The Decay of Lazarus
“I’m dead, I really am dead.” Lifting his cold hands, he removed the white sheets, dragging his lifeless body from underneath them. He stopped.
“Oh woe is me, I’m dead!” He let out a soft laughter; his breaths slipped away, vanishing into thin air. As if they were never there. As if he were dead.
He paced around the room. One step, two steps, three steps.
“I wonder, when shall my body begin to decay?”
He looked out at the grey sky, the damp city, with its foreboding bricks and mocking concrete and bitter crowds of people.
“I’m dead. Is that true? Am I really?” he mused.
Wheels squeaked, doors went a’knocking, and the sound of grunts and clearing of throats echoed through the ominous hallways. It was cold.
“I suppose I am dead.”
His body was numb. Of course, he had lost all of his blood after all. He no longer had a heart, no lungs, no intestines, no kidneys. No nothing. He is nothing. No no no, no longer an is. He’s a was.
“No.”
He let out a blood curling scream. He screamed and screamed and screamed-- his pupils, once full and lifeless, were now dilated and fearful! He screamed and scratched and knocked at the door, and kicked and screamed and oh, how he hollered!
“No! I cannot be dead! Oh, Lord! Forgive me Father, for I have sinned! No, don’t let me die! Oh please, oh please, oh please! I didn’t mean to! Forgive me!”
The door burst open. Time stood still, as if it too, were dead.
They grabbed him by the arms. He struggled. He continued to kick and scream and shout, trying to fight them off, cursing them, crying, and shrieking. Those evil men in white coats-- damn them.
He felt it sink in through his skin. He could not tell if he was paralyzed in fear or if he was transcending to the above, at last. He felt his soul drifting away from his body, a humming noise. All noises began to fade away. All was dark.
“Just another day,” mumbled a voice.
“Oh it’s just another day!” chimed the other one.
