bg3 hot take: wyll ravengard is NOT lawful good and i will die on this hill.
polite, sincere, gentle != lawful good.
he wants to be lawfulâŚbut he demonstrably follows his conscience over systems or rules whenever they conflict. see: the kagha dialogue where he calls her a demon for punishing arabella, the eagerness to kill the entire goblin camp, the fact that he sold his soul at 17 instead of relying on the Flaming Fist or other âofficialâ defenses to protect the city, + more. he suggests drowning gortash in his own blood. he is a ok with ignoring procedure as long as it aligns with what he personally thinks someone deserves.
the man is neutral or chaotic good.
thinking about the fact that itâs so easy to forget how old wyll actually is in game.
in game, he carries himself with the wisdom and experience of someone much older. and you forget, little by little, that heâs only 24. that itâs only been seven years since he was pacted to Mizora at 17.
at seventeen years old, wyll lost everything that usually defines a young man, in one day. his soul, sold to mizora for the safety of his city. his autonomy, now on a devilish leash. the wholeness of his body, a blade ruining his right eye. his only family, who disowned him. his home, where he was banished from. his entire future and place in the world. at 17, wyll, a child, was homeless, recently half blind, and absolutely, completely alone in the world except for the devil who owned him.
and then we meet him at 24, in game. heâs made a name for himself, because he had to. because there was no space left for just âwyll ravengardâ to exist. and you easily forget, with his courtly charm and scars of experience, that he is only a few years from adolescence. you forget that heâs never gotten to just be a young man. you forget that at 18, 19, 20, he was bleeding for the sake of protecting others instead of figuring out who he is. he never had time to grieve any of it.
and thatâs, I think, one of the most under-recognized tragedies of his character (though there are many), because the game never gives him that space. he is a young man stitched back together by duty, holding on to what he can do, how he can serve, because thereâs little else he has left thatâs his. and itâs never touched upon. he remains the blade of frontiers the entire time youâre with him, and you only get tantalizing hints of the aching, exhausted boy underneath. of the rich character he might have been if the writers let his mask slip just a bit. thereâs so much room for exploration in his character even in the rewrite, and itâs just never explored.
JUST PURCHASED A PIECE OF WYLL MERCH WITHOUT MIZORA ON IT LETS FUCKING GO
Minthara and Gale is an extremely underrated sibling dynamic, tbh.
Gale is Absolutely Convinced he can win her over with the next story, by being empathetic and reasonable. Minthara refers to him only as âthe wizardâ, and tells him in Menzoberranzan, parents kill the third born son as he is âuseless even for breedingâ and then tells him he has the aura of a third child about him. This absolutely does not sway his resolve to befriend her.
Their dynamic is so entertaining.

taking a nap isnât enough I need to read another fic where gale dekarios pines hopelessly and is eventually kissed senseless
so cruelly ironic for Havok/Alex Summers to spend his entire comic runtime trying to convince people he isnât just âCyclopsâs brotherâ, and then the second heâs presented as his own character (unrelated to Scott) in X-Men: First Class, they introduce Scott in the next movie and immediately kill Alex off arbitrarily đ
instantly relegated back to âthe less important Summersâ in the first half hour of the sequel. poor Alex.
hey remember that one post about characters who only think theyâre valuable as a shield for others?
remember how wyll sacrificed his freedom for the rest of his life in exchange for the safety of baldurâs gate?
remember how wyll, an exile of his own city and family, lived nomadically for years, traveling the Sword Coast saving others?
remember how easy it is to make wyll realize karlach is innocent and spare her, even though he knows he will suffer greatly for it?
remember how wyll makes no regretful or bitter comment about his choice to save karlach, even when he is tortured in the hells and transformed into a devil?
remember how wyll still is willing to sacrifice the rest of his life in service to mizora to save the life of his father, who disowned and exiled him?
yeah.
