Truth be told, she wasn’t all that sure how it had started. Only that it had started. And what had started as seemingly innocent flirting and fun and pretending that he couldn’t see into her bedroom through his window had turned into something a little bit less covert. But he was friends with her mom, Matt’s dad, and he was adored by pretty much everyone in the entire town. Which meant that keeping the whole thing between them under wraps was impossible, especially when he was coming over to meet her mom for council meetings or when she was over at Matt’s for study sessions. Or when they crossed paths at Matt’s football games after she was done cheering at halftime. He was always there to pick Matt up after practices, and she told herself that she’d stop thinking he hung around just to see her in her uniform. But truth be told, she’d sometimes purposefully not change out of it, just in the hopes to see him waiting there in the parking lot, car always parked closer to hers than anything out.
Sure enough, he was there when she strode out, her lips instantly curling into a smile when she saw him. “Hey, Mr. Saltzman.” her voice was bright, cheery as she popped the hood of her trunk, just a spot or two away from his car. A few of the girls on the cheer team were still leaving, on the other side of the parking lot but, still close enough that she was trying to keep the whole thing subtle enough not to raise suspicion. Caroline tossed her bag into her trunk before shutting it, moving around to lean against the side of her car facing him. “Matt’s not out of practice for another hour and half. They’re running long today.”
