#wwdc 2011

Scioccato, come gran parte della rete, dalle dimissioni di Steve Jobs dalla carica di CEO di Apple, ho fatto un passo indietro fino a qualche mese fa, cercando di contestualizzare il passato nell'ottica di questa notizia. 

Ho riguardato interamente il keynote del WWDC 2011 e queste sono le mie sensazioni. 

Steve Jobs è debole, una voce rotta a mala pena esce dalla sua bocca. La platea lo accoglie, come al solito, con calore ed affetto consapevole della sua salute precaria, guardandolo come si fa con una persona cara all'ospedale, col quel sorriso finto e malinconico che lascia intendere la gravità della situazione. Probabilmente sa che questo è il suo ultimo keynote, il pubblico lo intuisce ma non vuole crederci. Quel colosso di intelligenza, creatività e sensibilità nel corpo esile di un vecchietto racconta i progressi della sua azienda creata dal nulla, ora la più valutata al mondo. 

Chiama sul palco Phil Schiller e poi Scott Forstall. Break.

I due portano una ventata di leggerezza: Phil cerca subito di scuotere la platea in preda ai pensieri sulla salute dell'allora CEO.

Come on, energy in the room. This is the developer conference!

Poco dopo presenta il nuovo OS Lion per i computer Macintosh, ne descrive le feature più importanti e, accompagnato da un boato, è sempre lui ad annunciarne il prezzo di soli 29$. Proprio come faceva Steve.

Scott Forstall introduce il discorso gesticolando ampiamente come un rapper ed esclamando:

Welcome, I'm here to tell you about iOS 5

Probabilmente la recente frequentazione con 50 Cent lo ha influenzato più del previsto.

Scott, nonostante questo, è una forza della natura, sicuro di sé, scherza col pubblico, lo coinvolge e annuncia l'importante aggiornamento per gli iDevices.

Per un attimo il pubblico si dimentica di Steve Jobs, è la nuova Apple, giovane, fresca probabilmente meno profetica ma che sta in piedi sulle proprie gambe, forte e consapevole dei valori insegnati dal padre. 

Steve ritorna sul palco per parlare di iCloud; l'idee, l'entusiasmo e l'ironia sono quelle di un tempo ma manca la forza e la lucidità per raccontarle alla sua maniera unica. Ad incantare non è più ciò che sta presentando ma l'uomo che combatte contro i limiti del proprio corpo. Sembra che un soffio di vento potrebbe spazzarlo via. La presentazione si conclude con la classica "one more thing". 

At the recent Apple Worldwide Developer Conference 2011 (WWDC) Steve Jobs and team announced some major innovations—a couple of which will be game changers. This is part 2 of 3.

 iOS 5

As usual, they start off with boasting.  And they have mind-boggling numbers. iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) combined has 44% of mobile OS Market.  There have been 425,000 apps released in three years, 14 billion download, etc etc.  They highlight some of the sexier apps: HBO to go, apps for pilots to fly routes, for doctors to do medical things, etc.

For developers iOS 5 has 1,500 APIs.  [If you’re not a developer why do you care?  APIs are the interfaces that give developers the tools to make nifty new apps for YOU.]

Features:

Notifications & notifications center many apps provide notifications which range from very  helpful (calendar reminders, flight alerts, SMS and voice mail notifications) to potentially irritating.  The reminders can be intrusive as one uses the iOS device for more and more, and it can be difficult to track back to the in-app notification.  This will unify notifications into a central place and make them addressable from there. Also notifications will be relegated to little alert sign at top of screen instead of rudely interrupting front and center. [How did we manage without this?]

News stand: will begin to treat your media publication subscriptions the way they should be. They will be unified in their own area [I made a folder, this is better], automatically download new issues for subscriptions in the background [I’m tired of watching status bars and getting on the plane only to realize I forgot to download the latest].  There are elegant touches—the publication icon shows the cover image of that issue.  This is surprisingly useful [like their calendar icon and so much more]

Twitter integration—single sign-on for third-party apps, integrated into Apple apps, using location—youtube, locations from maps etc.  [This is an important salvo in the wars for domination and a snub to Facebook] Twitter photos can be added to anything etc.

Safari—[Bragging, 2/3 of mobile web browser market. They open-sourced and it’s used for Androids, more market share.  A bunch of new features:

READER: very cool—assumes you want to read the story you are reading, fills the page, puts multipage into one. Resizes, works on iphone and ipad.  Also you can now mail story contents, not just link.

Reading list (like dropbox) add stories to store and read later. Syncs across iOS devices

Full tabbed browsing for Safari on iPad

REMINDERS: supports static lists, time associated, recurring, geo lists.  Searchable, will sync with iCal and with Outlook on Windows using exchange

CAMERA: iPhone 4 has one of the best cameras on a mobile phone, and also one of the most popular over all (Flickr). Some new features:

Lock screen shortcut [very nice] it’s thought through. 

Volume up to take picture [this is big]

grid line [yawn]

pinch to zoom

auto exposure/focus lock

Editing on phone/pad (redeye removal, one-click enhance)

MAIL:

Rich text formatting,

Indentation

Address dragging

Flagging

Advanced search for messages on phone and on server

Swipe to inbox [simple intuitive gestures, but it’s the sort of thing that can be a tipping point]

More support for enterprise customers: support for SMIME, encrypted email

KEYBOARD: Multitouch for people who type with thumbs—the keyboard will now be able to split and be positioned flexibly on the screen to allow for typing with thumbs.  This will be persistent for every app

PC FREE: This is the post PC world.  Enabling over the air setup and activation so that iOS device can be the only device. Software updates over the air.  Again, delta updates only instead of entire OS. Various tasks that were necessary on PC are now on phone: photo editing, calendars, etc.  “If you want to cut the cord you can”

GAME CENTER: Networking stuff, downloading, support for turn-based games in the OS.

iMESSAGE: SMS is fine but iPad and iPod are not included.  Now launching new service for all iOS customers.  Features include: delivery and read receipts, typing indication, pushed to all devices [danger philanderers!] Supported over 3G and Wifi with non-intrusive notifications.

Plus 200 other new user features—airplay mirroring (not just the media but the screen), iTunes ringtone store, wifi sync to iTunes, improved offline mail support, “new ipad music app”, typing shortcuts, multitasking gestures (for switching between apps).  Developer tools & new SDK and APIs
