Yeah, that’s a bigass skull and crossbones flag on a US Navy boat this week. As one former submariner put it when asked about this photo, “we ... don’t exactly follow prize rules.” I.e., It’s a tradition for submariners to flaunt their piratical ways when returning home after a successful patrol. Back in the day, it was more actual technically-warcrimes piracy/privateering (some WWI British admiral threatened to hang any captured German submariners as pirates, the RN submariners said “Oh, we’re pirates, then? Okay,” and it became tradition), this boat’s just been up to shady spy stuff and not sinking ships.
Also anniversary of actual piracy against their government and all.
The USAF isn’t allowed to have fun anymore, but the navies of the world have always been on a longer leash/more quick to mutiny and harder to fight if they did, so they get to keep more of their un-PC traditions.
And given the scars on the sail, whatever they did, they probably earned it.
