Your desk is a disaster, paper scraps everywhere , on the table, on the floor, stuck to the edges of things like theyβve been slowly multiplying. Torn newspaper clippings scattered between them. Most of them are about the same person, the same name circled again and again.
leon s. kennedy.
Every article says something different but also the same.
The man who saved civilians.
the governmentβs golden boy.
The DSOβs pride and joy.
Heroic headlines, blurry photos, praise stacked on praise.
Your fingers are tacky with drying glue, little strings of it clinging when you pull your hands apart. You're holding a cut-out photo of leon in your left hand , mid-action, gun raised, expression sharp.
You swipe glue across the back of it and press it carefully onto the page, another addition to the collection.
Your scrapbook is already crowded. Layers of newspaper clippings, leaked photos printed from somewhere you probably shouldnβt have gotten them from, scribbled notes, circles around locations heβs been spotted in, cities, buildings. dates, every piece of leon you could find, pressed into the paper.
.
You already broke into the DSO database, donβt ask how. That part isnβt important.
files flicker past your screen as you scroll, fast and impatient, folders opening and closing. Mission archives, deployment logs, redacted reports. You skim everything, hunting for one name.
A few minutes pass, maybe longer. At one point you get distracted, clicking through profiles of the agents heβs partnered with before, the female ones especially, studying their photos a little longer than necessary before closing the tabs again.
then finally.
there it is.
his name buried in the mission reports.
you open the files and scroll slower this time, reading through deployment locations, dates, summaries, cities youβve never been to. Places that look like hell even through the cold language of government paperwork.
Your eyes soften as you read.
He keeps getting sent to places like this, over and over again, infected zones, biohazard incidents, classified operations where people donβt come back the same, if they come back at all.
It almost feels unfair.
if only you could just⦠take him out of all that.
somewhere safe.
maybe your place.
It's quiet here, nothing like the places they keep sending him to. He could finally sleep without alarms and gunfire. You could cook for him, make sure he eats something warm for once.
He wouldnβt have to keep saving everyone else for a while.
he could just rest.
.
Maybe it was a bad idea.
or maybe it was a brilliant one!!
Either way, yesterday you may or may not have βaccidentallyβ bumped into Leon on the street. Quick apology, a nervous smile, the kind strangers give each other before moving on.
Nothing suspicious.
Just enough time to press a tiny GPS tracker into the lining of his jacket.
Not that anyone needs to know that part.
Today heβs off duty.
The little blinking dot on your screen had you practically vibrating with relief, no missions, no biohazards, no classified nightmares waiting for him today.
just⦠Him<333
Which is how you end up sitting in a restaurant across the room from him. Far enough away that you wonβt be noticed, close enough that you can still see him clearly.
And there he is.
Actually eating.
Not rushing, just sitting there with a plate of warm food, sleeves pushed up slightly, head tilted down while he eats like a normal person. It's strange seeing him like this. You didnβt realize how tense your shoulders were until they finally relaxed.
Good.
He's taking care of himself⦠kind of? For a moment, though, he pauses. His fork slows.
Leon's brows pull together slightly as he glances up, that instinct kicking in, the feeling of someone watching him. His eyes scanning across the restaurant.
You freeze
He looks around the room for a second longer.
Then, apparently deciding itβs nothing, he exhales quietly and goes back to his meal.
.
Leonβs apartment??? oh, goody. You definitely shouldnβt be here. You told yourself that at least three times while unlocking the window and slipping inside earlier, not breaking in, obviously. justβ¦ visitinnβ¦temporarily.
The first thing you did was sweep the place.
not for dust, for cameras corners of the ceiling, vents, smoke detectors, behind picture frames. You checked everything carefully until you were satisfied there were no hidden CCTV feeds or security surprises waiting to catch you.
Once that was done, you finally looked around properly, and yeahβ¦ with how busy he is, itβs obvious he doesnβt exactly have time to keep the place spotless.
A few dishes in the sink, laundry sitting in a basket. dust collecting on surfaces that probably havenβt been wiped down in a while.
You clasp your hands together, smiling to yourself.
βDon't worry, Leon.
I'm here to save the day!!β
Hours pass.
Music playing quietly from your phone while you move around the apartment like you belong there.
laundry first. his clothes tumble around in the washer, and when you pull them out later you⦠accidentally pause for a bit. okay, maybe longer than a bit.
his jacket.
his shirts. The faint smell of his cologne still clinging to the fabric. You bury your face in it for a momentβ¦or thirty minutes.
