Look what i found in the drafts

“James?”

“What’s up, Pads?”

“Mind hiding my wand from me?” Sirius holds it out in one shaking palm. “And uh- broom too. It’s just, I can’t go back there without them so…”

James grabs the wand before Sirius has a chance to pull away, his arms dropping like a stone when it is taken.

“Course, yeah.” He pockets it to hide it in his parents’ bedroom later. “Do you want me to sleep in your room tonight?”

“No,” he hums, exhausted. “I’ll probably sneak into yours to find them.”

“Ah, right. But uh-” James breaks off awkwardly. There’s not a lot he could say that Sirius would actually hear right now and the longer he waits, the more suffocating the silence gets. “-You’re doing good, Pads. I’m proud of you.”

The smile that pulls across his face is enough to break James’ heart, like a joke he’s playing along with.
