Since apparently the anniversary of “That Will Be All” has come up, I figure now’s as good a time as any to post this little meta thing I’ve had in my drafts for a long time. This is what comes of watching “What’s the Use of Feeling (Blue)” over and over and over way too many times and being impressed by how much characterization can be packed into one short song.
Summary: When Yellow is initially lecturing Blue, Blue tunes her out; but as Yellow reveals more of her own feelings, Blue pays more and more attention to her.
The first part of the song is focused on Blue — Blue’s feelings and motivations, Blue’s obligation to fulfil her role as a Diamond. “What do you ever see here that doesn’t make you feel worse than you do?” “Why would you want to employ her subjects that destroyed her?” “You’ve got to be a leader, Blue!”
Yellow is in lecturing mode, and Blue has the look of someone who just wants the lecture to be over with as soon as possible. She turns away and never engages with or looks at Yellow directly, whereas Yellow keeps following her around and getting in her face.
When Yellow goes into the first “of course we still love her/and we’re always thinking of her/but now there’s nothing we can do...” it’s the first time she’s mentioned anything about herself in the song, even if only by association. It’s also the first that Blue actually turns her head to look at her for just a moment.
At this point, the focus of the song starts to shift, and Blue starts paying more attention. Yellow, while still trying to talk about Blue, inadvertently describes more of her own feelings and wishes instead.
“How can you stand to be here with it all?” Obviously, the one who can’t stand to be at the Zoo is not Blue, who keeps coming back, but rather Yellow. Holly Blue Agate mentioning that “I never expected to see Yellow Diamond in person!!!” indicates that Yellow probably avoids the place entirely.
“Wouldn’t you rather forget her?” It’s Yellow, not Blue, who would rather forget.
“Won’t it be grand to get rid of it all?” Not for Blue, who deliberately hoards Pink’s possessions and seems ambivalent about destroying Pink’s planet, but rather for Yellow, who “will take immense satisfaction in erasing that hideous rock from our star maps.”
From there on Yellow is pretty obviously singing about stuff that she herself wants and feels. By now Blue is completely riveted and staring at her.
Finally, Yellow mentions herself and her feelings directly — “Don’t you know I miss her too?” At this point, she breaks down and can’t continue. This time, Yellow is the one who turns away and retreats, and Blue is the one who follows her.

She’s a killer full of anger and rage due to the life that was stolen from her. Due to this, she will attach herself very quickly to those who resemble her former life: hard workers, domestic, overly caring to any family. She will find herself drawn to you, watching you struggle from the shadows in the trials. Once she has decided she wants you, she will move quickly to eradicate the other horrible people surrounding you. Once all three are on hooks, her sights are set on you. She will move through the shadows, watching the marks you claw into the ground before you are grabbed. Her arms will always be holding onto you, even if they aren’t attached. You are free to run, but once the world comes crashing down, you won’t be able to escape her.
Frank, Julie, Joey, and Susie - The Legion
These four are not easy to please. They were the outcasts of society, living on the fringe and aren’t easy to impress. No one knows how you did it. Maybe you were a little too nice to one of your fellow survivors in a trial, pushing them away from you while they were in frenzy or running back in to save a hooked friend. It doesn’t matter how you got their attention because once they have you, they aren’t letting you out of their sight. It will be the one trial where all four members of the legion are allowed on the map. They will run quickly, striking down everyone before moving to hook those they have to before staying close to you. They won’t let you heal though, they can’t have you running while the Entity collapses the realm. But don’t worry, they’ll be very gentle with you once you’re back away from the campfire.
Adiris - The Plague
She is a devoted priestess to a long dead god, pulled from the brink of the end of her life to serve a new deity in this forsaken realm. However, she sees her presence as a saving grace to free her obsession from the darkness of the trials and the wounds on your soul. She will be hesitant to make her choice, but she grows attached quickly to her favorite little survivor. She’ll make sure she chases you right into a fountain so you can purge the sickness. However, once it becomes clear that you are her choice, she moves quickly. She’ll allow her infection to spread to everyone but you, hooking them for her god before holding you in her ringed fingers and allowing you to breathe in her incense to rid yourself of the vapors and miasma. She’ll make sure you rest once you’re hers, don’t worry.
Danny Johnson - The Ghostface
He’s not as quick to get attached to the victims he often ruthlessly kills. He was willing to come to the Entity’s realm and scoffed at the offer of company. It takes a while for the loneliness to get to him. However, he always knew that you would be his first choice. You would always notice him, even when he blended into the dark grasses and trees. You always knew he was there. Were you watching him just like he was watching you? He often ended his games with you in his mori, keeping the pictures of you in his camera while you died as well as other choice photographs from the game. Eventually, he saw you begin to slow and grow lethargic in the endless death. He knew then it was time to take you once and for all, moving quickly over pallets to secure you somewhere while he killed every single person who thought you would die for them today. You were his.
The Demogorgon
A bloodthirsty creature pulled out of its realm to serve another. Always hungry but never being fed for anything that it craved, the human flesh would always disappear from its belly. The demogorgon doesn’t have any of the human emotions the other killers do, only the rage that fuels it. Pity the poor survivor the demogorgon will take on a whim, there will be nothing left in a fate worse than the Entity’s own realm.

Everyone has their own AUs that they like to play around with. For some reason the one that I’ve had stuck in my head for the longest time is this Western AU. Yellow is a sheriff, Blue is a wealthy widow/businesswoman, and both are in the pocket of railroad tycoon White Diamond and safeguard her business interests. Pink is White’s illegitimate daughter, sent away to be raised by Blue and Yellow. She and Pearl start sneaking out in disguise and eventually form the notorious Crystal Gang, led by the fearsome outlaw Rose Quartz.
The main problem with this AU is that I cannot draw hats, guns, or horses. (I am writing the fic though.)
