This is the start of chapter 39: Risk.
-----------------
Orin had picked up a single occupant, simple, low floating bedframe and new mattress the day before while he was in town, turning the laundry room into an impromptu guest bedroom that Yune now inhabited. Although Jeina had given the upstairs room to the boys, both voted to forfeit it to the princess.Â
He tread carefully through the house while everyone slept, with one mission in mind. He’d smiled at finally having an excuse to build the additional bedroom extension he’d had planned years ago for his grandson.
Before the Keth took his family.Â
Now that project had a reason to live again.Â
Excitement and impatience bubbled within him to complete his morning duties with the livestock. Once finished, he gladly dug out the extension plans from the basement storage.Â
He held the old, deactivated datapad in his hand. His fingers drew lines of memory through the fine layer of dust that accumulated on the smooth surface. It had remained in that drawer for twenty years.Â
Yet in all that time, he could never bring himself to throw it away.Â
He was glad he didn’t. Â
Orin activated the datapad, igniting the light of a former life, and began to work.