After that itβs the kitchen, the plate he used for breakfast gets washed and set neatly on the rack, counters wiped down, trash taken out, the place slowly starts lookingβ¦ lived in, but clean and
comfortable.
Like someone actually takes care of it. By the time youβre done, the apartment feels warmer somehow, your energy finally runs out though. So you flop down onto the couch, stretching out with a satisfied sigh, just a quick nap, just for a little while.
You curl slightly into the cushions, eyes drifting closed, imagining something soft and impossible Leon sitting beside you, an arm around you while you sleep, warm and steady.
Safe.
Youβll leave before he comes home, of course you will, and later, when Leon finally unlocks his apartment door after another long day, he might pause in the entryway, glancing around. The place looksβ¦ cleaner. The dishes are done. his laundry folded, the apartment smells faintly like detergent instead of dust.
He frowns slightly, running a hand through his hair.
ββ¦did i clean this yesterdayβ¦?β
.
China again. Another city reduced to chaos, another mission with Leon right in the middle of it. You watch everything from a distance youβve gotten far too used to and sheβs there.
helena.
You feel your nose wrinkle immediately, jealousy bubbling up in your chest before you can stop it. The way leon talks to her, the way he keeps glancing back to make sure sheβs still there, still safe.
βyou good?β
βnice shot.β
βstay behind me.β
You roll your eyes so hard it almost hurts.
Of course he says things like that.
Of course he protects her like that.
Thatβs just who Leon is, the hero, the protector, always putting himself between danger and everyone else.
But stil. It doesnβt mean you have to like it.
And then things get worse.
because she shows up.
ada.
You feel the irritation spike instantly as Leon steps between her and chris, that familiar stubborn tone in his voice when he starts defending her.
βsheβs a key witness.β
βwe need her alive.β
blah, blah, blah.
Youβve seen enough of the reports, the files, the patterns. Ada appearing and disappearing whenever it suits her. Manipulating him. Using that soft look he always gets around her.
Leon knows she isnβt trustworthy.
He has to knowβ¦so why does he keep choosing her side? You cross your arms, watching from afar with a quiet huff.
because honestlyβ¦if he needs someone loyal, someone who actually cares, someone who would never betray him

βIT IS AN UNDENIABLY BAD DAY. For Aether, at least. It is truly the worst day ever. He couldn't believe that so much could happen in a single day, that even him who's always so calm and bright would be overwhelmed to the point he disregard his health and any thoughts of going back home.
Funny how the sky seems to know he has a worst day, and it's intention might be nothing else but to further add into his suffering as it chooses that it's the best day to make it rain.
And just like his mood, the clouds were dark, rumbling with sound of thunder as it prepared for the heavy downpour that's about to happen.
'What to do?'
Aether couldn't described what he feels at the moment. His eyes were blank, but it has the obvious emotion of sadness and frustration. What do you expect? Compared to his twin, Lumine, who's composed and more matureβ him, on the other hand, is more emotional. He couldn't get himself to cheer up at the moment because it's like the things he worked so hard to do crumble today just like that, without any warnings.
As he sat there in an the abandoned playground near his house, he felt the first drop of rain his his forehead. Quickly like the pouring rain that drops down on the land, his head, too, lowered down as he close his eyes, trying not to let the tears fall. Tears that build out of frustration, emotions that he's unable to manage properly obviously got him overwhelmed.
He was sitting in the end of the slide, his knees bent upwards while resting his elbows on it.
He tried not to think of it. He really tried.
But it seems like trying won't do. Because like they said, the more you try not to think of something, the more your mind plays negatively with you, actually bringing up the thoughts you wouldn't want to have at the moment.
That's exactly what happened.
Aether couldn't prevent his own thoughts from bringing back the earlier situation he was in. Voices of many people, mixed up negative situations and the possibilities all drilled into his mind like pins and needles with the sole intention to hurt.
βSorry, I woke up late so I didn't manage to make breakfast, I'm really sorry.β
βTsk, the big-shot of Teyvat Academy has arrives.β
βIt appears your partner ditch you. Although it is not your fault, I'm afraid I cannot give you a passing gradeβ considering that the project that is shared between you and your partner has been split in half. Meet me at my office later, then we'll discussed this. For now, go back on your seat. β
βWhat theβ are you blind!? Look what you did, you spilled a soup on my shirt! Do you know how much this cost?!β
βWhat do you think you're doing holding my girlfriend like that? You want a fight? I'll give you one!β
βMr.Lan, Mr.Aether! In my office, now!β
βYou guys are having a detention after school, don't even dare to skip it or else..!β
βI hate to say this, but I can't have an employer who's always late. I'm sorry Aether, buy you don't need to come back here tommorow. β
βYou're fired. β
The chains of negativity linked one after another, and now it was strong enough to bound him. Aether couldn't help but tremble in the cold, clutching his head when it started to feel painful.
