For the Star Wars Asks: what is the antagonist you absolutely cannot sympathize with?
Oh boy!
I’m going to say that overall, it has to be Palpatine. Unlike Dooku or Maul or Ventress, Palps is basically a psychotic murderer who has zero moral compass. Even in his backstory in Darth Plagueis, he’s already a troubled adolescent who kills off his whole family with a relatively small nudge from Damask (at least, compared to Anakin, who needed to be groomed his entire life in order to turn. Palps didn’t need all that much encouragement.) I mean, it makes him a great baddie, because he is so devoid of empathy, of any tragic backstory (and I hope the higher-ups at Disney/Star Wars keep it that way. I love my complicated villains as much as the next person, but sometimes you just need a Bad Guy™ for the story. And Palpatine is definitely one of those.) What this means, however, is that I absolutely cannot sympathize with him.
