It had been a while--maybe a month or so, she wasn’t quite sure, Tokyo had its own running clock that seemed separate from everywhere else after all. She stepped back into the wine bar, dressed far more casually this time in a simple old graphics tee and some jeans, coming straight from her studio. Catching sight of her friend manning the bar on a relatively quiet Sunday evening, she smiled and settled into the relaxed atmosphere of the place. She strode forward with a few confident steps, a flair about her that was fairly different from the previous time that she had come in here, frustrated and uncertain, and slid into a seat by the bar. She waved to catch his attention, a friendly grin on her face.

Every time Miki told herself to stop staying in the studio till ridiculous hours of the night, she ended up breaking her own rule. This time, she stepped out of the studio at half past 2am, her shoulders sore and tense from crouching over her drawing desk the whole evening. A chilly wind had picked up since she was last outdoors, and her attempts to light a smoke were rendered futile by the relentless gusts of wind. She cussed, a little more loudly than she would usually have liked, but there was hardly anyone on this street corner at this time despite it being in Ginza. Nearby, the door sign of a bar creaked in the wind, and Miki dragged her exhausted feet towards it, determined to get a nightcap to ease those muscles before finding a way to get home.

Upon entering, she saw that (thankfully) it was a relatively quiet night inside too. A few groups of patrons dotted the seats near the back, while the bar was unoccupied except for one other patron, a man with platinum hair. She slid into an open seat, several seats between herself and the other customer, and signalled the bartender over.

Miki was feeling a little out of place, to say the least. Balancing on stilettos that she wasn’t used to (they were flattering, she would admit that much), she walked gingerly into the studio where the shoot was happening, constantly aware of the strain that the shoes were putting on the balls of her feet. That wasn’t the only reason she was feeling anxious--when Hiro, her aspiring fashion photographer friend had called in a favor for her to be a background model for his new project, she had been expecting something a little smaller. Perhaps a pamphlet for a new show that a student designer was putting together. 

She hadn’t been expecting a proper magazine shoot, with proper, more professional models who were already taking their places in front of the backdrop. And while Miki was just supposed to stand behind them with a few other wide-eyed girls who looked just as nervous as she was, she couldn’t help but throw Hiro a pleading look. He only threw her a thumbs up and a mouthed “daijoubu” in return.

“sorry Miki, but I really can’t make it...”

Miki resisted the urge to cuss under her breath as she stood under the lamplight outside the foreign language film theatre. Her friend had enthusiastically invited her out to see a new art house film, and though Miki had quite a limited understanding of the genre, she still decided to come to humor her friend. But now that the other has bailed because of some ridiculous boyfriend issues, Miki was left standing here alone as other packs of film enthusiasts entered the theatre.

Miki had been told several times by friends and acquaintances how terrible of an idea it was for her to be jogging at night, but it was a hard habit to kick. She enjoyed the somewhat slowed pace of Tokyo late at night–not that Tokyo ever slowed, per se, but it was definitely a different place at night than during the day. Turning round the corner of her usual route, she spotted someone dressed in full black, strolling casually towards her at a relaxed pace. She slowed her footsteps as she recognized the figure from their brief social media interactions, and bowed her head gently before offering a friendly wave.

Ginza was usually quiet by the time Miki left the studio on those late nights that she spent bent over her work desk. Few people wandered the streets, usually she would only ever come across several off-work hostesses and drunk salarymen. But tonight as she stepped out onto the street level and locked the doors behind her, she spotted a lonesome looking figure looking quizzically into the shop window of the cafe on the first floor of her gallery/studio. She looked around–the person seemed to be fully alone, focused on something, yet also she could tell that his mind was wandering, that he didn’t quite arrive at this current position he was in with a specific purpose in mind. Shifting her bag strap on her shoulder somewhat uneasily, she called out.
