For anime fans who don’t like baseball, Oblivion Battery does way more bad than good. Hell, even baseball fans might not be able to get through the first ten minutes of this show. I certainly wouldn’t have continued if not for my life’s work of watching every baseball show this medium has to offer.

But yeah, this show starts out rough. The character design is very odd, the setup is obvious, and Kei might be the single worst protagonist in the history of sports anime. It takes a while to get better—too long for reasonably-inclined viewers.

But it does get better in a few key ways. For one, new characters add dimension and bring sincere angst to a critically under-examined pressure-cooker of youth baseball. Secondly, the jokes start flying and landing a little more than midway through the series, and the pace only picks up from there.

Most important, however, are the baseball scenes. Against all odds—against every bad decision that went into this show—they’re fucking phenomenal. The details of the equipment, the subtleties of swings and windups, the beauty of a diamond—it’s all there, and it’s all gorgeous. It is without question the most realistic depiction of kokoyakyu I have ever seen in anime (minus the hair, of course), and probably the most beautiful baseball anime ever produced.
