The Yatton Carrier (Somerset, c. 1874).
Country carriers had four main purposes: transporting goods from urban railheads to rural destinations, taking agricultural produce for sale to urban provision merchants, purchasing retail goods in towns and local villages, and taking passengers between the town and countryside.
The vans used by carriers generally had a flat roof with wooden rails, so goods could be carried on top if the van was full. Â They usually had two small wheels at the front and two larger wheels at the back, and were pulled by one or two horses.
