39: survival/wilderness fic + 66: “it’s not you it’s my enemies” ficyou know what I’m gonna take a bit of a different take on this. because in this case, gon is an up-and-coming drummer who, although he grew up in the tropics, is currently working in a snowy mountainous country. for one, he owes his friend kurapika a favor, and a winter in the cold didn’t seem too bad at first. he’s never done that before! and he gets to play for a wide variety of audiences in a wide variety of shows. just because he’s more a rock drummer doesn’t mean he can’t also appreciate funk or jazz or disco. 

he is very aware of kurapika’s connections. he’s also aware that, by openly associating with kurapika, it marks him as being of that part of the underworld, at least by association. gon doesn’t mind. he’s done his share of stupid when he was a teenager (not least why he owes kurapika more than a favor, but kurapika nearly refused to take any repayment at all for saving his life, so gon will do everything he can), and at the ripe old age of 23, he’s ready to just enjoy playing the drums and seeing new places. he was never interested in finding ging necessarily, but he wanted to find ging’s music, the tapes and A/V recordings and barely-remembered humming scattered around the world. 

and if kurapika needs him to sneak into the lockbox of the mansion where he’s currently playing a gig on drums for a jazz trio, steal a strange box, and ruin the mansion’s security--well. gon’s really done worse. at least this time he didn’t need to shoot anyone--

and then someone tries to shoot him. so gon bails out the window and books it.

he probably should have grabbed a thicker coat. and a gun. aunt mito would be so disappointed.

he loses his pursuer and ducks back to the mansion, half-frozen and phone dead, and runs right into the trio’s pianist, a highly accomplished musician named killua zoldyck who is much too good to be playing a tiny gig in the middle of the frozen nowhere. and then, just when they’re both figuring out that 1: gon’s a sneakthief working for the mob, 2: killua was the one who tried to shoot him, and 3: someone else is after kurapika’s box, another person tries to shoot both of them.

so gon has to survive the frozen winter, enemies after kurapika’s mysterious box, killua’s indecision about killing him or just declaring the mission a wash, and his own curiosity. all the while, killua’s own history in music and murder is coming out in bits and pieces, and gon’s mistakes as a teenager start surfacing in the form of whoever’s trying to kill both him and killua.

“how did his character become a fan favorite” well. i mean we know that folks like a bland tortured soul to project things onto….. might have something to do with it

he WHAT now

the first ten minutes or so were just a dude summarizing the things that happened in the first episode of MC without offering commentary or anything, which was fairly boring, but I was willing to roll with it.  

I think maybe it was supposed to have something to do with nen sometimes continuing after death, like Chrollo (i think?) talked about during Yorkshin, and Pitou’s Terpsichora continuing to move her body. but it wasn’t really EXPLAINED, just kinda implied, so we may never know for sure. :T

ging explicitly states that kite has a special ability that’s supposed to kick in when (or right before) he dies, so i think it’s different than nen that persists after death due to extreme emotions, since in those cases the ability is working exactly like before, except possibly even more powerful because of the dead user’s pure emotions powering the ability
