations, like going into businesses and teaching there or partnering with local restaurants to have yoga and wine nights. You could lead retreats. You could teach online, like me. There have never been more opportunities to find success as a yoga teacher in a way that you really enjoy and are passionate about.
Number #5 — Start a mailing list. You can keep in touch with the people who come and enjoy your classes. This is even more important than having a Website.
