One year ago today started with beautiful blue skies and sunshine. I had less than a quarter tank of gas but was running late for work so decided I'd fill up at lunch. Lunch time came around and it was still so nice out so I went for a walk to Staples to get markers for Santo's business. While inside the building, with minimal windows, I was blissfully unaware of the chaos that would shortly consume my life. I was taking pictures and sending them to Santo asking, "do you want this kind? Or what about this kind?" Then I paid for the markers and headed outside to walk back to work. That's when I saw it, the almighty Beast, up the hill in Abasand, and I began to run. Of all the moments that people remember from that day, my first will not be about having to fight my way through lines to fuel up the Rogue, or the panic I felt trying to decide what to pack, or the multiple phone calls and messages trying to decide when it was best to leave, or the unbearably slow drive down the burning highway, it will forever be about dry-erase markers. As a Fort McMurray resident, our lives are regularly spoken about now in one of three ways: before the fire, during evacuation, and after we returned home. There will never be enough words to thank everyone involved since that fateful day. To those near and far who helped us persevere through the last 365 days and beyond, I whole-heartedly thank you. Life is not about what you have, but about who you surround yourself with. Life is hard, and exciting, and scary, and wonderful all at the same time. We can't change the past but we can continue to move forward, together. #ymmstrong #oneyear #friendstofamily #thankyoufirstresponders #thankyoueveryone
