Wyndcliffe by Joseph Via Flickr: Wyndcliffe is an abandoned mansion in the town of Rhinebeck, New York. The scale of this place is absolutely enormous, and its style seems different from any of the other Hudson River estates. It inspired the phrase "keeping up with the Joneses" and is featured on the cover of a book on American ruins. Despite that fact, getting here turned into quite an ordeal.

The last people to live in Wyndcliffe fled over 50 years ago.
The castle was built by Edith Wharton’s aunt. Edith thought that it was gloomy and pretentious, and she accused her aunt of building this Gotho-Norman castle just to compete with the wealthy Jones family, who had built another mansion along the Hudson River nearby. Edith coined the phrase “Keeping up with the Joneses” to describe Wyndcliffe.
