It should now be well established that Elon Musk has turned Twitter into a right-wing fever dream in which Democrats rarely win elections legitimately, Donald Trump is popular, and good, red-blooded Americans have bailed on the Democratic Party. But in the now-aborted Senate campaign of Graham Platner, we got a window into how the platform also serves as a reality distortion field for Democrats.

The leaks are such a letdown that people would rather have the Scottish twins canonically scrapped than have them return... well, this is how I see it
So I've been contemplating the enshittification of Twitter, which as it stand now is near unusable thanks to the influence of bots on the algorithm
It's no longer run by the user interaction and is instead being dictated by whatever AI is running it and the influence of the proliferation of bot accounts, and is therefore no longer reliable in terms of user interactions or usable metrics
Now BlueSky has been a good alternative, however there is the explore feed to consider, it doesn't have one
Most online users are used to some type of explore feed on social media to help them find trending topics, and the modding on the site can also lead to mod bias interfering with what people see when following tags, just like bots do, which can also lead to potential problems
To be honest an explore feed is needed, but this is also what leads to the influencing of other peoples algorithms and enables strategic manipulation to occur
But......it's still needed.......so how to manage it?
BlueSky is heavily anti bot, and so far they seem to be doing alright managing against it
So how do you introduce something like an explore feed to the site while also being able to mitigate the bots attempting to takeover control of the user algorithms?
My thoughts:
capping the amount of influence that interaction with others has to reduce the effects and fight against long term manipulation using thresholds to account for sudden trending activity, perhaps even have the threshold apply to topics the hit a certain level to allow them to run their course without having a long-term effect on the individual user algorithm
excluding viral content from being included in generating future 'interest' results attempting to restore the nature of truly user interest generated viral content
instigating a reset timer so that the influence generated by the explore feed is able to be removed
the reset timer could also be used to combat the effects of bots when an explore feed is introduced and enable collection and analysis of data to help identify them better
having the reset button available to the user to use if they foray to far from what they want could also be useful, and give the user a sense of control over their algorithm
make the entire list of above options user opt-in and let them choose based on their own experiences
