“Maëva.” A hand shook your shoulder relentlessly, rousing you from your sleep. “Maë, please. You need to wake up now.”
“Chan?” With your eyes still closed, you missed the look of distress on your husband’s face. “Are you having trouble sleeping again?”
Chan smiled slightly at your automatic reaction, the stress pulsing through his veins not allowing him to show any further emotions. “I’m fine, mon amour, it’s not for me today. You need to get to Queen Lalani straight away.”
Hearing the urgency in his voice, you shot up straight away. “What’s wrong? Is it the baby? But it’s too early, she’s only five months along-” you were quickly cut off by Chan’s hand over your mouth.
“Jagi, I need you to calm down for me, okay? Can you do that?” Seeing your nod, he removed his hand slowly. “There’s nothing wrong with the queen or the baby, they're fine for now. But I need your help.”
“Okay, but what’s going on? Why are you acting so panicked?”
Chan sighed before starting. “Remember how Lalani was previously engaged to Prince Gabriel from Nihilo?”
You shivered merely upon hearing that name. Having been raised with the queen from infancy, you knew all about him. Her parents had been in discussion with the king and queen of Nihilo in order to arrange their engagement, one that Lalani was fervently opposed to. However, as if destined by fate itself, she met and fell in love with then Crown Prince Minho. The rest was history as her parents realised a marriage alliance with the Kingdom of Fidelis was better. As Lalani’s first lady, you had been appointed her chaperone, while Chan as head of the guard was Minho’s chaperone. That was how you’d met and slowly fell in love.
Prince Gabriel, however, was not pleased by this turn of events. Being used to having whatever he wanted since he was small, he had foolishly challenged Minho to a duel, even though Minho was known across the lands for being a skilled swordsman. Having been humiliated by his loss, he’d sworn his revenge and had since disappeared.
Putting your locs up in a bun with a practised motion, you signalled to Chan to continue. “What did the spoilt brat do now?” Seeing Chan’s reticence to tell you, you clasped his hands in your smaller ones, rubbing them to comfort him. “Please tell me. You can’t ask me for help and then leave me in the dark.”
Chan kept his eyes fixed on your hands as he continued. “It seems that he has raised a militia of sorts within his father’s army. As usual, his parents allowed him to do as he wished. Amour…” Chan squeezed your hands as he looked into your eyes. “Amour, we just received word that Gabriel is on his way with his army.”
Your breath cut short. “He…” you stammered as you tried to take in that information. “He’s on his way here? Right now?”
Chan nodded. “We knew this was an eventual possibility, so we made sure to keep our ears on the ground in case of any threat. But with Lalani’s situation, this complicates things a lot further.”
“The baby…” you gasped. At the thought of your best friend and her unborn child being in danger, your body was taken over by unbridled anger. “Chan, we need to get them out of here.”
“Exactly.” Taking you in his arms, he carried on. “That’s what I need you to do for me. We’re already arranging transportation to leave. I need you to go to her room, get her and take her to the stables through the secret stairway. Is that okay?”
Lifting your head to look at him you nodded. “I’ll go get her now. Promise me you’ll be careful as well.”
Chuckling softly, he took your face in his warm hands and softly kissed your forehead. “Thank you mon amour. It’ll just be like what we’ve practised, okay?” Pecking your lips quickly, Chan motioned towards the door. “You’d better get going now. I’ll meet you at the stables.
The next few minutes passed in a blur. Adrenaline pulsed through your veins as you woke Lalani, rushing her out of bed with an abbreviated version of what Chan had told you, the feel of her clammy hand in yours a distant sensation in your distressed state. It was only once you had arrived at the stables and caught sight of Chan and Minho waiting for you with a prepared carriage that you felt that you could breathe. As they quickly ushered you into the carriage, you were surprised to see Changbin, Chan’s second in command, and Prince Felix, Minho’s younger brother, in the seats you’d expected Chan and Minho to have.
Lalani was the first to break the silence. “You’re staying behind, aren’t you?”
“Yes.” Minho replied shortly, before pulling himself together. “We need to make sure that everyone who needs to be evacuated gets to go. We…” he choked on emotion. “I needed to be sure you managed to leave first, in case any suspicions arose.”
“And after that?” Lalani persisted. “What happens once everyone has been evacuated?”
“We fight.” Minho answered straightforwardly. “This is my home, no coward like him will take that from me. “Plus,” he reached into the carriage and laid a hand lovingly on her stomach. “I need to make sure that you have a home to come back to. A safe home for you and our blessing.”
Lalani simply placed her hand on top of his. “Then you’d better win, Lee Minho. I’ll hold you to that.”
“Chan?” Your voice wavered, a lone tear making its way down your face.
Chan wiped your tear away gently. “If I asked you to leave Lalani and stay here with me, would you?” Knowing what he meant, you shook your head. Chan was the love of your life, but Lalani was your best friend, your sister by choice. You couldn’t leave her in her time of need. It was the same for Chan and Minho, they had been raised together. The palace was also Chan’s home, and you knew he’d fight for it alongside Minho to his last dying breath. “Believe me, Maë,” he continued, “I don’t want to leave you. If I could, you'd always be by my side, amour. The only thing bringing my comfort is knowing you are with others I trust. I know,” he held your hands tightly, at a loss for words, “I know that we will find our way back to each other. I won’t give up on us. I refuse to.”
“Good.” You gripped his hands just as tightly. “You’d better make your way back, Christopher Bang. That’s an order.”
Laughing at the use of his full name, he let go of one of your hands to jokingly salute you. “Understood ma’am!” As a more sombre look clouded his face, he lifted your left hand and kissed it right above your wedding ring. “That’s a promise, Maëve Bang. You of all people should know that I don’t take those lightly.”
Overcome by emotions, you simply placed your lips on his, pouring all your emotions into that last kiss.
“Chan.” Minho tapped his back. “They have to leave now.”
Chan quickly pressed his forehead against yours. “I’ll be back, okay Maë? I’ll be back amour.” Leaning out of the carriage, he turned to Changbin. “Do you swear to protect them?”
“With my life, Captain.” Changbin replied swiftly.
“Good.” With one last poignant look, Chan signalled for the coachman to start driving.
Lalani and you could only cry in each other’s arms as you left the only place you’d ever truly called home.
