New Text Message: I’ll be out late. Don’t wait up love. xx
She’d externally rolled her eyes, but internally her heart fell into the pit of her stomach. She plugged her phone into the charger for overnight, and began her nighttime routine.
He’d forgotten.
It wasn’t the first time he’d forgotten about “Saturday Night Double Feature” (and it probably wouldn’t be the last) They’d begun them three years prior after sharing a sleep inducing (yet required) Philosophy class. She’d been doodling quotes from a film close to her. As the professor drawled on how Aristotle’s beliefs and thought process was still relevant in the social media era; he watched as she intricately doodled “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.” in the upper left hand corner of her notes. He smiled to himself, understanding all too well the intense feelings of boredom brought on by a required class. The professor finally finished the lecture as students scrambled for their personal items. As fate would have it, she tripped over her own foot; sending her folder full of notes across the tile floor. Her face flushed a bright red, bewilderment showcasing proudly on her cheeks. Forgoing his own belongings (and another class that started in only twenty minutes halfway across campus) he picked up a couple papers from the strewn pile on the floor.
“Miss O’hara… I do believe you’ve misplaced these.” He joked, reaching the papers to her.
She smiled back shyly, redness filling her entire face.
“Thanks… John… is it?” She questioned, her eyes level with his own.
“Yes… I sit…”
“Three chairs down from me.” She shrugged, shoving the papers into her almost full backpack and swinging it over her shoulder.
“Have you ever read it?” He called after her retreating frame.
“Why would I quote it if I’d never read or seen it?” She questioned, eyebrows arched.
“I just… not many people know that one.” He confessed.
“Well they should.” She bartered back.
That first conversation lead to a beautiful friendship, a renewed promise of movie night every Friday (even though neither of them had an intense desire to do anything else) and a shared flat. But recently, John had been shying away from the old-souled woman. He’d forgotten twice in the past two months. Enough for her to question if she was becoming a boring friend. If she wasn’t enough for the shy bassist anymore.
Tossing over in her sleep once more; she heard the key turn in the apartment door. John slammed it shut (signaling that he was probably inebriated) She gathered a pair of pajama shorts from her closet and let her hair cascade from the bun she’d maneuvered hours prior. Curls spilled against her back as she walked into the florescent lighted kitchen; finding John sitting against the oven.
“Hey buddy…” She smiled softly at her best friend.
John didn’t look great; in fact he looked like he’d been through hell. He waved shyly at his flatmate; embarrassed that she had to see him so out of sorts. An ice pack was resting on his left eye. Her stomach fell. He’d gotten into a fight.
“I’m guessing one too many beers, huh?” She questioned, trying to alleviate the somber mood in the room.
“And that asshole of an ex boyfriend of yours…”
“What… was Jacob at the bar?”
“He was… he kept… he kept… you know what? It’s not important. You go back to sleep, love.” He smiled softly.
“No… I’m up now. And you forgot about Friday. So you owe me.”
The realization sunk into his perfectly angular face. Sadness seeped through his eyes and he gave a pleading look to the girl.
“Fine fine fine…” He started. He couldn’t say no to her.
“Jacob… Jacob kept asking about you… calling you names. And I was sick of it. And so I threatened him. And he kept going. And I just got so angry that I… and now I have a black eye and a really bad headache.” He vented.
“You don’t have to stick up for me. Especially with arseholes like that. But… thanks John. Lets get you to bed, eh?” She questioned, helping him to his feet.
“Thanks love.” He thanked her as she guided him to his room.
She covered her eyes as he quickly changed into sweatpants. She opened them once more; revealing a very shirtless best friend. Her stomach dropped into her feet as she approached her friend.
“Since when have you slept shirtless?” She questioned, cradling his neck as he curled up into the double bed.
“Since the third grade.” He laughed back. She tucked his shoulders into the quilts and ran a hand through his soft, curly hair.
“Goodnight John… maybe we can reschedule Friday night for tomorrow?” She whispered.
As she turned to leave the room; she heard him murmur.
“Stay.” He blurted quickly, jolting himself awake.
Confusion struck her being as she begged him to speak again… hoping to The Gods that he wasn’t sleep talking.
“What?”
“Stay… please…”
“John… is that a good idea?” She question, bundles of nerves attacking her stomach.
“Please… just for tonight… and I won’t bug you again.” He pleaded.
“But John… the thing is… if I start… I won’t want to leave.” She swallowed.
“Fine… stay then. And don’t leave.” He responded, almost croaking on his own words.
“Okay… I’ll stay.” She whispered, stepping towards the bed quietly.
And there goes the friendship. He shimmied out of the covers for a moment; concerning himself with her comfort.
“Is… is it okay if…” He started.
“Yes love… you can hold me.” She giggled against the pillow. And with that, he pulled her into his chest. Strong arms folding against her body; shivers enveloping her entirety.
As her heart fell into a soft, sleeping rate; she heard one last whisper from her best friend.
“I love you.” He whispered against her hair. She smiled softly as sleep washed over her.
“Ditto.” She whispered back, eyes fluttering shut.
Hi friends!!! Hope you enjoyed and I’ll see you all soon! Comments, constructive criticism and words of encouragement are always greatly appreciate!
