Save this program…. TAKE ACTION! On behalf of the nearly two million members of The American Legion, I urge you to save the Troops to Teachers program by expressing support for the adoption of Senate Section 576 into the FY 2022 NDAA. Senate Section 573 in the FY 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) would reauthorize the Troops-To-Teachers program and produce an assessment illustrating the cost and benefits of the program to members of the armed forces, veterans, and local educational agencies. The Troops to Teachers has placed over 21,000 transitioning servicemembers into classrooms since the program's launch in 1994. It is a time-tested transition program for servicemembers who are looking to make a difference in communities that need them. With COVID-19 exacerbating the problem of teacher shortages across the country, we need to be looking to expand programs like Troops to Teachers- not eliminate them. Despite this, DOD has quietly shuttered the program this year without Congressional consent. Senate Section 573 in the FY 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) would reauthorize the Troops To Teachers program and produce an assessment illustrating the cost and benefits of the program to members of the armed forces, veterans, and local educational agencies. The American Legion proudly supports this, and I along with the nearly 2 million members of The American Legion call on you to champion this transition program and ensure that Section 573 is included in the final NDAA to ensure that our servicemembers still have pathways to become teachers. #writeyourcongressman #teachersmatter https://www.instagram.com/p/CVzGraINv6g/?utm_medium=tumblr
