It's kind of funny seeing people on Tumblr treat yank and Usamerican as slurs.
Yank is a slur for people from the USA, or the global north more generally, in the same way that cracker is a slur for white people. That is to say, it's an unkind thing to call someone, but if you feel attacked by it that says more about you than about the person saying it.
Usamerican is a term to denote that someone is from the USA, instead of one of the dozens of other countries in North, Central, and South America that are just as American as the USA. Calling it a slur has the exact same energy as Elon Musk saying cis is a slur. If you're from the USA and think Usamerican is a slur, get over yourself and learn that you're not always the default.
There is something so entertaining to me about exonyms having completely different meanings in the culture they are describing or just being confusing to natives.
Like, Americans tend to react in confusion to the term "Yank" or "Yankee" when it is applied to ALL Americans because we think of Yankees as like, New Yorkers.