He couldn't help but cry despite not wanting to.
Never did he expect to face something like this. Yes, he expected bad luck to come his way like a falling meteor, but he never would've thought it's actually a meteor shower headed his way.
Aether squeeze his eyes closed, wiping the tears in his eyes only to realized thatβ his face were dripping with water. No. In fact, his whole body is already soaked wet due to the heavy rain.
He was about to curse loudly and be mad when all of a sudden, amidst the sound of the strong rain droplets, he heard a confused him and a calm, collected voice.
βYou don't look okay.βsaid the voice, and it startled Aether.
However, he didn't look up. His eyes snapped open but he stilled, glaring at the ground with a frustrated frown. He was already driven by his overwhelming emotions, which is all a piled up negative feelings that he couldn't help but grit his teeth and snapped at the person who dared interrupt his plan to scream and vent his feelings.
βWho are you? Why do you even care? β he asked. Clearly he didn't recognize the voice, so obviously it's a stranger. He refuses to look at them, however, still having a slight sanity to remain his glare focus on the ground instead of a living, breathing person that has emotion.
But shockingly, instead of being offended after being snapped at like that, the stranger let out an amused chuckle.
Aether could feel the rain suddenly stop, or that something is blocking the rain above him, before he heard the stranger again, strangely speaking in an amused tone.
βAh, you look really cute.β
βWhat the...?β
After that, Aether who's been stunned at the answer of this stranger couldn't help but look up, and his eyes widened. Pair of indigo eyes stared back at his own golden ones, and Aether clearly saw amusement and worry lacing in those eyes.
The amusement, understandable. Even though Aether doesn't have an idea why the stranger is amused, he clearly heard the amusement in her tone before so it's no surprise to see amusement in her eyes. But why worry, though? Why would a stranger, wo he clearly doesn't know, worry about him?
Aether thought, perhaps he knew her from somewhere and just forgot? But then when he examined her face, he couldn't help but be in a state of awestruck.
He could described her face in one word; Beautiful.
In a sentence; An angel in a mortal body.
It's a given that Aether, who attended a famous academy, already met many people with unmatched beauty (and him being one of them), but he had never seen someone as beautiful as the one standing in front of him, smiling gently like an angel as she shared her umbrella with him.
Clearly, Aether has a sharp memory. He wouldn't forget easily, and given that this person has a face like this that obviously scream beauty, it's impossible for him to forget it.
So, it's confirmed he didn't know this person.
Who might she be?
βTake a picture, that would last.β
β....pardon?β
The stranger smiled at him, and Aether could tell that she once again felt amused.
She pointed at her face with a free hand, her smile serene and genuine as she spoke unhurried. βI said; You can take a picture, if you want. You're staring.β
Aether was like βOh...β when he heard that, but the when it fully processed in his mind his face turned vermillion as he gape, speechless.
βIβ I uhm...apologize.β
A hearty laughter escaped the stranger's lips. βIt's not a big deal. I'm just teasing you.βthen she reach her hand all of a sudden, causing Aether to flinch back when she reach for his hand. The stranger paused, but said nothing and quickly pulled his hand. To his surprise, the stranger gave the handle of the umbrella to him.
βHere. Take this and go back home. Your sister is probably worried about you.βis what she said, before she winked and took a step back.
Her indigo eyes that exude worry previously, now holds a hint of relief. She flashed him a gentle smile, as though she's glad that he was now being shielded by the heavy pouring of rain, clearly disregarding her own health just for him, a complete stranger. It was suspicious, but the genuine concern her eyes have for him made Aether unable to react quickly as he watch he hand moved to cover her head by pulling the hood of her jacket, then waving him good bye as she runs away.
Aether's jaw dropped. βWhat just... happened?β he asked himself, still in shocked. Then, he look at the umbrella he's holding and now, many questions appeared in his head one after another.
But the question he really wanted to know the answer of isβ
When someone who only knew how to scheme ended up falling for an innocent man, the innocent is bound to lose- for darkness always surrounds the light that shines.
